Excellent adventure to the plantation. Major Ted was a great guide. The grounds are beautiful and the experience was memorable

Magnolia Plantation - The good and the bad

    Kenda_K, Jun 2026
Visited in June. Weather was very warm, the bugs were out (bring bug spray). The tour itself was really great. The grounds were beautiful. We opted for the Boat tour as late as the morning of the tour. When we got on the boat is when our driver was informed that the boat tour was no longer available due to the swamp being drained for maintenance. The optional train (pulled by a "tractor") was scheduled but then a T-storm came through. Otherwise, the tour of the camp was very moving. The irish gentleman did a fabulous job keeping true to history without bias and painted a picture of the lives of the slaves. The house tour was very well done as well. She shared history and personal details of the Drayton family that made the tour fun and interesting. Overall, I would recommend!

Great tour, Magnolia had a lot to do and see, our driver Dan was very informative and added a sense of humor to the day.

    Magnolia House

    John_H, Jun 2026
The grounds are beautiful. Staff is very friendly and very helpful. The house tour has too many people. Everyone does not fit in the room and the guide started speaking. As soon as he entered the room.

Comprehensive, cost-effective tour of Magnolia plantation!

    Charles_S, Jun 2026
This tour gave us great history and insight into the Magnolia plantation as we enjoyed a guided tour of the plantation house, a very passionate history of slavery, and a guided motorized tram – train tour around the property to enjoy the nature on this estate. It was a very comprehensive tour that was well worth the cost. “Lieutenant” Dan was the driver- guide from Charleston to the Magnolia plantation, and he gave us some history and insight into the plantation days of Charleston. My wife and I would strongly recommend this tour for anyone seeking the history and sites of the plantation days of long ago Charleston.

    Rich in History

    Taryn_T, Jun 2026
This was an absolutely amazing experience. We had basically 3 tours built into our tour. I think the order varies day to day. On our tour the first tour was the Slavery to Freedom tour. Then we did a tour of the Magnolia Mansion. Our last tour was a train ride around the entire plantation. Unfortunately the boat tour was unavailable. Definitely something I would recommend if you visit Charleston. Lots of history here.

The plantation was beautiful! The tour guides were very knowledgeable about the plantation. The slavery to freedom tour was so educational and I felt I really took away feeling that I need and want to learn more. The train ride was ok. It showed how beautiful the grounds are but the train itself was so jerky and loud we couldn’t hear the guide at all. So I felt like we missed a lot of information throughout that tour. But the train itself can make you a little nauseous with all the start and stop jerking.

Overall a great visit, the plantation and is beautiful. The slavery tour was poignant, the guide did a masterful job describing the pain and suffering of slaves!

    Stupendous tour!

    Lynda_M, Jun 2026
Our driver Lt. Dan was so amazing and helpful. He also answered any other questions we had, but the plantation tour itself was very interesting and fun.

    Magnola Plantation visit

    Lois_S, May 2026
The shuttle service from downtown Charleston was a huge bonus and our driver, Brian was great. The grounds of the plantation were beautiful, the talk about the slaves that worked there was informative. The choice of a boat tour or train tour was a nice addition.

Magnolia Plantation Not What I Expected

    DrPaul_C, May 2026
It is about a 30 minute drive from Charleston. The plantation is in the woods and is a very understated experience. The public facilities while clean could use serious updating. Some of the walkways are gravel, which leads to dusty conditions. interesting history in the guides were informative. The nature train was interesting however, just a little more time to observe some of the wildlife would’ve been helpful. The option to do the swamp portion was non-operational on the day we attended. The the gardens are considered natural and not formal in other words a lot of the vegetations overgrown, and prevented one to appreciate the design. Overall, it was informational, but disappointing.

    Nice day

Comfortable ride to and from the plantation with a driver that gave us a thorough overview of the area and the plantation. The plantation was organized and there were three different experiences included - plantation home tour, nature train ride, and slave to freedom presentation.

Had a wonderful time except the dozens of mosquito bites I came home with. Will be back to see more.

Informative, but Could Be More Accessible

    annieritapark, May 2026
Overall, the tour was interesting and extremely informative and comprehensive. Prepare to see lots of sights and learn all kinds of history in the process,, all shown in an immersive manner, particularly on the slave tour! This facility, however, could do to improve their ADA compliance, such as widen sidewalks and ramps for wheelchair access and allow exceptions for blind/visually-impaired people to be able to touch items.

    Great tour guides for all...

    Lisa_C, May 2026
Great tour guides for all three tours included. Beautiful plantation, nice restaurant onsite, very clean and well kept.

    Magnolia Plantation

    Diane_S, May 2026
Magnolia plantation was beautiful. Good history lesson on slaves, civil war and what happened to plantation owners after the war. One of the slave cabins had old newspapers on the walls for insulation. The grounds were beautiful. Not enough time to see all the grounds but they now allow you to come back within a week to see more at no cost.

The plantation house tour and train tour was really good. The guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. The slave cabin tour never happened because the tour guide never showed.

    Beautiful plantation!...

    Anna_H, Apr 2026
Beautiful plantation! Enjoyed walking through it's gardens, tram tour and house tour. The tour on slave's quarters was a bit too long though.

    Making history REAL!

    randi_c, Apr 2026
The tour guides were all very knowledgeable, it was well organized and allowed us to touch history!!

    Informative and Beautiful

    Paula_S, Apr 2026
I had a wonderful experience on the tours at Magnolia Plantation. All guides were well informed and interesting to listen to. The grounds were beautiful and what was blooming was bright. The house is stunning BUT the nature boat trip was best. To see nature in its own element is always amazing.

A lot of walking on paved or gravel. Nice gift shop, cafe and bathrooms. House tour was great! Beautiful grounds.

Wonderful half day trip - starts early before the crowds!

    Leah_C, Apr 2026
Wear comfy walking shoes, bring bug spray, and definitely use sun protection! We brought a couple of bottles of water and light snacks. They have the Peacock Cafe, as well. I got an iced coffee with vanilla for ~$6 - they do have spirits and food options, too! Our tour bus driver, Karlie Jo, was amazing! She’s a great driver, funny, and you should take her advice on the nature train ride versus the boat ride. There are several tours available, but I honestly liked walking around and exploring the area most of all. There are ADA accessible bathrooms, and the whole plantation is very family / young kid friendly. I would recommend coming here with this tour option 100% - you meet at the clean and accessible Charleston Visitor Center for pick up and drop off, and it’s so centrally located you can bounce off to anything the area has to offer right away.

    LouisB, Apr 2026
The day was pleasant and it was helpful to have transportation to and from the plantation. There was a slight mixup during our tour of the house and that portion of the tour was double booked with about 48 people. The guide Marie handled the situation well and took the entire group on the tour but it did make it a little difficult with that large of a group. Also, there was very little time between tours to eat and a large line at the concession stand. So I would plan on eating before or after the tour.

Loved the Slave History tour, the house tour was good but way over crowded. We thoroughly enjoyed the boat ride and grounds were amazing.

    Jam-packed tour!!!

    Pat_I, Mar 2026
This included 3 different tours in the plantation and all the tour guides were wonderful. Are only Complaint is that we didn’t really have enough time in between the tours or after the tours to walk around and explore the grounds.
