Itinerary

Meet a driver/guide at your hotel in Lisbon for 9am departure, then begin the 18-mile (30-km) trip to Sintra, a town set high in the Serra de Sintra hills.

Upon arrival in Sintra, set out on foot to discover the town, walking with your guide to the Moorish castle that dominates the UNESCO-listed historic center. You’ll see walls that date to the 8th and 9th centuries, and find fabulous views of the hilly landscape.

The next stop is Quinta da Regaleira, a palace with secret tunnels, mazes, and fascinating riddles and symbols that evoke everything from the ancient Greeks to the Knights Templar. You’ll dine in the palace’s restaurant, a cluster of marble tables in palace courtyard.

Following the palace, meal, continue to the town of Colares for a tasting of the region’s distinctive wines, then keep driving to Cabo da Roca, the most westerly place in continental Europe. Walk along the cliff tops for great views of the sea, looking out over the towns of Estoril and Cascais, head to the beach, then explore Cascais on foot—it’s a onetime fishing village that’s now an elegant vacation town.

This full-day tour concludes with drop-off at your Lisbon hotel.

Jose was THE BEST! We had a full day, and it was wonderful! Jose is so knowledgeable about many subjects, and his commentary made our excursion even better. He went above and beyond, making dinner reservations for us and dropping us at the restaurant. He even took our purchases of the day back to our hotel after he dropped us off, so we wouldn't have to carry them into the restaurant. We all agreed that we had never had such a fun and full excursion!

We had such a great time! Even though the weather wasn’t the best, this trip was totally worth it. Our driver, Jose, knew exactly how to make sure our day was spent exploring the area in the best way possible even though it was raining quite a bit and we were unable to visit Pena Palace because of the business strikes currently happening. He was very knowledgeable of the area and very passionate. Bring proper walking shoes and a light jacket to prepare for any type of climate.

We really wanted a tour that included Sintra, Peña Palace, Cabo de Roca and Quinta de Regaleira. Our tour guide, Fernando was fantastic and flexible in taking us to see what we wanted to see. He did a great job explaining the Masonic rituals at Quinta de Regaleira and kept us laughing the whole time. Lunch at the Regaleira is prefixed, with many different menu combinations that you choose before hand and was great. We skipped the wine tasting, Estoril and Cascais, so we could spend more time at the spectacular Peña Palace.

This was a fantastic trip. Our driver/guide was JOSE. He was not just a driver guide but an entire encyclopedia on the area and the history of Portugal. It was a trip that took us to small towns, wonderful gardens and the ocean shore. A trip that was well worth the cost. If you go on this trip ask for JOSE.

Our guide Paolo from Lisbon on Wheels was awesome! He spent the whole day with us, taking us all over, not just to Sintra, but to the coastline, a vineyard for a tasting, and a couple of other small towns. He was extremely knowledgeable and was a delight to spend the day with. Highly recommend this tour - some are more busrides than guided tours, this was definitely the latter.

Jose was our guide for this incredible day. He happily accommodated all of our requests all day, taking us to a few spots that were breathtaking and interesting outside just the stated destinations. We'd highly recommend it to anyone looking to see the countryside and coast just outside of Lisbon, particularly if Jose is taking you. He's knowledgeable and incredibly kind. 5 stars!

This tour was not as advertised. The air conditioner in the van did not work and it was a very hot day. It was at least 95 degrees fereinheight that day. Traveling in the van was miserable. Also the front window was broken so the driver could not accompany us to any sites. He basically parked his van, told us where to go and waited for us to come back to the van because he could not leave it. It would have been nice to have a local with us to explain the sites and take photos of our foursome. We did many tours while on this vacation and this was the worst. We did get to see a lot of things, but we would have gotten to see the same on another tour. The sites we saw were amazing. Don't miss Regaleiria and the Moorish castle. He didn't take us to the castle so we went back on our own the next day.
