Loved this excursion! Rui was a fabulous guide. We spent the perfect amount of time in both cities. We had a lovely lunch in Monseraz and free time to explore the charming walled city and then enjoyed the multiple features of Evora including the ruins and the various churches (with a stop for yummy gelato along the way). Definitely 5 stars - highly recommend both the tour and Rui!

Joao our guide was wonderful and made our trip a really excellent experience. He was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sharing with us. We were traveling with two very small kids and everything went smoothly. Our older two kids had a great time and learned a lot. Would highly recommend!

Momsaraz is worth the two hours to get there.

Giselle_I, Mar 2026
Momsaraz is worth the two hours to get there. Our driver, Rui, picked up at our Airbnb which was great. He gave us a lot of interesting historical information which we like. We saw beautiful vineyards, olive groves, almond orchards and cork forests. We felt we had the place to ourselves. No one was there. The sun was shining. We climbed the castle walls and saw an amazing view. We had a fantastic lunch at Taverna Os Templarios. The view and the food were amazing! Then we drove to Évora which is a world heritage site. It is beautiful. However, it was raining and cold and some in our group were tired so we didn’t get to enjoy much. Probably if the weather had been nice it would have been a different story. Rui dropped us off at our Airbnb which was great!

Evora was nice, but...

Melanie_B, Mar 2026
Evora was nice, but Monsaraz has breathtaking views. It is a far way from Lisbon, just to keep in mind, views amazing just being so far and enjoying other small cities more that Evora is why the 4 stars. The tour was seamless, picked up and dropped off at our hotel was great. Drive kind and friendly.

Day trip to Evora and Monsaraz

Abel_R, Feb 2026
João was our tour guide and he absolutely killed it. Got picked up on time and as we drove out of the city toward Évora and Monsaraz, he told us about the history, agriculture, and significance of each place we stopped. He thought up more about cork, almonds, and castles, as well as traditions of old, showed us important significant landmarks, and gave us time to reflect. Also, thanks for providing us with great weather. Couldn’t ask for a better guide.

Great day in Evora and Monsaraz

We had a fabulous day with Rui at the medieval hilltop town of Monsaraz with its cobblestone roads, ancient fortification walls, watchtower and beautifully restored church. Rui explained everything to us - even the Portuguese bullfighting technique that takes place in the castle bullring once a year. There are great views across the lake to the Spanish border. Then on to Evora (Rui is an excellent driver) to explore the ancient Roman temple, nearby massive Gothic cathedral and the interesting but creepy Chapel of Bones. Rui selected a fabulous restaurant for us where we enjoyed a tasty lunch of traditional oxtail stew with local wines and finished with a decadent chocolate cake. All in all, we highly recommend this full day tour and if you’re lucky enough, you’ll get Rui as your guide - he’s informative, patient, friendly and very considerate.

Unforgettable Day Trip to Monsaraz and Évora with the Best Guide, Rui!

Brad, Nov 2025
We had an incredible day with our guide, Rui. He arrived right on time—actually a few minutes early—and from the start, he was professional, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. It was just me and my wife in a very comfortable van, and Rui’s driving and conversation made the trip smooth and enjoyable. Our first stop was the medieval hilltop village of Monsaraz, and it was absolutely breathtaking. The village sits high above the Alentejo plains, with 360-degree views that stretch all the way into Spain. The cobblestone streets, whitewashed homes, and quiet atmosphere made it feel like we’d stepped back in time. We were lucky to visit when it wasn’t crowded—just a local school group exploring the village. Inside the fortress, we could see where they hold the running of the bulls and the bullfights at the end of the festival. Standing on the castle walls, looking out over vineyards, olive groves, and cork trees, was the highlight of the day. After Monsaraz, Rui took us to Évora for lunch. He recommended a local restaurant that turned out to be fantastic. We tried the oxtail and the famous black pork cheeks. Rui explained how the black Iberian pigs eat acorns from cork trees, which gives the meat its rich, nutty flavor. It was one of the best meals we’ve had in Portugal. In Évora, we explored the Roman Temple, which is nearly 2,000 years old, and the Cathedral, where you can climb to the rooftop for incredible views of the city. We also visited the Chapel of Bones, which was fascinating, eerie, and deeply moving. Rui shared the stories and history behind each site, and his knowledge made the experience come alive. It is a long drive—about an hour and a half each way—but it’s a beautiful one, passing through vineyards, olive trees, almond trees, and cork oak forests. Getting out of Lisbon and seeing the Alentejo countryside was well worth the time. Overall, this was one of the best days of our entire trip. The private tour was comfortable, informative, and perfectly paced. Rui was an amazing guide, and we can’t recommend him highly enough. If you’re considering a day trip from Lisbon, this one should be at the top of your list.

