Great tour of the Vatican, Basicilla, and St. Peter’s dome. Well worth making the climb to the top of the dome, the views are amazing. Then onto the Vatican museum and the Sistine Chapel. Be prepared it is a long tour but extremely interesting. Our guide was engaging and good fun. The tour could do with a coffee break before the afternoon tour starts.

What an incredible tour and overall experience! Massimo is a great guide, very knowledgeable and entertaining. The climb up the dome is something everyone should do at least once! I was able to make it even with a little claustrophobia. Having a guide who knows his art and history made the whole experience better. The masterpieces we experience were made even better with his background and storytelling ability.

Don’t miss this Vatican tour.

My wife and I visited Rome for the first time in February of 26, and we were very excited about visiting the Vatican. I spent a lot of time reviewing the various tours available, and chose this one. We were not disappointed. Our guide Marianna, was great. She was extremely knowledgeable and personable. You can tell that she is passionate about Vatican history, and knows her topic well. She made a good tour even greater. I highly recommend this tour. You won’t be disappointed.

Stunning views and beautiful artwork!

This tour was very thorough. The tour to get to the Sistine chapel LONG haha, a lot of information and a lot of history. The tour guide was very good - sometimes challenging to understand bc of the accent (but these individuals speak like 3 languages). But I would def recommend bc there is so much to see you def need someone to walk you through it!

Vatican Tour Success

Matthew_M, Jan 2026
Nadia was a super knowledgeable guide and explained so much detail during both the Vatican and Vatican Museums. The trip to the top of St. Peter’s is totally worth it, but it is a climb of over 600 steps. It is a solid workout. The Museums were very crowded and that made it difficult to lock in on any particular pieces, but the experience was worth the visit.

Great Tour

Jennifer_A, Dec 2025
Great tour, very informative and interesting. It was nice to move to the front of the line since we were in a group. Our guide Sabrina was wonderful!

Too much information to keep up with. Good.

Abhijit_S, Dec 2025
Good. First Hal if the tour was really good with information about Vatican. Second half was bit fast and lot of information shared in little time, that caused losing link with it. Tour guide was knowledgeable but with little ascent hard to follow. Also, she couldn’t keep group together while sharing information in the second half. She had a great attitude and pleasant personality.

Awesome Vatican combo tour. Highly recommend.

Adrian_K, Dec 2025
Great half day tour incl Vatican museum, Sistine Chapel, Papal grotto, St Peter’s Basilica ending with the Dome climb. Maria was a great guide: engaging and interesting to listen to, knowledgeable and caring of each person’s needs. She needs to be acknowledged as one of the stand out tour guides on our holiday (and we have had a few!). Just the right amount of time and detail for our family of 4’a intro to the Vatican. Highly recommend.

Great Tour with Maria!

Caroline_P, Nov 2025
Maria was phenomenal! She was knowledgeable about all the art and the history, she was engaging and fun to listen to. I could have listened to her talk about the basilica and museum all day. It was an early morning, but I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Amazing Chiara!

Chiara was amazing today. She had so much knowledge to share and Made the time fly! Would absolutely book another tour with her! Thank you so

Anna_C, Nov 2025
Sabrina was a fantastic tour guide- very easy to understand. She did a great job of finding places for us to pull over and enjoy each space without feeling rushed yet she kept the tour moving - hitting highlights without getting bogged down. Gave plenty of time for great photo ops and explained things well. Loved getting to see all parts of the basilica- tomb, main level and the dome climb was a highlight!! Earpiece at Vatican museums a little difficult for small kid ears. Earpieces for both places are only on one ear.

Lisa_T, Nov 2025
It is a long tour, with so much information - especially in the Vatican museums. But it is definitely worth it! The tour guide was very good - extremely knowledgeable. It is well worth doing a tour with a guide because there is so much to see and learn about. The Dome Climb is a hike, but the view from the top is worth it.

Avoid, ripoff merchants that don't fulfill itinerary

iain_a, Nov 2025
Whistle stop tour through the Vatican. Says you visit the catacombs in the itinerary but you don't. Trying to get a part refund and it's instantly rejected without a response as to why we've paid for something on the itinerary that hasn't been met. Seriously, go elsewhere. Get fast pass entry and pay for the dome access separately for 15 euro as these are ripoff merchants

Response from Host, Dec 2025

Dear Ian, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. As indicated in the tour description and throughout the booking process, during a Jubilee Year the Basilica may close certain areas with very little or no prior notice. Unfortunately, this is beyond our control. The Papal Tombs, which are located inside the Basilica, were unexpectedly closed on the day of your visit due to a private event. As you can imagine, the Basilica’s primary function is religious—prayer and pilgrims take priority—and only afterwards does it operate as a touristic site. The overall tour duration and the remaining inclusions were not affected, and we are glad to hear you enjoyed the rest of the experience. Although no additional payment was required on your side, and despite the closure being unrelated to our service, we made an exception and issued a refund for the portion you felt was missed. We understand the inconvenience this caused, but describing the service as a “rip-off” feels a bit harsh, especially considering that the rest of the tour proceeded exactly as planned. Guests choosing to visit during a Jubilee Year—which occurs only once every 25 years—should be aware that unexpected closures are always a possibility. Nonetheless, we truly hope that the remainder of your trip was enjoyable and that this experience did not overshadow your time in Rome.

