This boat tour was excellent (and I’ve done a couple in Chicago) staff was pleasant, free soft drinks and lemonade, seating was good. We came very close to leaving time and sat on the side of the boat and was still great. Our tour guide Lynn was extremely knowledgeable and her voice was very pleasant. I would 100% do it again.

This was the perfect activity for us to enjoy the stunning city views on a late summer day on the water and to learn more about Chicago and its fascinating architectural history. Our guide was engaging, the drink bar was a nice perk as we had been and continued to tour and play in the city. Highly recommend

I’m so glad we were able to do this! My group was trying to figure out where to put it in our trip and while it was a very cold day, it was still a blast. We learned so much about not only the physical architecture but also the history of the city of Chicago. The coffee onboard was very good and out your guide had a great way of presenting to buildings to us. I would definitely recommend to those looking for an architecture tour!

An informative and pleasant Chicago Architecture River Cruise

Eileen_P, Sep 2026
The Chicago Architecture River Cruise was aboard the Fort Dearborn, leaving from the Ogden Slip, which was a handy location for us. As a Chicagoan, I usually take the cruise every year. The docent on this cruise was excellent; she pointed out the sites that we should be aware of, new building along the River, including the Riverwalk. Booking through Viator was easy, and when we asked to change our boarding time, the Viator rep handled the request easily.

Very informative tour. History of the city and description of lovely buildings. We had some rain during the trip but they passed out ponchos to everyone which was really nice.

Take this cruise on your 1st day

Worth it. If you do this on the first day of your visit, you will see the city a bit differently for the rest of your trip. Gives a good view of the buildings and their history that you can’t get from a street view.

The original architecture tour

John_B, Sep 2026
A very hot day in Chicago so it was OK that the boat had covered lower deck. Otherwise it might’ve been a no go. But the boat was not what was pictured. It was an older boat in the picture that I booked because it looked quaint and different. Staff and amenities on the ship were great, it was cold water, and included soft drinks. Information from the guide to talk to almost an hour and a half about the architecture of the city of Chicago was very good detailed and interesting.

If you’re just looking to be on the river, this option is fine. But if you’re looking for an informative tour and a good overall experience, I’d recommend looking elsewhere. The photo is misleading - you won’t be on the smaller boat pictured. The check-in staff weren’t very attentive; seating was first come, first served with no real seat management, and several guests were left without seats. Don’t expect much assistance from the crew. Free water, coffee, tea, and bar fountain soda/pop are available downstairs, but if you sit there, you will struggle to hear the guide or see what they’re pointing out. Overall, the guide was fine but the crew seemed disengaged, which made for a pretty lackluster experience overall.

The tour was great. It was very informative and the guide was knowledgeable. We appreciated the smaller boat and more intimate experience over the larger boats.

Exceptionally Knowledgeable Guide

Chadd_C, Aug 2026
Our guide had an architectural history degree which made him extremely knowledgeable, but his ability to weave the Chicago skyline into stories was exceptional.

Great Chicago River Architecture Boat Tour

Mary_I, Aug 2026
Really nice size boat. Not too large. Free refreshments!!! Really good tour guide.comfortable seating. Good commucation.

Nice boat, great docent!

Steve_M, Aug 2026
A great tour in a well kept boat. Our docent did a great job, and was very knowledgeable. I can’t recall his name, but he was a lifelong resident of Chicago.

My review

Mike_A, Aug 2026
It’s very educational and lots to learn about the history and architecture of Chicago. We had a great time.

California in Chicago

Mylee_T, Aug 2026
Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history, architecture, landscape and more. It was a fun 90 minutes of touring Chicago.

Tour wasn't worth it!

william_f, Aug 2026
We were forced to sit downstairs on the boat and so many of the points made by the guide were unintelligible. Hard to see the buildings. Also, did not appreciate the cheap-shot taken at St. Louis, a city with a history that is longer and more interesting than Chicago's. Also, the Cardinals history has always made the Cubbies the laughingstock of baseball and all sports.

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Hi William, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m sorry to hear that your experience onboard did not meet expectations. While we utilize both decks for seating on one of our vessels, all guests should be able to clearly hear and follow the architectural narration. I apologize that portions were difficult to understand from your seating area, and I’ll be sure to share that feedback with our team. I also appreciate you mentioning the St. Louis comment. Our docents sometimes incorporate lighthearted humor and city rivalries into their narration, but it’s never our intention to take away from a guest’s experience. Thank you again for sailing with us and for sharing your feedback. Best, Chicago Line Cruises Team

Must do Chicago River Tour!

Melissa_W, Aug 2026
This boat tour was super informative and fun! We liked it that is was a smaller ship. The bar staff were efficient and friendly. Lynn, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable and made several suggestions on attractions beyond the river.

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Melissa, thank you so much for the kind review! We’re so glad you enjoyed the smaller, more intimate experience onboard and had a great time with our crew. We’ll be sure to pass your kind words along to Lynn and our bar team. We hope to welcome you back onboard again soon Best, Chicago Line Cruises Team

Haley_M, Jul 2026
The boat ride is a relaxing way to see and learn about Chicago. My only complaint is that the picture of the boat you see when booking may not be the boat you end up getting on. We were reserved a two storied vessel when I wanted a smaller group experience.

Response from Host, Aug 2026

Haley, Thank you for sailing with us and for sharing your feedback! We’re glad you enjoyed seeing and learning about Chicago from the river. While the vessel pictured during booking may vary based on our daily schedule and operations, we understand how that could be disappointing when you were hoping for a smaller group experience. If you give us a call we can help make sure you are on the smaller vessel which normally sails on the odd hours.

Great tour!

Leslie_S, Jun 2026
The tour guide was great! Very knowledgeable, but not just a dry recitation of facts! The boat was smaller, which was nice, because it was more personal.. We saw many that were really large and not so personal.

Excellent Adventure

Donald_L, Jun 2026
We went in late afternoon, great time to see the city from the water. Tyler was an excellent guide and gave great insight into the history of the architecture and how it evolved over the last 100+ years. Best to sit top deck to take everything in but wear sunscreen. Refreshments were easily accessible and the staff were friendly beginning to end

It’s was informative just didn’t expect the tour guide to speak the whole experience I think a lil time to just watch and intake and enjoy would enhance the experience.

It was the best part of our Chicago experience. The guide was informative and the buildings were magnificent. Not over crowded. Great experience.

Great Tour. Highly recommend.

Dina_C, Jun 2026
The actual tour was amazing. The guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. My only complaint is the location was difficult to find and the instructions were not easy to follow, especially if you don't know the area

It was a very good tour!

Paula_M, Jun 2026
The speaker told us the history of buildings and the surroundings. Great details. Loved hearing all the information!

Worth it, honestly.

Best choice for an architecture tour because boat is smaller than other organizers. Excellent commentary. Free soft drinks. Very pleasant boarding location.

Architectural river boat cruise

Marcia_H, May 2026
The Chicago Riverboat Architecture tour is a must do if you travel to or live near Chicago. I have taken these tours in past years when I lived in the city, and I’m always impressed with and proud of Chicago’s international renowned reputation regarding historic building architecture as well as the recent and ongoing architectural achievements that make up Chicago’s downtown and skyline. The tour I booked via Viator was excellent because of the docent’s knowledge of Chicago’s building history and architectural significance. I highly recommend this tour!
