Itinerary

Choose your preferred start time (subject to availability), and meet your private guide at the corner of 6th Avenue and Waverly Place in the center of Greenwich Village. Begin with an overview the neighborhood's origins as a bucolic farming community, and stroll by historic landmarks including the house where Edgar Allan Poe once lived and the Brown Building, site of the tragic 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire that led to major changes in American labor rights.

Make your way to Washington Square Park, a green oasis in the city that evolved from a quiet potter’s field into a bohemian gathering place for artists, students, and protesters. Walk up lively McDougal Street, where countless artists and entertainers have left their mark. Pass by Cafe Wha, where musicians from Jimi Hendrix to Bruch Springsteen have graced the stage, and The Comedy Cellar, a popular performing spot for top laugh-makers like Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K., and Amy Schumer. Test your pop culture savviness on Jones Street, which inspired the cover art for Bob Dylan’s Freewheelin’ album. You’ll also get tips on the local foodie scene as you pass Cafe Reggio, known for its cappuccino, and what some consider the best pizza joint in New York.

After turning down Christopher Street, see another protest landmark at the Stonewall Inn, site of the 1969 riots that helped spark the American gay rights movement. Cross over into the neighboring West Village, passing the famous Friends apartment and other unique homes, including Manhattan’s one-time tiniest piece of private property. Throughout the 2-hour tour, take advantage of your guide’s expertise and personalized attention to get to know the heart and soul of Greenwich Village.

Katherine_M, Nov 2025
My tour with Joel was really special. I learned a lot about the history of Greenwich Village. Joel was a wonderful guide. My whole family said it was the best experience we had this weekend.

Connor was grea, vast knowledge, funny many interesting sites like Washington Park , Hotel, Café Wha, Reggio, Anderson Cooper’s house, place where Taylor Swift lived, old prison now library, gay places of interest and where riots started, Joe’s slice of pizza, etc. and many interesting people who lived and played there.

Percy and Viator know Greenwich Village!

Cheryl_C, May 2023
We had an excellent tour with Percy who was so incredibly knowledgeable about Greenwich Village. One member of our party lives in Manhattan but claims she learned a ton about the area. Percy knew the answers to everything we asked and was able to tell us a ton about the literary figures of the area as well. We highly recommend.

Wonderful tour

What a great tour! History, architecture, and more. Christine was a skilled guide and was such a pleasure to be with. She easily accommodated our physical limitations. Much appreciated!

Great Tour of Greenwich Village

I have lived in Greenwich Village since 1997 and still learned so many interesting things about the area. The tour guide was well spoken, friendly and engaging.

Top notch ghost & local history tour!

Sloop29, Jul 2019
This private tour for me and my 14 y.o. daughter was a highlight of our 4 day trip to NYC. Excellent communication and confirmation of booking details etc. put my mind at ease. We have a tradition of taking ghost/haunted tours in each city we visit, this one did not disappoint and we’re very grateful to our guide Joel. All the must-haves are here- solid local historical knowledge, interesting sites in themselves beyond the ghostly narratives, and spooky yet inspiring tales of long departed (plus a few more recent) souls. Joel’s true gifts for storytelling and his passion for the neighborhood made this quite special for us, and in the end we have some poignant stories to treasure. Very nicely done. Treat yourself to a tour with Joel, I’m glad we were able to.
