1 Day in San Francisco for First Timers

Curated by Claire Bullenwho spent several years in San Francisco—and still adores the City by the Bay.

Few cities can rival San Francisco in the looks department. With its stately Victorian homes, roller-coaster hills, and sweeping coastal vistas, the City by the Bay is a certified stunner. But its charms aren’t just found at surface level. Home to vibrant neighborhoods from Chinatown to the Mission District, and packed with popular tourist attractions from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge, the city offers so much to see and discover.

As someone who lived in SF—and returns as often as I can—I know how challenging it can be to pack in all the highlights. But even if you have just 1 day in San Francisco, that’s still enough time to get acquainted. Here’s how.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a cruise on San Francisco Bay—and right under the Golden Gate.

No matter the season, San Francisco is often chilly and shrouded in fog; bring warmer clothes, and more layers, than you think you’d need.

Morning

If you only have one day in town, trying to see it all on foot might not be the best idea—particularly given San Francisco's notoriously challenging hills. Instead, explore in true laid back California style when you book a driving tour of the city’s highlights, preferably by vintage Volkswagen van. Head to lively neighborhoods from The Castro to Haight-Ashbury, discover the twists and turns of Lombard Street, and soak up the city’s lore when you learn more about the Summer of Love and hippie icons like Janis Joplin and the Grateful Dead.

Afternoon

Now that you’ve checked many San Francisco sights and stories off your list, it’s time for a break—and a bite. The City by the Bay is renowned for its international, farm-fresh food scene, and the hip Mission District is the perfect place for a culinary immersion. On a walking and eating tour of the neighborhood, you can learn more about its Latinx community, enjoy an eclectic range of bites, and look out for local murals and street art between stops.

Night

San Francisco is a famously romantic city—and you’ll discover why when you set off on a sunset cruise of its scenic Bay. Watch the twinkling lights of the city skyline come on as you glide past Alcatraz and sail right beneath the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. Sure, by the end of the tour you might have left your heart in San Francisco, but that’s a risk we all have to take.
