Itinerary

While in Ketchikan, fill your craving for excitement with this half-day off-road vehicle and canoe adventure. After port pickup, your shore excursion begins with a safety briefing on operating a 4WD Jeep Wrangler® at the activities center. You’ll be placed in groups of four, and during the drive, you’ll switch drivers so that everyone has a chance to get behind the steering wheel.

Time to set off! Rev your way on a route deep inside Tongass National Forest, on back roads and through rain forests. Using two-way radios, your group leader-guide shares commentary on the local geology. Blaze past old-growth and new-growth woods, and stop to take pictures at stunning vantage points.

When you arrive at Lake Harriet Hunt, prepare for your next mode of transport — a Native American–style canoe stretching 37 feet (11 meters) long with a capacity to carry 20 passengers. Make your way across the mountain lake, and then follow your guide on a nature hike through an old-growth forest.

Settle down for a snack break at a forest camp, and recharge with clam chowder, smoked salmon and bread rolls buttered with local wild-berry jam, and wash it all down with coffee or hot chocolate.

With plenty of photos and great memories, board your transport that takes you back to Ketchikan port.

Great Adventure

Gary_K, Aug 2025
This is a scenic and fun Alaskan experience. The guide was very knowledgeable about the lical flora and fauna. The canoe part was most enjoyable with a wonderful taste of salmon and clam chowder.

Don't listen to the doubters - have some fun

Thomas_F, Aug 2025
Those complaining the canoe was short were on a different tour. I would say it was just about right for either novice or expert. An Olympic rower would not be impressed but as vacation tour, it was excellent timing.

Disappointing and not worth the money

Emily_M, Jun 2025
I had high hopes for this excursion, but unfortunately it fell flat. There was a lot of standing around and waiting — it felt very disorganized from start to finish. The canoe portion lasted less than 5 minutes. Our guide was friendly, and there was a decent snack and a short 0.25-mile nature walk, but it was not at all the active experience I expected. The jeep ride included two quick photo stops but offered very few views and was honestly pretty boring. At one point, a guide was being yelled at over an issue with one of the jeeps, which made things uncomfortable for everyone. We spent a lot of time just waiting for transportation back to town, and we didn’t see any wildlife throughout the trip. I booked this expecting an active, engaging excursion — instead, it felt like a waste of time and money.

Disorganized and Rushed

Marcy_H, Jun 2025
The tour itself was awesome, but it was very disorganized. They lost our reservation and then then apologize... but we were almost 45 minutes late starting and then they really rushed us through the nature hike and Canoe portion. When they served us the food, they told us we only had a minute to eat it (hot cocoa and clam chowder & coffee) so we couldn't enjoy it. Made us sad, looked really good. Was a lot of money for an excursion to make such a big mistake then rush you.

Great off-road experience! It was fun and easy for first timers, this tour is full of beautiful views of Tongass Rainforest.

It was ok

Alina_B, Aug 2024
This tour was just ok. We spent way more time on logistics, waiting, and the drive to/from the tour sites than we did on the actual jeep ride or the canoe. The Jeep ride is really only fun for the driver. If you have two drivers in the car, you only get about 5-7 mins to actually drive. The canoe ride was extremely short. We ended up with another group with many children and teens which made the canoe experience a lot less pleasant. All the workers and guides were very nice, but our main guide did not provide any commentary while on the Jeep ride, and his forest walk narration was uninspiring. He also isn't the best picture taker, so we ended up with not so great photos on the canoe where we couldn't take pictures ourselves. Overall, hours of logistics for maybe a total of 1 hr of activities made this tour just ok for us.

Great excursion!

Christy_G, Jun 2024
We loved this! The staff was amazing & the adventure was perfect! It was the perfect ship excursion for our family.

Beautiful lake and amazing clam chowder!

Larry_C, Jul 2023
Kaitlin was a great guide. Very knowledgeable and very kind. The clam chowder was fantastic! The jeep ride was fun if you don’t typically four wheel, otherwise it was a little lackluster. Overall a good experience.

Don't go on this trip !!

Robert_O, Jul 2023
The view at the top of the jeep drive was OK- but that's all! The canoe trip was poorly organised. We had to wait for 45 minutes at the lakeside before other people joined us. It was a short trip across the lake, and not fun at all. The nature walk was far too short, and the snacks extremely rudimentary. The jeep drive was extremely uncomfortable and not enjoyable at all, unless you were driving. Far too bumpy. Instructions on how to drive the vehicle were poor, and badly organised. My impression is that they were just "money making", trying to get as many tourists through as possible, with poor customer care. Don't go on this trip!!

Off-road Adventure and Mystical Secret Garden

Christian_P, Jul 2022
Off-roading in Alaska is an adventure, but with our great Jeep Safari guides, it was even better - more entertaining, more fun. The canoe part was great too - walking through the rain forest was like visiting a magical secret hide-away. Hollywood couldn't do better. And then there's a special culinary surprise awaiting halfway through the canoe trip. Thoughly enjoyable - I recommend it highly.

