Well this is a strenuous trail make no mistake lol. The up hill is intense for unfit humans, and what goes up must come down. Our guide Erin was absolutely wonderful and made the trip not so bad. She would take small breaks to let me catch my breath ( I am out of shape ). Erin was super informative in regard to the nature, and trail history. The float portion was very relaxing and definitely the reward for the hike. I do strongly recommend this tour and this company; I hope you get Erin. Just if you’re unfit like myself, I’d do some soul searching for sure🤣
Great hike-and-float excursion! The hike was a mildly technical challenge, so be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots. We were caught in the rain during both the hike and the float, so I also recommend bringing a lightweight rain poncho for the hike. For the float portion, boots and heavier ponchos are supplied by tour vendor.
Rachael, our excellent guide, did a great job keeping a comfortable pace for our group of 10. Our group included physically fit guests from their early to late 60s, as well as guests with heavier body types in their 40s and 50s, and she made sure everyone could enjoy the experience.
Be prepared for about 2 miles of elevation changes and uneven terrain, including rough, rustic steps going both up and down. Getting into the raft may also be challenging for anyone who has difficulty bending, balancing, or stepping down from an embankment.
If you are reasonably mobile and comfortable with uneven terrain, this is an outstanding excursion—an unforgettable way to hike through the rainforest and then relax while floating down the river.
This was a great tour. It starts with an active, leg-stretching hike through beautiful rain forest, followed by a fun and relaxing river raft float. Domenic was a great guide. He was very conscientious, making sure everyone was able to navigate the trickier parts of the trail. He was also very knowledgeable about edible plants. One of the better excursions of our Alaska trip.
It is a vigorous and rocky 2 mile hike so be sure you are comfortable with that level of challenge before signing up. Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The float portion was a nice break back down
Great day! Our guide Domenic ("Shaggy") was wonderful. The hike is challenging especially when it's wet (and that's most of the time since it's a rainforest), but I loved every minute of it. The float was scenic and relaxing. As an added bonus, Shaggy took us to a 100 foot waterfall on the way back to the cruise port.
Amazing hike and float experience! Our guide, Owen, was very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful throughout the entire tour. We really enjoyed both the hike and the float and would absolutely take this tour again if we visit Skagway in the future.
Another big plus is that this tour company is locally owned. By booking directly with them, you’re supporting the local Skagway community, which depends heavily on tourism. It made us feel even better knowing that our money was helping support local people and businesses.
Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Skagway!
A great tour with combination of hiking and floating. Learnt alot about the berries and wildlife in the area. Suggest checking people's walking ability - we had a very slow couple that couldn't keep up with the group so we all had to walk at their pace (far too slow for normal fitness level).
Our guide, Bob, was an extremely knowledgeable and experienced guide. He was able to answer any question that was asked of him. There were only 9 guests in the tour which certainly had a more intimate experience compared to larger tours. The hike was an interesting challenge but certainly doable for all ages with those that have has some hiking experience. The float was great but I did have a hole in my boot which left me with a cold and soaked foot for the ride. I was glad it was me and not someone else in my family. A longer float would have been nicer. Even given that, it was a great excursion and would recommend it to others as it was unique in some ways. It was also much cheaper than booking other excursions with the cruise line.
This was the highlight of our trip to Alaska! Rachel was incredibly knowledgeable about the local wildlife, fungi and trees. We felt absolutely immersed in the entire experience. The hike was strenuous but the float down the river was so worth it. Huge thank you to Rachel for showing us the time of our lives!!
Owen was an excellent guide and very informative!! He shared interesting information about the area, history, and the environment! The rafting float down a glacial river was great! I would highly recommend this tour!
We had an amazing time on this tour. The hike was great with information about the local wildlife. The guide was informed of and followed bear safety. The initial part of the hike is steep so likely not good for young children but fine for preteens or older kids who like to hike. The float was beautiful.
