I booked because i was taking my five year old to a park and i wanted to make it more interesting. This was perfect bc you can do how much or how little you want. It’s also more fun than searching for specific things! Tara was super hands on and fun too
Response from Host, Apr 2026
Thanks for being open to a new experience!

Tara was super super sweet and nice. The issue was the actual hunt. It's not a scavenger hunt; it's more of a list of challenges / things to find.
After 5 minutes I asked myself why I need to do a $160 where's Waldo. We just explored the park ourselves.
I didn't ask for a refund as Tara was very nice.
A scavenger hunt is typically a string of clues, where one clue leads you to the next, and it builds on eachother. Clue #2 provides the info for you to find clue #3 and so on.
This was a list of things to find and a few challenges, like "do something nice for a stranger".
CHAT gpt has this for free.
Response from Host, Jan 2025
It is true this is not a traditional scavenger hunt, which I clarify on my listing. It will only be a good value if you choose to do the missions, as this guest did not. Chat GPT does not have my hunt for free. I am more than happy to answer any questions or discuss with you after booking by phone, and if it doesnt feel right for any reason you have until 24 hours before the game to cancel for a full refund. I, too, wish to host the people who are a right fit for this unusual, dynamic, creative and fun game.

We had an absolutely fabulous time doing the scavenger hunt is a family. The day before we went on to small hikes with our 4 kids and they complained to the whole time. On the day of the scavenger hunt they were engaged for the full 2 hours that we were there and we all thought it was a highlight of her trip. I cannot recommend it enough.
Response from Host, Dec 2024
You were a fun family!

Waste of $$$. Had 2 little kids and tried to do a fun event at Joshua tree. Host would not offer a refund even though we did not use a single piece of the provided “scavenger hunt”. Would NOT recommend.
Response from Host, Aug 2024
Its always unfortunate when guests do not read the listing or follow directions. This is a collaborative immersive game that requires guest participation to a huge degree. Its not a sit on the back of the bus event where you wait for it to happen.
In the case of this group, when they messaged me they thought it was a private tour of Joshua Tree, I told them it was not and offered a refund at that time. They declined. They were picking up a rv that day after flying in from overseas, so being busy they skipped the pregame info on whats app, skipped the team name and photo( an important building block) and most of their team skipped the powwow explaining how the game worked.
if you approach the game this way it is very likely you will have the same result. They also choose a mid day at 105 degrees, which i contacted them about on booking and advised against,.
if you approach it like many of my other hunters, by doing the team name and photo, doing the powwow in a quiet place where everyone can hear and taking a leap of faith to do this playful and light hearted game, your results will be good. You are the magic part of this game. If people are grumpy or in a bad mood it is true my game will not be able to fix that.
Ps. i do call guests upon booking so feel free to ask me any questions and i can address any concerns. you can always cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours prior to tbe booking date and time.

Probably one of the worst viator trips we've ever had couldn't even found the first clue and all the audio and videos we were supposed to take seemed ridiculous.
We spent too much time trying to do the rules then having a good time

it is true this hunt is not a fit for everyone.. it is great for people who like to try something new, have an open mind, be creative, talk to new people and learn new things.
Future hunters I wish for your game to be highly successful, as I know you do ,so please ask yourself these questions before booking:
1.Am I really open to something new and different?( this truly isn't like any game you have played before).
2. Do I know I am booking a remotely hosted scavenger hunt and not an in person guided tour?( for some reason a number of people book this thinking it is a guided tour and if you do so its true you will not be happy)
3. Is my group up for light hearted fun? The missions are fun and creative and not a fit for those in a very serious frame of mind or mood.
4. Is my group willing to play full on? This is important to get the best VALUE out of the experience.. if you don't actually do the missions you will not get a good value out of the hunt.
5. Am I all in to send a fun and creative team photo and team name? In thousands of hunts in 18 locations no team who has passed on sending a team name and photo( like this reviewer) has EVER done well..if it sounds like something you wouldn't like to do, you wont like the rest of the hunt either.
5. Am I willing for the team leaders to get in touch on Whats App the day before?( this is important for pregame info and cannot be skipped)
As you can see many have had a vastly different experience than this reviewer and I want the very best experience for my hunters. Please feel free to either reach out with any questions or concerns before booking.

This was one of the best scavenger hunts we have been on. Tara called the day of and walked us through the hunt. This hunt did not use GPS, and there was no actual "treasure" to find and no treasure map, but we found gold with this hunt. The one mile loop had fun twists and turns and the hunt for clues was challenging enough to be fun, but not so challenging that it was frustrating. We had a lot of fun and met some interesting people along the way. I highly recommend this hunt to everyone. Try something new with your family. It is a lot of fun.

We did the scavenger hunt with our 2 kids (8 and 3 years old) and had so much fun!
It’s a great activity to do as a family, it keeps the kids entertained and it is a fun way to discover Joshua Tree National Park.
We highly recommend!

Thank you so much for the great review! I consider this a collaborative experience between me- the game designer and host ,Joshua Tree itself and you the hunters. You are the gas that drives the engine, so thanks very much for playing full on.. Guests who do this will get the best value out of this experience.

We had a terrific time as a family on this adventure! Our little crew of 7 (ages 5 to 42) broke into two “teams” and each hunted for the clues separately. Our big kids (11 and 13) had the best time! Our 8 year old enjoyed it too, although she couldn’t move as fast with the reading/interpreting of the clues, and our little guys (age 5) just liked being silly! Tara was incredibly engaged!!! She sent us all the details and did a live briefing with us beforehand, and then we did the hunt on our own since there’s no reception in the park. Then she was terrific as we “submitted” our answers… so much encouragement and back-and-forth. It was a really neat experience… much better than just randomly hiking through the park. So glad we did it! It really made our whole family trip super unique.

Thank you for this kind review and playing the game full on! I fully agree its the best, in fact only way to get the most value out of your adventure.

The trail and beauty of the park was everything. Disappointed it turned out to be self guided with a remote coordinator. You should make that clear in the beginning before you take our money.
Response from Host, Jan 2024
I am sorry to hear you felt my listing was misleading. I do remotely host my scavenger hunts.I do not know any scavenger hunt host in the business who goes with you on the hunt. It is true this is not a guided tour but a scavenger hunt.I had thought your group did great with the clues so was also sorry and surprised to see this review.

The scavenger hunt was an outstanding option for our group of 5, included both kids and adults. I was looking for an outdoor adventure that was interesting, unique, and budget friendly. The host, Tara, was enthusiastic and made the hunt for us. Her story telling skills and passion for the hunt got us excited and we fully committed to the creative adventure. I highly recommend!
Response from Host, Nov 2022
Aw! I loved hosting your creative and fun family! Thank you for the opportunity and i hope to host you again for a rematch in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Hawaii or New Orleans!
Chris_F, Mar 2021
What a wonderful way to experience Joshua Tree! This hunt made us hyper-aware of our surroundings & allowed us to take in the park in a way we'd have never done on our own. Tara was a wonderful virtual guide and kept challenging us to push ourselves. It was very fun and a unique experience!
Response from Host, Mar 2021
Joshua Tree is such a magical and amazing place. It was a real honor to curate your adventure there. Thank you for giving my unconventional and unusual hunt a try! Hope to host you for a rematch in Sedona, Grand Canyon, Jerome, Tucson, Santa Fe, Taos, Kona, Kauai or the Volcanos Park.
