Itinerary

Meet a driver at your hotel or port for a morning departure—the exact meeting time can be tailored to your schedule and preferences. Board an air-conditioned minivan for the trip to the first stop of the day, Rossio Square, once used by the Inquisition for public executions and autos-da-fé. Visit the Jewish Memorial in Rossio Square, which remembers the 1506 massacre of Portuguese people accused of practicing the Jewish faith.

Continue to the Lisbon Synagogue in the parish of Santo Antonio, and see 19th century architecture that blends Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Byzantine styles, with the opportunity to meet some members of the local Jewish community (this visit is dependent on availability).

From the synagogue, travel to the Lisbon Jewish Cemetery, which is still used by the local Jewish community. Walk among the horizontal, Sephardic-style tombstones, with dates that stretch back into the 19th century. In the Alfama district, you’ll be walking streets that were once part of the Jewish quarter, the Judiaría, as you hear the stories of the Jewish people who arrived in Lisbon after being displaced from Spain in the 15th century.

After your time in Alfama, this 7-hour tour concludes with drop-off at the original departure point.

We had an excellent day...

Meryl_W, Oct 2025
We had an excellent day with our guide Nuno. He was pleasant and informative. My only negative comment, no reflection on our guide, Is that viator should have told us before booking that the Temple and Jewish cemetery are closed on Sunday. I expected that they'd be open since it was not the Sabbath but evidently that is not the cases in Portugal since the war began.)

Great tour!

Karen_H, Jul 2024
Walking in the old Jewish neighborhood was a highlight. Also, our guide was very knowledgeable about intertwining Jewish and Portuguese history. We were also grateful for his directing us to a fabulous lunch venue and showing us additional worthwhile sites.

A stimulating journey

Professorkahn, May 2022
Emotional to hear the history and hard to fathom what our ancestors went through. Loved walking through their neighborhood. Seeing one of the two synagogues functioning today was rewarding and good to know that Judiasm is still alive in Lisboa.

Very knowledgeable tour guide

David_R, Sep 2019
The guide was very knowledgable and able to provide the history of Jewish life in Lisbon. Unfortunately being Shabbat, we were unable to visit the synagogue.

Our guide John was fabulous with...

Claire S, Aug 2017
Our guide John was fabulous with immense knowledge and very caring and courteous we cannot fault him. However I was very disappointed with the trip as the visit to the synagogue was very very short. The guide had arranged a time at 1130 for us to visit and after waiting for him for 20 minutes he informed our guide he could not see us until 1pm. The guide in the synagogue Alan was quite rude couldn't be bothered and was only interested in extracting as much money in souvenirs for the synagogue. The whole visit lasted 10 minutes and he could not wait to see us go. We had to ask him the questions. We were never offered a visit to the Jewish cemetery and certainly did not see the Jewish heritage engravings on the walls of the ghetto. It was meant to be a 7 hour tour and we were delivered back to our cruise ship one and three quarter hours early. When I asked why we were not having the full 7 hours we were told because the traffic was not heavy. We paid the exorbitant rate 257 for a four and a quarter hour tour. This was very unsatisfactory. Yes we did see insides of 2 beautiful churches but that was not what we paid for we asked for a Jewish Heritage Tour and that is not what we got. This was our first visit to Lisbon and we were bitterly disappointed. We would not recommend this tour to our friends,
