This is my first trip back to Galveston in over forty years, so I had to make sure to locate a fully immersed tour experience. This absolutely didn’t disappoint❤️
If you’re looking for a tour that doesn’t just show you Galveston—but moves you—the Juneteenth and Beyond Black History Van Tour absolutely delivers.
From the moment you step into the air-conditioned van, you can feel this isn’t going to be a typical sightseeing experience. It’s immersive, personal, and deeply meaningful. The tour is led by passionate, highly knowledgeable guides who don’t just recite facts—they bring history to life with storytelling that’s vivid, emotional, and unforgettable.
What makes this tour exceptional is how it connects you to the real story of Juneteenth—right where it happened. As you travel through Galveston, you visit powerful landmarks like Reedy Chapel, the Juneteenth marker, and historic cultural sites along the Strand, each one layered with stories of resilience, struggle, and triumph. And instead of feeling like distant history, it feels immediate—like you’re standing in the very moments that changed lives forever.
The small-group setting makes a huge difference. It creates an intimate, almost conversational atmosphere where questions are encouraged, and every guest feels included. Many visitors say it feels less like a tour and more like a shared journey through time—one that leaves you reflecting long after it’s over.
And then there’s the impact. This isn’t just informative—it’s eye-opening. Guests consistently describe the experience as powerful and enlightening, often saying they learned stories and perspectives they were never taught before. One reviewer captured it perfectly: it’s like “stepping out of the darkness of ignorance into the light of knowledge.”
By the end, you don’t just leave with facts—you leave with a deeper appreciation of Galveston’s role in American history and a renewed respect for the legacy of Juneteenth itself.
Bottom line: Dr. Araminta provides an unforgettable experience!! This tour is a must-do. It’s thoughtful, moving, and incredibly well-executed—a five-star experience that educates your mind and stays with your heart.
Protect Dr. Amarinta at all costs ✊🏾✊🏾❤️❤️

The Juneteenth and Beyond tour was incredibly informative, offering a new perspective on Texas history and explained the unique nature of slavery in a port city compared to traditional farm slavery that isn't talked about in the textbooks. I was especially moved to see how Galveston paved the way for such a remarkably strong and resilient Black community to flourish in Galveston afterward including the first Black Baptist Church in TX. It is a must-do experience that brings the true story of the holiday and the island's heritage to life. Book the tour..you won't regret it!!!

Dr. Sorrell is very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of Galveston when speaking about the African American experiences endured. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of different locations we visited. I highly recommend this tour for anyone who would like to know this history of Galveston. I learned so much and the information provided by Dr. Sorrell that I'm going to research further information on some of the subjects provided. A real food for thought experience. You will not be disappointed. Thank you Dr. Araminta Sorrell.

Excellent cultural tour for all. The tour director went all the way back to Christopher Columbus to explain the origin of indentured servants and slavery. Juneteenth was the final freedom call! We learned a lot about the history of Galveston and how the culture has been maintained.
Response from Host, Mar 2025
Thank you, Sharon, for touring with me and for your kind words about our tour. I look forward to seeing you in Galveston on your next visit.

I HIGHLY recommend this absolute gem of an experience, especially if you are visiting Galveston for a cruise and looking for something to do before/after. It is so rare to enjoy a tour where your guide is equal parts brilliant and kind but Dr. Araminta is both and then some. Her passion and dedication to the community shine bright, the tour and the information that she provided went above and beyond the description, and we were introduced to a number of local experts and historians along the way who shared stories that wove an incredibly rich tapestry. And while my 9 going on 16 year old niece tried to pretend like she was too cool for school (and I quote "I'm on break, so I'm not in learning mode"), I've heard her share 3 different things that she learned on the tour in the week since we've been home. If you are lucky enough to have the chance to book this, DO NOT miss out!!
Response from Host, Mar 2025
Thank you, Rhea, for touring with me. I am very happy your niece had a good experience with us. I hope to see you two again on Galveston Island!

I would highly recommend this tour because it brings a wealth of history and knowledge to the forefront to experience the reality of our heritage. It's like a taster tour well planned that motivates and inspires you to come back on your own for a deeper dive into the Juneteenth experience and more. Job well done!

Dr. Sorrell provided an exceptional tour. Her passion for Black History and culture is infectious. This cultural tour explores more than your typical antidotes. She is keenly aware of drawing people to the truths of history that are not always rightly told or shared in mainstream venues.
Response from Host, Jun 2024
Thank you! It was a pleasure touring with you.

Dr. Araminta Sorrell is a knowledgeable guide. Her overview of Juneteenth and the history of African-Americans in Galveston is phenomenal. She shared information, asked questions about our thoughts and beliefs, and answered our queries. It was time well spent with a true teacher who includes the tourist/local in her passion for the area and the history that has not been regularly taught. We kept saying, "Wow! and "Who knew?", as she took us from location to location and gave us facts. I even took notes to share my learning with others!
Response from Host, Jun 2024
Thank you! It was a pleasure touring with you.

Dr. Sorrell Aramint is very knowledgeable and engaging. We enjoyed our tour and we left feeling connected to history.
Kenneth_L, May 2024
Dr. Sorrell is an incredibly knowledgeable historian, and provides a great tour, covering important topics like the big hurricane that destroyed Galveston in 1900, Emancipation, general Galveston history, and the experience of African Americans in Texas. Skip the ghost tours and learn something important with Dr. Sorrell!
Kristen_N, May 2024
Dr. Sorrell did a marvelous job of painting a colorful story of the history of persons of African descent in Galveston. She went above and beyond to bring many historical sites to life throughout the tour and painted a vivid picture of what life was like for Galvestonians. The van was very clean and cool with A/C, which is definitely needed on a hot spring or summer day on a tropical island. If my husband and I could give 10 stars, we would! Needless to say, we highly recommend this tour if you/group want a deep dive into history beyond what is written in textbooks.
susan_D, May 2024
Araminta was an excellent tour guide and was so knowledgeable and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of Galveston as it pertained to Blacks over the years and being able to view historic sights. Araminta was extremely accommodating and willing to stop anywhere we indicated that we’d like a picture.
