Itinerary
Your private Amalfi Coast tour starts as you depart Rome by sedan or minivan for the drive south into the Campania region of southern Italy.
During the journey, your driver-guide tells you about what to expect from the day.
First, head to Pompeii for a guided tour of the World Heritage-listed ruins that were covered in volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. As you explore with your guide, learn about the discovery of the ruins in the 18th century and hear stories about life in the village during the days of ancient Rome.
In the afternoon, spend some time exploring Positano, where you can enjoy a walk around the delightful village with its white and pastel-colored houses littering the hillside. You can visit the beautiful beaches, where you can relax or have a swim, stroll around the ancient fishing port and see the splendid majolica dome of the church of Santa Maria Assunta.
Your day trip then ends with the drive back to Rome.

Roberto was such a great tour guide. He picked us up and immediately began giving us a extensive history of our surroundings. We met another tour guide at Pompeii, Ciro, he had a history degree and was the best tour guide anyone can ask for. Lunch was at a beautiful restaurant with great views. We decided to not take the return trip to Rome and stayed the night in Positano. I would definitely recommend this experience.

Be sure to bring a water bottle if you head on to Pompeii. It was insanely hot in 2019.
I also brought a snack banana, apple and an egg… despite the amazing lunch the fruit helped with my heat induced headache.
Must wear comfortable shoes! I chose driving moccasins because I wanted my Italy photos to look as nice as the places I visited.
I absolutely loved the guides, both the driver and the Pompeii guide.
It was a good day.
This time around I’m going to book tours around the coast since I’m “training” from Rome to Sorrento then Sorrento to Florence. I’ve enjoyed Viator tours in the States but I do love my Italy :)

Roberto was a total gentleman, great driver and very helpful guide. He arranged for a nice lunch in Positano and despite some terrible weather during the drive and poor traffic conditions he was super smooth and always made us feel safe. Positano is typical Amalfi coast and there are other places to preference but if it’s your thing it’s fine. Pompei was amazing. The local archaeologist guide was an absolute treat, hilarious, informative and made the time fly by. Overall, two great visits but a long day in the car. If you want do it in a day though, this is the way to do it.
Lisa_W, Sep 2024
Positano is simply amazing. We had so much fun strolling the shops and the beach. Pompeii was amazing and Ciro, our guide, was simply fantastic. He had so much knowledge, it was priceless.
Denise_T, Sep 2024
Roberto shepherded our group of seven in an unforgettable experience -- and ensured the aunties were well cared for when mobility challenges threatened to derail their participation. The day was long but the tour well-orchestrated and we were able to see all the sites we wished to visit. Our memories of the day are priceless!

Beautiful experience.
Responsive tour operator connected prior to the tour on phone and email.
Pickup at our home, clean Mercedes mini van, friendly English speaking driver - Anna was excellent! Shared a lot of fun facts and very patient with our questions on landmarks along the way.
Amalfi, Positano were beautiful - we had a little over an hour at each place, wish we had planned to stay overnight at each of those places, and explored more. Ferry ride to Positano was scenic!!.
Guide in Pompeii -Cero - was excellent!!
Started at 6:30am - back by 7:30pm - door-to-door!
Highly recommend for a convenient and hassle-free day trip from Rome!!

Without a doubt, it was Pompeii. Ciro was a great tour guide! He gets 5+ stars. Boat ride only had indoor seating available due to full boat with dirty windows and it ruined the beautiful scenery. Got no time in Positano, very little instruction on meeting point and there was about 1,000 stairs up the mountain. There was a problem withthe dates stamped on our boat tickets and theylet part of the family board and sent the rest to get revised tickets. The boat was leaving as we were coming back with the revised tickets. They were going to split the family up over what was clearly a problem on the tour’s end. If not for Pompeii, this toir would get 0 stars for the money paid vs what you get.

