Overview

Discover the Vatican Museums on this special Sunday tour with a seasoned American guide. Whilst Sunday visits to the Vatican hold extra religious resonance, they draw in larger crowds that make it tricky to get to where you want to go. Navigate through the chaos with an expat guide, who moves you seamlessly from gallery to gallery, and listen to commentary from a native English-speaker that's engaging and easy to understand.
  • Join a guide who has been touring the Vatican for over 20 years
  • Stand beneath Michelangelo’s painted ceiling at the Sistine Chapel
  • Hear every word with handy radios for groups larger than 7
  • Visit the Vatican when it's at its most lively and vibrant

Vatican tour cancelled due to long line

    Kari_H, Jun 2026
Do not waste your time booking this tour. We stood in line for 2.5 hours and were not able to get inside the vatican museum as entry time lapsed. Wasted more than half a day with no vatican visit. I got my money back but not my vacation time. Why they would start a tour at 10 am and advise everyone to then buy water since we would be standing in line in sweltering heat? This tour should have started at 7 am.

    Response from Host, Jun 2026

On this particular Free Sunday, Rome was heavily impacted by the Giro d’Italia cycling race. A large part of the city’s police force was deployed for the event, which unfortunately meant much less crowd control around the Vatican entrance than usual. As a result, the queue became unusually disorganised, with people pushing in and less enforcement of the normal order, which significantly slowed entry and made the situation far more chaotic than a typical Free Sunday. We’re really sorry this is how your experience went. Standing in line for hours and still missing entry is incredibly frustrating, especially on a trip you’ve been looking forward to. Just to clarify how Free Sunday works: entry to the Vatican Museums is free for everyone, and there is no skip-the-line access for any tour or guide. All visitors must use the same public queue, and entry is strictly closed by the Vatican around 12:30 PM, regardless of how long people have been waiting. We also hear your point about timing. Normally we start at 10:00 AM, but after this experience we’ve already changed our Free Sunday departures to 9:00 AM so we can join the queue earlier, avoid peak congestion, and give ourselves the best possible chance of getting everyone inside. We appreciate your feedback and are genuinely sorry it didn’t work out on the day.

Do NOT book the last Sunday of the month. Entry is free for all visitors!!

DO NOT BOOK THIS TOUR THE LAST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH!! admission to the Vatican is free on these days. Our tour guide arrived late, encouraged everyone to get coffee and water and after standing in line for 2 1/2 hours we returned away at the door because they close the museums at 12:30. if we wouldn’t have Dilly dallied, we would’ve made it in. We were told to meet on the other side of town and had to walk past the entire line to enter instead of meeting in the Square, which also would’ve cut down on the logistics of making it to the city wall. We could literally see the door of the Vatican museum. We were told multiple times that we shouldn’t worry and she does this to her all the time. If I could give a zero star review, I would have. 2 1/2 hours of precious time on the trip of a lifetime that we won’t get back we’re standing in line. Super disappointing.

On this particular Free Sunday, Rome was also dealing with exceptionally high disruption due to the Giro d’Italia cycling race. A significant number of police resources were deployed across the city for the event, and this unfortunately affected crowd control around the Vatican entrance. As a result, the queue became unusually disorganised, with some people pushing in ahead of others and less enforcement of the normal order. This combination of factors led to much slower progress than is typically experienced on Free Sundays. We understand how frustrating it is to wait for an extended period and still miss entry, especially on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. On Free Sunday, entry to the Vatican Museums is free for all visitors and there is no skip-the-line access for any group or individual. All visitors must use the regular public queue, and entry is strictly subject to the Vatican’s closing time (typically 12:30 PM), after which admissions stop regardless of waiting time. Following this experience, we have adjusted our Free Sunday schedule to an earlier 9:00 AM meeting time to maximize the chances of entering before closing and to reduce the risk of being affected by peak congestion. We appreciate your feedback and will continue working to improve the experience under these unique circumstances.

    Response from Host, Jul 2025

Appreciate it, thanks for the lovely review. FREE SUNDAY is utter chaos but I do my best to make it enjoyable 🫡

There is a lot of walking...

    Andrew_B, May 2025
There is a lot of walking and very large crowds to contend with. Mike was very informative and did his best to keep line breakers in check.

    Lucky to See Sistine Chapel

    Sylvia_N, May 2025
Expect lots of people on the last Sunday of the month because The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel are free. No Skip the Line tours. Mike our Tour Guide was Awesome. He was informative and allowed us time to explore. He gave a detailed overview of what to see and what to expect once inside the Sistine Chapel. We were the last group of people to see the Sistine Chapel. It was going to be closed on the next day to begin preparing for Conclave. We were so LUCKY!!!! THANK YOU MIKE FOR AN AWESOME TOUR!!!!

    Response from Host, May 2025

Thank you so much for the super nice review—I really appreciate it. Yeah, we got very lucky. Very lucky. Now that there’s a new pope elected, maybe things will open back up. But the last two weeks have been pretty difficult. We were actually the last tour to go through there. A very, very historic moment.

    Not to be missed!

    Nicole_L, Apr 2025
