    What To Expect

When the first Spanish fleets began to travel across the Florida Straits back in the 16th century, ships wrecked along the dangerous reefs of Key West and the Florida Keys. Salvaging the wreckage of those ships and their cargos, as well as the rescue of their crews and passengers — was the foundation of Key West’s economy throughout the 1800s. By the mid-1850s, Key West had become the richest city in the entire United States, all due to the lucrative wrecking industry.

The Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum celebrates the history of the Key West wreckers with two floors of artifacts from shipwrecks that includes treasures from the Spanish fleets of the 1600 and 1700s, as well as a large collection of pieces from the 1856 wreckage of the Isaac Allerton, one of the richest shipwrecks in Key West history. Explore them all and try to lift the silver bar from the wreck of a Spanish treasure ship in 1656.

There are also a variety of audio/visual presentations, including a below-sea-level theater that provides a look into Key West’s past to see what life was like for those people who risked their lives to recover the remains of shipwrecks. In fact, much of the salvaging was done without the use of any diving equipment. Ask any of the storytellers who wander the museum in period costumes.

Finally, visit the 65-foot lookout tower for an amazing view of the island city of Key West.

If interested in shipwrecks in Key West, its affordable and worth a visit

    Thomas_B, Jan 2026
An interesting museum about the maritime past of Key West through many shipwrecks. Interesting material culture, which you experience on a self-guided tour of the three story museum. Surprisingly, there is no gift shop or docents to answer questions. It is affordable, and is still worth an hour or so.

    The Tower

    Jesse_U, Nov 2025
The tower was pretty awesome and the museum was a unique experience. We enjoyed the professionals insight on the recovered treasures.

    Pirate ship review

    michael_c, Nov 2025
The ship was a bit dark when entering to see the movie and steps were a bit steep for seniors or others with handicap issues.

    It was Ok

For $19 it was lame. I was expecting a bigger experience but it’s a 10 min museum but at the end you have the stairs you can climb 6 stories up for the best key west view.

    Better

So cool the travel agent said this one’s better than Mel’s as Mel’s is just tryin to get you to buy expensive stuff

    Treasures and Tower

    Candace_T, May 2024
Be ready for stairs up and down and lots of great shipwreck treasures to see. Enjoyed lifting the silver bar. So many pirates and wreckers to hear about. Tower offers great views of the area with if you’re bold enough to climb all the stairs to get up there.

    Very interesting tour

It was very interesting learning about how they recovered things from all the shipwrecks. I would recommend going to it.

    Sorry I went.

It smelled bad. No elevators for handicapped. And the voucher for $59.99 didn't work. I had to pay 2 times. I need to get a refund. The download did not open up to the q code.

    Very informative

Interesting history for Key West community. Wreckers shared amongst residents and all profited from each wreck they salvaged.