The Amazing Vatican City

Robert_S, Nov 2025
The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. Enjoyed all her historical commentary on the museum and the cathedral. Worked her magic and we skipped the lines.

Long waits and Jubilee Year

Jeanne_W, Nov 2025
This tour was honestly just exhausting. Because it’s Jubilee year we spent over half of it standing in large crowds of people. I think this tour would be great if we were here during a non jubilee year. Our guide was knowledgeable and did the best she could given the large crowds we had no way of avoiding. However I think Viator should not be selling this as a small group “skip the line” tour during this Jubilee year especially. You will wait in a lot of lines and be with wall to wall people. Also would have been helpful to be told to bring water and potentially a snack. There were no opportunities to purchase anything at the Vatican until the end of the tour. Also the day before they changed the flow of our tour so we did the St Peter’s climb AFTER the entire Vatican and museum tour. You’re exhausted at this point and many of our tour mates opted out of doing the climb. We did it, but it would have been much better to have done this first thing vs 30 minutes before our tour was over. Overall this was our least favorite tour on the trip and is not worth it.

Not What We Signed Up For

Quentin_S, Nov 2025
Tour was 2.5 hours over the allotted time. It started in the Vatican Museum and then ended up at the dome climb. Not what the itinerary explained. If you want to climb 5000 stairs to the top of the dome after you have stood on your feet for 4 hours, more power to you. The guide spent too much time talking. It was an hour and a half before we saw our first exhibit. Glanced over the Basilica which was the most important part. All in all, it just was too much time wasted and too long. However, what we ended up seeing was incredible and worth all the torture we experienced. Bring a water bottle and take bathroom breaks where ever you can. If they had actually given us a break between tour segments as described in the itinerary, it could have been much better. Ended up taking up an entire day for us in Rome! Our tour guide was incredible, but didn’t keep us on schedule. Not sure if it was the tour company or her, but in the end, we were absolutely exhausted, but got to see everything we signed up for.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Dear Quentin, Thank you for your feedback. A guided tour does involve the guide explaining what you see, and we are a bit confused as your title suggests it wasn’t the tour you signed up for, yet you mentioned that you did see everything listed in the description. The tour duration and required fitness level are clearly stated, and bathroom breaks are included. We’re sorry you didn’t mention to your guide that you needed additional stops—they would have gladly accommodated you. It seems this tour may not have been the best match for your preferred pace, and we’d be happy to recommend a self-guided option next time. We hope the rest of your trip to Rome was wonderful.

What an amazing tour....

Patrick_G, Oct 2025
What an amazing tour. Being able to see all the history and incredible artifacts at the Vatican. The highlight was climbing to the top of Saint peters dome. The views are amazing.

Fantastic

Daniel_E, Oct 2025
Maria Elisa was great! She kept a good pace and was able to cover A LOT of information. The elevator for the first half of the dome climb was appreciated.

Great tour and great views

Casey_M, Oct 2025
Tour guide Chiara with Italia tours was the best! Was funny and explained everything very clearly and was incredibly informative. The views are awesome and the Vatican is so beautiful and historic. I would recommend this tour to anyone (who doesn’t have claustrophobia).

Very Long Day, but worth it for skip the line access

CatherineBoutin, Oct 2025
Terrible directions to meeting point. We had a really hard time finding it. Should be clear to stay on the left BEFORE you get to the line security line. Chiara our guide was great and funny.

Great small group tour with Nadya

Susan_G, Oct 2025
Small group - very thorough and detail history by Nadia our tour guide. Nadia was excellent and very informative. Highly recommend her for a small group/private tour Since crowds are large, security does not allow much time for groups to pause to take in the surroundings as there is a vast number of items to view. Everyone receives a radio unit , but The level of noise made it difficult to hear so I stayed close to Nadia for better acoustics. The experience was amazing and honestly there is so much to see.

Great tour to see Saint Peter Square, Saint Peter’s Basilica, the tower and Sistine Chapel

Bosco_D, Sep 2025
The tour guide was very pleasant and gave just the right amount of information. Logistically, she carried out the plan to perfection Right with the entrance at Saint Peter Square to the Basilica allowing us time to go to the tower and then from there onto the sistine Chapel the only thing that was missing was a little more information in both the Basilica and the Sistine Chapel while inside. But I guess that may be just enough for time. A tour worth the price!
