Don’t do it. And if you do, read my experience before booking.

The Good: John Lucca was fantastic during the Pompeii Tour. The transports were on time to and from the train station. Train service was great. No issues. Train stations very easy to navigate. The bad: The seats on the train were not together. 2 of the 4 of us had to sit next to strangers. Antonio (the “English-speaking” scenic tour guide) was nice but spoke very limited English. The terrible: the pizza place was average at best. The service was rude and seemed annoyed we came and they had to serve us. The food was good but nothing special and you could choose between a margarita pizza or a marina pizza. The unacceptable: the pizza place DEMANDED a tip for the (5) drinks we purchased out of pocket. Literally stood over us saying they needed a tip and when I gave a couple Euro they said “no. You need to tip more”. Nearly ruined the whole experience. When I told the driver about it he laughed. Mind you, we tipped the tour guides $90 collectively but tipping at restaurants is not common in any of the restaurants nor per google. To be taken to an unknown restaurant by the tour and then be demanded a $6 tip for $24 in drinks in Italy is WILD!

    Response from Host, Jan 2026

Dear guest, Thank you for sharing your feedback. I’m truly sorry to hear the experience left you disappointed — especially because our goal is for guests to feel supported and comfortable from start to finish. I’d like to add a few clarifications, not to dismiss your perspective, but to provide accurate context and explain how we normally handle situations like the one you described. After the tour, we sent a friendly follow-up message to the phone number provided to ask how everything went and to invite feedback while details were still fresh. We never received a reply. When an issue happens during the service — particularly something sensitive like feeling pressured at a venue — contacting us immediately allows us to intervene in real time and resolve it on the spot. On the train seating: while your party was not placed in a single “four-seat bay,” you were still seated close together in the same carriage — two guests on adjacent seats and the other two on adjacent seats, essentially along the same line and not far apart. We book rail tickets daily for guests and groups are almost always seated together in the same coach, which is why your comment stood out. Regarding the restaurant and menu: the pizza options are clearly stated in the product description and inclusions prior to booking, and it is also clearly indicated that beverages are excluded. In addition, we offered complimentary fried food at our expense as a small gesture to make the meal feel more welcoming. About Antonio: he works with our guests every day, and the vast majority of our clientele is English-speaking. We have not received consistent feedback indicating language limitations, so your report is unusual — but we are still reviewing it internally, because we do take standards seriously and want to ensure expectations are met. At the same time, we feel it’s important to reflect the full scope of what you described. In your own review, you acknowledge several elements were delivered properly — transportation was on time, the train service itself was smooth, and the stations were easy to navigate. The central component of the day is the guided visit of Pompeii, and that is where the core value of this experience sits. We absolutely understand how an uncomfortable moment at the restaurant can sour the end of a day, and we are addressing it with the venue. However, given the number of services included and successfully provided throughout the tour, a 2-star rating appears disproportionate to what you also describe as a generally well-executed program — especially when the issue you report relates to a tipping demand, rather than the main guided Pompeii experience. Best regards Cristina Discover Italy
