Ali’iolani Hale is home to the Hawaii State Supreme Court, which is the state’s highest court. It is the former seat of the Kingdom of Hawaii’s government and was originally built as a palace for the reigning monarch Kamehameha V—hence its place on the US National Register of Historic Places.

Inside Ali’iolani Hale, you can see exhibits that provide insights into the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, Hawaii’s transition from a kapu system, disputes over land rights, and the islands’ experiences in WWII. Exhibits include historic artifacts, texts, and short films.

Yes, Ali’iolani Hale has appeared in movies and TV shows. The building starred in the 2010s remake of the TV series Hawaii Five-0, where it stood in for the exterior of the task force’s headquarters, as well as in courthouse scenes in the 2014 Tim Burton movie Big Eyes.