Thank you for your feedback and I am sorry your experience was not a satisfactory one. Im glad you've enjoyed Pompeii with our guide Ciro, and as for the boat , our drivers generally inform clients to try and arrive at the port 5 minutes before in order to get the seats outside the boat. Anyhow if this should not be possible, we always suggest to stay anyhow in the open - the ride is about 30 minutes and if there are no problems with stading versus staying seated , you'll enjoy the most beautiful scenery of the Amalfi coast , that is only possible to enjoy from the sea. Nowdays the road is too busy and therefore to be able and enjoy at full the Amalfi coast and not only the very first part of the coast ( Positano ) , taking a boat is the only option. In regards to the windows, as we had some adverse weather recently , that's the sea salt caused by the waves- As for Positano, there is time for a quick lunch maybe sitting in one of the cafes’ looking over to the beach and a walk through the little village and its shops or for spending some time on the beach, maybe enjoying a refreshing swim. As for the stairs in Positano, there is a road leading up to the parking lot where to meet the driver and from the port to walk thorough the little shops and small city center- There are a few steps but I really do not understand when referring to so many steps .
Kindest Regards
Monica

We started the day right on time with Roberto. He worked diligently to keep us informed about traffic due to falling rocks that blocked typical roads out of Almafi. Roberto made sure we still got to all of our stops in Almafi, Positano, and Pompeii. He was a great driver, and we had a great day!
In Pompeii, Ciro provided a wonderful, multi-generational experience through Pompeii. He efficiently navigated us through the ruins and provided very informative explanations of each ruin.
Great day had by all!
Ted_B, May 2024
Our driver was on time and fairly easy to spot at the determined meeting point. She did a nice job of getting us to and from all of our locations safely and provided commentary on some of the sites along the way. We also had time for a short break on the way to the Almalfi coast. The boat ride was just a ferry ride. Not quite what I was thinking or lead to believe. Our time in Positano was short but it's a small town. Our guide in Pompeii was quite knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the tour. He hit the highlights and explained in detail the ruins and history. I wish we had more time to explore the archeological site. But it was a long day as it is.
Deanna_H, May 2024
Roberta was amazing! While the drive was pretty long, it was beautiful. The van was very comfortable and we stopped a few times which made it very nice. Both towns we stopped in were about the same, very crowded but beautiful. The boat was running late, so our time was cut a little short and Positano. Everybody in our group really enjoyed Pompeii and our tour. There was great as well. I really enjoyed doing this trip with a smaller group as we were able to adjust a little bit easier

Roberto was our driver for our day trip from Rome. He was able to share information about the region and made our drive beautiful and interesting. He was a joy to talk with and learn a little more about the culture of the area. We then met up with Ciro in Pompeii. A 4th generation guide and local Pompeii resident. This was my second tour of the site and I learned so much more than the first time that I was there. We truly had a wonderful visit of the area and would recommend this team to all!

Anna was an awesome driver and helped us figure out where to go in Positano and Amalfi. Paulo was great in Pompeii and the two hours just flew by. Everything was just better than we expected! Btw the weather was perfect this time of year.
David_A, Jan 2024
We had a great time. Our driver picked us up on time and did everything possible to ensure our trip was amazing. Pompeii was amazing. If you want to see Pompeii but are questing the time commitment...its worth it.
Ann_C, Nov 2023
Our tour guide, Ciro, was very informative! He brought Pompeii to life for us. He provided little tidbits that we would have missed just walking the site on our own.
j_r, Oct 2023
The MINIVAN that they crammed 9 ADULTS in for the 12 hour trip smelled like feet. Driver (who did not introduce himself) could not/would not speak English expertly, as described. From Pompeii to Rome he yelled into his phone for hours as he ignored us. He acted like we didn't exist. I felt very unsafe with this behavior.
In addition, the meal that was furnished was bland and tasteless. The only redeeming factor is that there was not much of it.
The Pompeii Tour Guide was Excellent. Hats off to Ciro: a wonderful, engaging, knowledgeable guide. He salvaged the whole day.