Rui is an Exceptional Guide

Gretchen_G, Oct 2025
Rui was an exceptional guide with a wealth of knowledge in history, food and culture. He answered our many questions, accommodated our stop for ceramic shopping and his attention to detail was fantastic (even having the ac prepared for us in the car during a hot day). This tour with Rui was the highlight of our trip to Portugal.

Evora and Monsaraz from Lisbon with Gui

Cameron_W, Aug 2025
This was an outstanding tour that we would highly recommend. Gui was extremely knowledgeable with a contagious passion for Portuguese history. Not only did he come with a wealth of background and stories, he was open to answering any questions we had.

Charming countryside side day trip

Angela_M, Aug 2025
Wonderful experience with Joao touring Monsaraz and Evora. We enjoyed the drive through the countryside and learning about the history of the region and the agriculture (cork, olives, almonds, wheat). Monsaraz is a charming little walled village overlooking the lake with shops selling local products. Joao recommended a fabulous restaurant in Evora and guided us through the town pointing out details that we would have otherwise missed. It is worthwhile to climb the steps to the roof of the cathedral and to visit all levels of the chapel of bones museum to view the nativity sets and artwork.

Great Tour/knowledgeable Guide

Theresa_G, May 2025
GUI was a very knowledgeable in the history of the sites we saw, went out of his way to show us cork and almond trees. I would highly recommend him if you want to take this tour.

Very enjoyable non rushed tour of Évora and Monsaraz. Saw the church of bones. was expecting a terror show but it turned out to be quite a contemplating moment and not a horror after all. Saw the Temple of Dianna. Saw the site of Monsaraz. Our guide and driver Gui was knowledgeable and personable.

This tour goes to some of the most beautiful places in Portugal. We saw and learned about historical places that were very interesting. However, the views from these sites was drop dead gorgeous. We loved our tour guides Alejandro and Miguel. They were fun to tour with.

Guy was an excellent guide! Extremely knowledgeable! Very Resourceful! And enjoyably personable! We had a fantastic day with him touring Evora and Monsaraz. Lots of interesting historical facts connecting to what you are seeing. Arranged a spectacular lunch for us to suit our dietary needs. Relaxed pace , giving more than enough time for our personal interest.

Awesome Tour and Great Guide

Hector_C, Jul 2024
The Tour we did of Évora and Monsaraz from Lisbon, which in my opinion is highly recommendable, was quite exciting in terms of history and very beautiful sightseeing as well. Both villages deserve to be seen, on the other hand, we were very fortunate to get the tour from such a diligent and knowledgeable guide. Joao was very dedicated to providing us with a tour to remember. His English was perfect and his best quality, as a Tour guide, was the fact that he was extremely communicative, therefore, providing you with a lot of information by using also his excellent storyteller capabilities. We were delighted because of his extensive knowledge about the history of these places but mainly, very surprised about how much he knew regarding agronomy. It was a real pleasure to meet Joao and enjoy his friendly company. The trip from Lisbon to the village takes about 1 1/2 hour which was done in a comfortable SUV. Certainly, very old and well maintained beautiful Villages and a guide like behave as your best friend.

João gave us a wonderful understanding of the history of Evora and Monsaraz. He took us to a beautiful restaurant for lunch cafe Alentejo and we highly recommend the food. João explained the importance of cork to the region and showed as almond and cork tree. We had a fantastic time and we highly recommend this tour.

Un tiempo en familia excelente, con Joao que nos dio una buena explicación de los lugares recorridos y hasta costumbres estudiantiles del lugar. Al estar con niños pensamos que sería difícil pero fue muy ameno. La vista espectacular y los sitios visitados.