We had a blast!

james_R, Jun 2022
The canoe ride over to their pavilion was a blast! Our 6 year old loved it. The Jeeps were fun V the guide had so much energy and knowledge it made it fun for all!

Our trip canceled

Gary_K, Sep 2021
Our trip got canceled and we were disappointed that we were not notified ahead of time. We tried to call the local number but no one answered. We were really pleased with Viators response with a refund offer.

Great Tour Guide from Nebraska!

Kimberly_J, Aug 2019
Jeeps were in good condition and we really appreciated letting my husband and I have our own jeep as it we were not able to get into the back seat very easily. We did not see any bear during the nature walk but our guide was informative. We learned about native wildlife and plants during our nature walk and the canoe ride was fun! We had a little canoe race on the way back from the nature walk and the Nebraska canoe was victorious! GO BIG RED!!!

Nice job good crew

peter c, Jun 2019
We started on a short bus ride, then in to a Jeep. A little to fast on a rainy day on the rock trail. Might think about taking it in 4 wheel low and a lil slower. We then put long rain coats on and rowed a large canoe with 25 of us to a spot on the lake where we we're served clam chowder and a salmon spread, pretty good. A walk in the forest and back to town again. It would have been nice to drive back in the Jeeps. I would rate the help a 10 and the excursion one i would do again.

Fun for entry level participants

Julie B, Jun 2019
Overall this excursion was a lot of fun, but it was easy stuff. Dont get me wrong, it was 'off road' type driving on an old logging road up the side of a mountain. And then a bigger canoe-style row boat across the lake - just as described. No complaints there, just wish the Jeep part was longer! One road up and down the mountain with two stops to look out and take pictures. Supposedly the lead car with our guides saw a bear as we turned onto the old road, but that would be the only 'wildlife' seen. Rowing was easy, just wish the guide would have called out to row in unison... every inexperienced person smacking their paddles in the water and on each others oars was a little annoying. Snacks across the river were good - clam chowder, hot chocolate, coffee, bread, strawberry jam and goldfish crackers. It was a hot day so some water would have been good, but that's ok! Beautiful day on a beautiful lake in beautiful Alaska! I'd add a star if they'd add more off road time.

Great Guide

ABNChemo, May 2019
Overall this was a fun adventure. The Jeep portion was over a old logging road so not truly off road, then you take a short canoe ride over to an really cool camp and a walk thru the woods. We would have liked more time to explore the woods but our ship time didn’t allow it. Overall it was a fun time.

Great fun!

Overall the excursion was fun. The canoe ride wasn't too far, but there was no walk in the woods. It would of been nice if we could have done that. That's the only reason I dock it by one star. The off roading was a lot of fun. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Overall I would recommend it.

This a great excursion. We loved the canoe ride and the jeep ride was fun too. Oliver, our tour guide did a great job. The clam chowder and not chocolate was great. Could have used a little more time to enjoy it though.

The jeep ride was truly off-road. Only wish we could have viewed more wildlife. The canoe trip was excellent, the food tasty, and the nature walk very interesting.

Machelle F, Jul 2017
Wow, this was an amazing excursion we booked separately from the Disney Cruise. So worth it...small group, safe vehicles and knowledgeable, fun, guides. The canoe safari, lake and salmon bake were ideal. One blip... we were the last excursion of the day and the bus that was suppose to take us back to base, forgot us. The guide had to paddle back out to the middle of the lake to get cell reception, to remind them we were there. delay was less than an hour. Because we were a small group, there were no real complaints. However, had this been an excursion booked from the ship, it would have probably gotten ugly. Take bug repellant as the bugs around the lake were plentiful.

Kristen G, Jun 2017
Jeep was absolutely a ton of fun! Canoe in the rain a little less so, but still fun, not long, and they had hot clam chowder and hot chocolate for us, plus a short walk in the woods. Canoeing back was beautiful, rain had stopped and the view was awesome. Overall great excursion, we could not stop laughing on the jeep ride!

DALE G, Aug 2016
A good tour, access to experiences, views, and information probably not available other ways, tour guides were safe, very informative and many first hand experiences which added a great deal to the tour and information, the cookout was great, enjoyed the up close and personal access to the flora and fauna.

Live the bantering between guides Kevin and Jansen, they make the trip fun! Canoe portion was OK nothing exciting. Self drive jeep drive up a rocky bumpy Tongas mountain was awesome!

Matthew L, Jul 2016
The tour itself was great - really fun time doing both the canoe trip delicious clam chowder and salmon snacks, and the jeep off-road tour. People were very friendly, but just two comments that made us give a lower rating - first, our Jeep guide Daron would not stop talking about the few types of trees that we saw - should have just given us a brief story, and let us admire the scenery in peace for the rest of the time. Second, the scheduled time for the trip just barely fits in to the allotted time we had from the cruise ship. We ended up making it back in time, but were actually later than the scheduled departure time. They guaranteed they would transport us to the next stop if needed, but that's not good enough. We would have been furious if we did not make it back in time. My wife and I both felt our blood pressure increase with each passing late minute - they need to make the trip just 15-30 minutes shorter or depart 30 minutes earlier and eliminate any avoidable stress.