Dear Client,
Thank you for your feedback although I'm quite surprised about the content of your complain ( I received your message prior on messanger Viator and therefore know the day you took the tour). That day the driver was Giancarlo, an experienced driver-guide that has been doing many of our Pompeii and Amalfi tours - We have never received so far any complains about Giancarlo being on the phone and if it happens he uses the headphones, also because he wouls risk to be taken away his license and loose his job. In regards to the meal, this consists in a first course and second course - again generally our clients are happy with both, the unparalleled views offered from the location and with the meal .
In regards to the smell of feet - Vans are cleaned daily: of course the driver can not stop clients from taking the shoes off and this may have caused the smell. I'm glad you've enjoyed the Pompeii tour with our guide Ciro.
Kind Regards
Monica

Pompeii guide was great & very knowledgeable.
Unfortunately we missed out on the lunch due to others cancelling so not enough people.
Pick-up was hassle free & our car driver was great.
Cory_T, Oct 2023
Great day taking in the scenery of the Sorrento and Positano coast, a fabulous lunch with a view, and Pompeii was the showstopper. Thank you Anne for a fabulous day in Italy with the family. Highly recommend this tour.
Dan_K, Sep 2023
We loved the semi-private tour set up as we will only do those going forward. Roberto was a fantastic guide/driver and we throughly enjoyed speaking with him. No unexpected but the Amalfi Coast stop was just insanely crowded but nothing to be done for that but it was beautiful but a bit rushed with so many people smashing into the same location, but again that is what it is.
The lunch location and food/service were absolutely amazing. That was our best dinning experience for the entire week we were here that was just fantastic from food, to service, to location we loved it.
Lastly, Pompeii also exceeded our expectations as it was not too crowded and our guide Chiro was also an amazing guide for the tour. We throughly enjoyed Pompeii.
Great job all the way around and we thank you all for your efforts in making it an amazing day.

A lovely day! Yes it is a long day just bc of the driving, but Anna was a great driver and pleasant to be with as she explained the day and the sights to see. Lunch was perfect in a divine little family restaurant. Pompeii- the highlight! Ciro was one of the best guides we have had anywhere! Funny, engaging, so full of love for his heritage as a 4th generation Pompeian and guide! He is a treasure - we learned so much and we’re actually figuring things out in Rome by ourself bc of what we learned in Pompeii!
Eduardo_A, Sep 2023
Both the driver and the tour guy at Pompeii were very nice and provide all explanations about the places seeing. The Pompeii tour guide has and showed in-depth knowledge of the site. Great experience that I recommend as a must-see while visiting Italy

Driving along the coast & stopping for pictures was amazing. Positano was beautiful. Our lunch looking over the water was relaxing & delicious.
Our guide in Pompeii, Ciro, was terrific.
Our driver/guide Anna, was awesome.
This was a wonderful trip from Rome.

This was an excellent trip! Was able to see a lot in the span of one day. Positano was beautiful, wish we could have been there a bit longer than an hour. Pompeii was excellent and so was the tour guide. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. The driver was exceptional, helpful and very nice!
Mark_L, Jun 2023
Our guide was excellent! Very personable and a great driver!
He was knowledgeable about the history as well as current culture.
Melinda_S, Jun 2023
Both Tour guides were excellent. Wish we had more hours in the day to explore pompeii. I appreciated being able to sit back and just enjoy the day vs trying to plan this all out on my own.
Michel_C, Jun 2023
Generally we would have enjoyed more history during the long drive and a longer time in Pompeii.
The site and the quality of our lunch was excellent.
Response from Host, Jun 2023
Dear Client,
Thank you for your feedback . It would have been helpful to know when you took the tour.
Our driver/guides are drivers delivering general type of information about the areas visited. They generally provide information on the way to the Amalfi coast and in regards to Pompeii, our small group includes 2 hrs Guided visit of Pompeii. Of course in Private tours we can adjust according to personal interests , but on small group tours we have balanced the stops so to offer a good overview of the area.
Kind Regards
Monica

