Very interesting. Learned more about history than I ever knew in first 20 minutes with Stephen. My husband knows a lot of history but learned some new interesting facts. Stephen kept it interesting for all and tried to be sure we were in shade and could all hear him. Brought the history to life!

Viator historical tour of Boston

Diane_K, Jul 2026
The tour guide showed up drunk - dishevelled, slurring unable to speak clearly. Started foaming at the mouth after speaking for ten minutes we had to leave the group and pay to join another. Worst experience ever

Great if you love detailed history. Can be long if you are looking for the “high points” of Boston history.

Gina_R, Jun 2026
The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable of the history of Boston. But this is a *highly* historical tour with *a lot* of granular detail. As a family, you will see areas that may be a little sketch (people drugged out in Boston Common, homeless person yelling profanities at the group and tour guide) but honestly, that’s pretty typical for a city. This may be too long and detailed to keep the interest of kids (mine are teenagers). That said, the tour delivered exactly what was described.

Response from Host, Jun 2026

Hello, thank you for the kind and accurate words. Your family were a delight. I wish, as does the city and many tour guides, that, our Micro-skid row had chosen anywhere, to loiter, but a section of the Freedom Trail. On the whole, for a diverse and compassionate city, we have done quite a decent job providing services to thouse unhoused, yet everywhere is a bit frayed on the edges. I have made a conscious effort to maintain cordial relationships with that small crew. A dollar here, a water there, and I am confident they pose no threat, But, we walk through an urban center. As you said. It is unpredictable. Reviews like yours help. They can be shown to the apppropriate people and perhaps things will change. I still love our gorgeous city, and I hope a little rubbed off on your family during your visit. We'd love to see you back. Stephen

Stephen was great!

Great tour. The $ 10.00 charge was a bit misleading since the guide relied solely on tips. The “free” tour wasn’t free. Never the less we had a great time.

Fab History Tour

Wow, what a terrific tour of Boston history! We especially liked the anecdotes about notable characters and politicians. Who knew that Ho Chi Minh was a baker at the Parker house!

Hi there, Everything you mentioned was complimentary. I wish you had spoken with me or added some information as to what caused you to leave 3 stars. It is hard to improve without goncrete suggestions. I realize there was nothing we could do about the weather, and thank you for your generous gratuity, but would love to have suggestions that would me help me improve the experience. Thanks, Stephen

You guys were so much fun. True troopers on a brutally cold day. And coming all the way here to see our beloved Celtics. It warms the heart of every Bostonian..

Rainy Day Tour

Jill_P, Oct 2025
Our guide did his best to keep us dry during a rainy Boston morning. As in most of these group tours it's a little tough to hear everything, but we felt like we had a nice walk, and any questions we had were answered.

Stephen Uys The Best Tour Guide in Boston! ~Kit from Oregon

Annette_D, Oct 2025
Stephen KNOWS his Boston and Massachusetts’ history! He not only knows the “normal history” that you would expect from a tour guide, but he enlivens his presentation with many anecdotes and interesting stories! His presentation is not strictly linear. Nor does it follow a rigid chronological script. At the conclusion of the almost 3-hour tour (Scheduled for 2 hours) We had a very thorough understanding of the history of both Boston and The Commonwealth. We understood the unique personalities involved and their passion. We realized the nuances and how history can be influenced by a single pull of a trigger or a graphic on a broadside that received broad distribution. Damn interesting!

Response from Host, Jan 2026

Thank you so much for the kind words. I do apologize for running a bit over and should have explained that I was adjusting oir route spontaneously due to the gusry wind and some requested breaks. I am grateful tat you stuck with it and remained engaged. I someties have parties who line up like ants and throw the timing but recently started using a voice amolifier to try and make sure all can hear. I also must admit that I am sometines guilty of losing track of time as I share the hstory that can sweep me up. Thanks again. Stephen.

Thank you for an amazing tour!

Olga_P, Sep 2025
Reading the reviews I knew this tour was the right one for me. Stephen is extremely knowledgeable and engaging, he makes the most of your time sharing a lot of information and fun stories about Boston history. Maybe a bit challenging to follow for non native speakers, he goes fast! We had a small group, I felt glad I wasn’t in any of the huge tours around us. Thank you Stephen for this high value tour, the end story was even emotional! I will see you again when I’ll be back to the city with the family!

I’d skip this one..

Wendi_f, Sep 2025
Not my favorite tour unfortunately. Tour guide was very long winded and wasn’t able to “read the room”. Multiple people including myself left the tour early. Drawn out and was running over scheduled time.

Response from Host, Sep 2025

I am sorry you didn't enjoy the tour. It is a deep dive into our city, but your advice is valid. Some of the less exciting stories could use an edit. Unfortunately those who also left, left due to their young children's'needs,, not the tour, but I do take honest feedback seriously.

Historical walking tour - Boston

Mike, Aug 2025
Lots of walking without a break - plenty of background noise especially from the plethora of booming duck tours. Interesting sites but little time to take photographs and no time to visit the sites. Stephen had excellent knowledge and makes everything interesting but should try and speak slower as he is competing with a noisy background

Response from Host, Nov 2025

thank you for the review. I take advice very seriously and have purchased a voice amplifier microphone as I agree. Boston can be very noisy.

This is a very information heavy tour. Get your history thinking cap on! Stephen was very thorough and incredibly knowledgeable about Boston’s history. I liked how he organized the information to make it all make sense. I loved it. You can tell he is passionate about what he’s talking about which makes it an engaging experience.

Book It!

Full history of Boston from someone who clearly loves history

Mark_W, Aug 2025
Stephen loved sharing his knowledge and love of history. The tour went well beyond Colonial history to include Boston’s Puritanical beginnings through today. Tour was small and very easy to manage.

Candace_M, Aug 2025
Stephen talked for 1/2 hr. at the starting point & began with the Restoration and ended almost at present day when we finally got to the first stop, the State House. A family of 4 left first after about 25 minutes. I left after 49. Nice guy, very knowledgeable, but he spoke too fast and gave out way too much info. He did not read his audience. After 15 minutes we needed to start walking. I cut my losses and don’t regret it.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

This was the single most unliked part of my tour. I have cut the intro down to about ten minutes. While no guide likes bad reviews, I take them seriously and they often help me improve. If you are ever back in town, I would love to have you back and am sure you will love the improvements inspired by people like you who have taken the time to tell me what was wrong with the experience.