Incredible time. Our guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I do wish the raft portion was a little longer and more comfortable but that’s not a complaint on the guide whatsoever just should’ve been better prepared on my end. Bring good footwear and be willing to put in a little bit of work!
Great hike and beautiful river float with Danny! The trail was strenuous but fun. The boat ride was amazing!
Our guide was great. Very personable and friendly. Learned a lot about the area, people, and wildlife. Also blessed with great weather!
This tour Rocks! Our guide was so perfect for group .Calvin was laid back but professional. I highly recommend this trip for people that like to move and get out in nature
I have bad knees and I could handle the hike. Overall fantastic!
So much fun to get away from the busy streets of Skagway. This is was we came here for. Lots of breaks along the way. I wish I had read more about the gold rush before I got to Skagway. Because now I am on one the the trails used.
Hike wasn't hard, but Danny would warn you about a couple of hills and took his time for everyone.
Very peaceful and relaxing.
My family of four ( 13 y.o and 9 y.o) chose this excursion based on availability and viator reviews. We had a great time. Dominic, our guide picked us up promptly and ahead of time at our meeting point. You can request to be picked up in your own cruise terminal. You just need to call in advance to let them know.
The four hour length is conservative as we finished our excursion in 3.5 hours with a drop off back to our terminal. They made sure we would get back to our cruise for boarding on time.
Dominic immediately started his tour info the moment we sat in our van. He was very approachable, easy- going and had a few puns and jokes that made the kids enjoy the information. We were provided walking sticks and water and he made sure before we started our hike that we could handle the steep 1- mile incline. If not, other options were available. The trek up is not for the faint of heart. He educated us on foraging plants as food and as a medicinal option. The kids enjoyed trying some berries he offered. The hike is overall 2 miles before we reached the river. The weather was pleasant at mid 60s. They also provided waterboots for the water portion. Snack bars and water provided at the end of the excursion.
A professional run tour. Everyone was very friendly. Our guide chatted with the group and shared lots about Skagway. It was a great hike and I really enjoyed the raft trip down the river.
We had a fantastic hike and river float. Our guide was knowledgeable and fun. It is a decently physical activity but very fun.
We loved this Skagway adventure! We had a group of 11 people of varying ages/fitness levels and the hike was pleasant and relatively easy for everyone. The float down was relaxed and provided a highly unique view of the river, landscape and wildlife. Our guide was very knowledgeable and shared lots of history and interesting facts about the local flora & fauna. Highly recommend!! Pro-tip, when the guide offers bug repellant and a trekking pole, accept!
Great hike, and pretty float. Hike had one steep part, but not too bad if you are even moderately in shape. Guide was awesome.
This is a challenging but terrific hike. We enjoyed learning about the area from our competent guide.
The float down the river was relaxing at the end of the hike, and we felt secure and safe.
“Shaggy” and Zoe are great guide and we had a lot of fun! Highly recommend to anyone and it is a great combination with the train tour
The tour guide is amazing! Beautiful trail and great rafting experience! I pushed myself and did it. I would say this is beginner to intermediate hike. Wear comfortable waterproof hiking boots and waterproof jacket.
Great experience! Dom was an extremely knowledgeable guide. He was very patient and down to earth. The hike was absolutely beautiful and a great work out. We highly recommend this excursion.
If you want to get out of the shopping district in Skagway and into the Alaskan wilderness, this is a great excursion to book. The hike can be a bit taxing, but Danny and Zoe were considerate of everyone in our group. Zoe guided our raft down the river like a boss! Peaceful and relaxing… this is a great way to experience Alaska away from the port!
Beautiful hike with Rachel - very knowledgeable about the area and plants. Then an easy float in the Taiya River. Great trip, highly recommended.
Pick up and drop off was easy.
Great excursion for my family. Hike was beautiful and not too strenuous and the rafting down the river was so beautiful and my kids loved it! Tour guide, Rachel, was super friendly and informative!
Well organised, our guide was very knowledgable and made a smooth ride down the river.
The hike was exciting with steep climbs and different terrain. We loved it !
