My family and I took a tour of the abalone farm on May 27, 2026. Our tour guide, Karen, was charming, friendly and very informative about the farm, the abalone, and about the various other sea animals and seaweed in the area. It was a wonderful hands on experience, and we learned a lot. Tasting sea grapes with ponzu sauce was fun, as was tasting some of the seaweed and, of course, cooked abalone. I highly recommend this tour!

We were pleasantly surprised by all that we learned today. Carlos did an excellent job reading the crowd, answering questions and sharing his knowledge. We enjoyed the interactive tour and were intrigued by the samplings offered. At the end of the tour we headed to the food truck for some beer and steamed abalone with sea grapes. Yum!!!

All about abalone and the abalone farm. Very knowledgeable tour guide. Got to hold them and feel them clasping your finger. Tasted some of the seaweed they eat, really good. Got to taste the cooked abalone, it was good. Very different and interesting.

As an East Asian, abalone has always been considered one of the most expensive seafood delicacies, though I never really understood why. This tour was incredibly interesting and informative—it gave me a much deeper appreciation for abalone and the reasons behind its high value. I truly enjoyed the experience and learned a lot.
Response from Host, Mar 2026

We had some extra time before leaving Kona, so we booked this tour because it’s close to the airport. It was very interesting and ‘hands on’! Our guide was great and funny too! We got to taste abalone and seaweed! 😋
Mark_L, Jan 2026
The tour was about an hour long, and very informative. I essentially knew nothing about abalone farming. We had our ten year old grandson with us, and he said he liked the tour. Our guide engaged all of our group in discussions about the various aspects to the farm. At the end, we were all given a steamed shell of abalone to eat. We also tried the sea grapes and sea weed during the trip.
Response from Host, Jan 2026

A very interesting tour led by our guide, Kai. Approximately a half hour Uber ride from Kailua pier in Kona, my husband and I (in our 70’s) thoroughly enjoyed this one hour walk around (with a cane) tour of the farm. Kai explained in detail many things about Abalone, how they mate, grow and taste. We purchased a few souvenirs and had lunch next door at the Kona BBQ food truck. Great experience , highly recommend!
Thomas_Y, Apr 2025
The abalone farm was nice. Never seen one before. Was hoping for better samplers to test. Next time we will just eat next door and use the tour money to buy abalone to eat
Andrea_L, Apr 2025

Super informative tour about the abalone farm. You get to taste seaweed - like kale, sea peas, and of course canned and fresh abalone. I liked holding the abalone and seeing his eyes, shell, radula, and foot. It’s only an hour, but worth it. Afterwards, you can taste more abalone at the food truck.

Fascinating to learn about the farming of these gastropod delicacies with (spoil alert) no brain. A small group setting the best.
