Itinerary
Meet a driver at your Lisbon hotel or the cruise port for a morning departure—the exact meeting time can be tailored to your schedule and preferences. Begin the 86 mile (139 km.) trip from Lisbon to Tomar, a picturesque city that was once the seat of the Order of the Knights Templar.
The first stop of the day is the Convento da Ordem de Cristo, or Convent of the Order of Christ, which was founded in 1118. Learn the story of the Knights Templar as you explore the spectacular convent, which combines a range of architectural styles to dramatic effect.
Pause for lunch in Tomar, then continue to Alcobaca, at 41-mile (67-km) drive towards the coast. In Alcobaca, you’ll have the afternoon to explore the Monastery of Alcobaca, which was founded by King Alfonso I in the 12th century. See the tomb of King Pedro I of Portugal alongside that of his murdered lover, Ines de Castro, and take in the intricate detail work of the Cistercian Gothic landmark.
Following your time at the Monastery of Alcobaca, begin the 75-mile (122-km) return trip to Lisbon, where this tour concludes with drop-off at your original departure point.

John, the driver, picked us up on time, right at our hotel. He was not only knowledgeable on the Knights, he was passionate about it. We had a wonderful day exploring along with a fabulous lunch at the “Baby Pig”! We were never rushed and all questions were welcomed. John’s gift for storytelling combined with his sense of humor made for a memorable day!

Valerio was the BEST tour guide we had in our entire stay in Portugal. He is a historian at heart and an amazing communicator as he shares his passion, perspectives and bridges the gap when providing the story and history of the Medieval Knights Templar. Valerio was able to show my sister and I not only the sites we wanted to see but also was able to walk away with way more all encompassing knowledge about Portugal. This tour was the best and our guide was the very best at his craft.

I don’t know why more people don’t visit this! The monastery was mind blowing and our guide was great. Such enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge.
He added a 2nd church and monastery in Batahla that was even more incredible.
Totally worth it.
