After meeting your guide in central Lisbon or from your hotel (if pickup is selected), journey north in a cozy minivan to Almourol Castle one of Portugal’s most historical sites. Along the drive learn about the Knights Templar who used this castle to secure the boundary created by the Tagus River. Arrive at the river near the castle and enjoy a boat cruise to its gates. Then, wander through this medieval fortification and steep in its history.
Next, head to the charming city of Tomar, home to some of Portugal’s most impressive monuments and buildings. Gain insight from your guide about how the Knights Templar used a religious code to form the city, like the four monuments stationed around the city to resemble a crucifix. In Tomar, see famed monuments such as the 12th-century Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit the Castle of Tomar. Then, take a break for lunch at a local restaurant (own expense). Afterward, venture to the Gothic-style Church of Santa Maria do Olivais, a gorgeous 12th-century church erected for the Knights Templar.

Visiting the Templar Castle was an eye-opening experience. It is very well worth your time. To think that the castle that we visit was one of important places that helped the Christians defeat the Moors. WOW!

This tour was absolutely outstanding! We explored so much, and our guide, Rodrigo C., made the entire experience unforgettable. His knowledge of the Knights Templar was fascinating and he brought history to life in a way that truly felt like interacting with the past.
The boat ride to Castelo de Almourol was amazing, and throughout the day Rodrigo was incredibly observant, patient, and considerate. He and his colleagues made sure everyone in the group was comfortable and taken care of. Excellent driver as well. More guides should be like him!
The pacing of the tour was perfect, giving us plenty of time to savor each moment. Despite the changing weather, we adapted easily and never missed a thing. We saw so much. An extensive, immersive experience from start to finish.

Paolo was a very pleasant and accommodating guide with obvious experience and knowledge about the Templars. We visited all of the sites in a relaxed and timely manner. The van though needs maintenance since the door gets stuck in a closed position.

This was a very long day and due to some issues our small group tour became tripled in size and so one star off for that. Otherwise the Templar history was fantastic, the monuments all I’d hoped for and the guide was very well informed. I’d recommend this tour. Just be prepared for a long day.

We had a very satisfying trip with our driver/guide Hugo. He was very well informed and professional. He even added a drive out to the Aquaduct dos Pegoes per our request. We appreciated being able to choose our own lunch spot and free time to buy souvenirs. Hugo gave us a lot of Templar history and answered all our questions.

The places we visited were excellent. The tour guide was very knowledgeable however we did have issues. The meeting time was 7:50 with an 8am departure. He didn’t show up until almost 8:20. He apologized and said he would make up the time on tour. So no problem we thought. The biggest issue was coming back there was a lot of traffic and said he wasn’t going to drop us off at meeting point but told us it would be very close. So again we went with the flow. The issue was it wasn’t close. It wound up being almost a 40 min walk back. Basically approx 2 miles. Us along with another couple in the group couldn’t believe it was this far. Overall good tour and during the day the guide was very good. Just being dumped off at the end was unacceptable especially for the cost of the tour

Great tour with Ines to Tomar and the Convent of Christ. Had a good lunch at a cafe in Tomar.The Convent was stunning and we learnt a great deal of history and the Templars. Tour was well paced and recommend this as a day tour from Lisbon with Cooltours.

A beautiful day away from the big city. The drive through the countryside showed the old and the new - olive trees and solar farms. The aloumar castle at the boundary between the moorish south and the Christian north on a beautiful river was a highlight of the trip with only a few tourists in the morning. The 12th century church/ monastery in Tomar was very impressive in the detailed decorative stonework and frescoes. Worth the long drive. Lunch in a candle-lit medieval tavern was on keeping with the spirit of the trip.

If you are into the Knight Templar or want to know more about it this tour is great. We went to a castle and a convent connected to the templars and a small church.. my husband and son really enjoyed hearing all the info our guide told us.
If you really just want to see a cool castle and beautiful church, you can stay right in Lisbon and see the Castle there and the monastery.

Ines was an incredible tour guid! She took us through the Knights Templar history on one breath ! So knowledgeable and detailed. We’ve seen a charming Tomar and had a wonderful lunch. Also she is an excellent driver, which is very important !

What a wonderful tour for those interested in the history of the Knights Templar, castles and churches. Our guide Ines was excellent - she combined knowledge, passion and spirit that made the 8 hours seem like no time at all, she was the best you could ask for!. One cool recommendation- have lunch at Taverna Antiqua in Tomar to experience a medieval meal.

Such a good tour and our tour guide, Leo, made it fun and interesting. Leo was a wealth of information about the construction of the castle and convent and history of the Knights Templar. The convent is beautiful and I also enjoyed having time to walk around the town of Tomar.

If you are interested in the Knights Templer history, then this tour is for you. We thoroughly enjoyed the whole day we spent with our wonderful guide, Rui. He made sure we had the best experience in seeing the Castle, Covent and Church. Rui even treated us to a special pastry. It's easy to say this was our favorite day in Portugal. A step back in history to the times of the Templars was a fascinating tour, especially when you have a history teacher to bring it alive. Arriving at Costello de Almourol was magical…there in the Tagus River was a real ‘postcard’ castle fortress, which could have been a Disney production, except it was built more than 900 yrs ago! Getting to it by boat and climbing the steps to the top really stimulated the imagination! Then it was on to the monumental Convento de Cristo, architecturally magnificent, and full of the intrigues of Portuguese Royal family history. The finish in the Church of Santa Maria do Olival, the HQ of the Templar knights, was a finale Alfred Hitchcock could have written! Leo left us itching to start digging for Templar treasure!