This small group tour was, overall, pretty good, however I would recommend just doing a guided tour of Pompeii instead of this particular tour. We had 7 guests in a nice, clean minivan. Not much room, however. 1 up front with the driver, 3 in the second row, and 3 in the back. The driver was not a tour guide, just a driver. After picking up all the guests, we hit the road for several hours (3-4, I'm not exactly sure) going to the Amalfi Coast. Much of the drive was highway, and normal sights to see. Once we got to the Amalfi region, the road becomes much smaller and turns into a very twisty, very narrow road that winds it's way along the coast, through towns and under tunnels. It's very beautiful and interesting, and if it weren't for the bumper-to-bumper traffic, it would've been enjoyable. Instead, however, the traffic made it seem like an endless journey and we were all just ready to arrive at our first stop: Positano.
The driver showed us where to come back to the van, and gave us 70 minutes to walk around and do whatever. The town of Positano is very picturesque and quaint, and there were lots of restaurants, cafes and shops with clothing, artwork, shoes and bathing suits. Unfortunately, it was incredibly crowded. Like, elbow-to-elbow, bumping into people no matter where you go, crowded. Not so enjoyable. Back to the van. So far, I was not impressed with the tour, but the rest of the tour makes up for the Amalfi fail.
Lunch was at an incredibly cute country-type restaurant. It is set on a hill, amongst lemon trees, overlooking the sea. Absolutely gorgeous. The meal is pre-set, no choices, just spaghetti with marinara and bread, with a shot of limoncello for dessert. The limoncello was too strong for my wife, so I had hers too. :) Food was fine, nothing amazing, but the setting more than made up for that, and we really enjoyed this lunch. Back to the van.
Pompeii was where we finally met up with our tour guide, who's name I'm sad to say I cannot recall. It may be Ciro, but I'm not sure. Very good guide, funny and knowledgeable. He claims to be a 3rd or 4th generation guide of Pompeii, and his knowledge certainly made me a believer. I thoroughly enjoyed his tour, and just walking the streets of Pompeii, taking in the sights, and contemplating how impressive their society was so long ago. Very cool stuff, and amazingly well-preserved. After the tour was over, we had a chance to visit the snack stand right outside the ruins, and then it was back to the van for the drive back to Rome.
If it weren't for the terrible traffic and over-crowding of Positano, I'd give this a 5-star rating, but I really believe Amalfi should just be something you go and see yourself, not in a tour. Just take a train, avoid the traffic, and walk around whichever towns in Amalfi you want, taking your time and doing what you want. If you want to see Pompeii (which is a must, in my mind) then absolutely take a guided tour. I just don't know if this particular tour is the best idea. But still, the lunch and Pompeii saved it, and I give it 4-stars.

Overall comments for Amalfi Tour
We were shocked to learn that our van had seats facing each other. With 3 passengers in the front and 6 in the rear cabin, it was an uncomfortable ride for those of us who have long legs, have problems sitting in cramped spaces for long periods of time or have car sickness from riding backwards. This type of vehicle should be discontinued for your tours. In addition, it is easy to spread germs and communicable diseases, like COVID-19 because we are face to face.
The fact that this was a small tour led us to believe that it would be a more comfortable trip… it was not!
Anna was an excellent driver but did not have the equipment necessary to be an adequate guide. She should have had a headset or some device in the vehicle to communication with us while driving. Most times, we could not hear anything that she was saying and when I asked a question, I had to twist myself around (sitting backwards) and ask in an elevated voice. I’ve had better tours using Viator… what has happened?
Anna could have been more helpful with recommendations once we got to Positano; specific places to seek out for goods, food, restrooms, etc.
We found the lunch at the farm marginal. Lots of baked pasta seasoned with too much salt. A salad option would have been nice & healthier. The restaurant was in an idyllic setting, so we enjoyed the setting more than the food. It was nice to spend the afternoon in Pompeii because by then, most of the crowds had gone.
Overall the tour was good but for the price point, we believe that it could have been better because we’ve had better experiences with you in the past.
Response from Host, Jun 2023
Dear Client,
Thank you for sharing your point of view.
This is one of the last Mercedes Vito models for sightseeing and therefore I'm quite surprised by your comment as many clients have so far appreciated this type of minivan , which offers actually more confort that a regular 8 pax minivan. In the Amalfi coat and specifically in Positano, only with small minivans it is possible to make all teh way down to the vilage.
In regards to covid , I would always wear a mask anyhow in any closed area where there are people I don't know. I asked a full report from our local coordinator and he advised me that in fact that day the mike did not work and that Anna asked if everybody could hear her properly.
As for lunch, generally clients enjoy both the setting and lunch – perhaps that day they made a so called “ timballo di pasta “ dish, which is a typical italian dish, and it would probably have been better just a pasta dish with fresh tomato sauce. Very rarely clients are unhappy about the food – certainly all appreciate, the same as you did, the enchanting setting.
I’m glad you’ve overall enjoyed the experience and appreciated seeing Pompeii in the afternoon when big crowds have left.
Kind Regards
Monica
