My husband and I had an absolutely amazing time on our tour with Celia, and we would highly recommend it to anyone who likes good food, history, and culture! Celia is an amazing storyteller and did a great job sharing the fascinating history of Portugal with today's culture and food. We had a ton of great food to try as well as drinks and such. The group was small and it still felt very personal while being fun. We visited a good mix of both popular and off the beaten path spots. We highly recommend this tour!

One of the best food tours I’ve ever taken! So informative, engaging and the food was amazing. Well worth it.
Karen_H, Oct 2025
It is worth the money. Make this tour your main priority for the day. Do not eat within a few hours beforehand. I learned so much about the history of Portugal and its influence on other regions of the world and local cuisine. I came away with a greater understanding of the history and its significance in the world. Our guide was a former teacher, Kika, who was an intriguing and interesting guide. The time passed effortlessly as we were all intrigued with her knowledge and passion.
My friends who came with me gave a 5 star plus a sticker (because she was a kindergarten teacher).

This was probably one of the best food tours I’ve ever been on! Small group and went to some places that are off the tourist track. Ines give lots of information on Portugal/Lisbon history and culture. Word of advice though don’t eat anything before you come on this tour because you have a lot of good food to try.

Great Experience with Laura, very educational and eye opening journey through Portuguese history and culture. Met in a beautiful park and enjoyed a wonderful espresso and banana bread. Then ventured off to a family restaurant that served authentic Portuguese cuisine. Laura was a delightful conversationalist with everyone. The food was wonderful but the company was even better.

The walk was easy. I’m old and have bad knees. Arrive early so you can visit the cathedral directly across the park gate meeting point. The food was traditional. Griselda was kind and inclusive. She shared a lot of knowledge on the food history of Portugal. The group was small. We had a very good time.

We had SUCH a fantastic Food Tour with Laura, it one of the best tours we’ve ever taken anywhere. It is well worth the price. Our guide was so knowledgeable, friendly and fun and she made our experience enjoyable. You will try great wines, snacks, meet locals and go to off the beaten path but popular restaurants. This tour gave us the most local and authentic feeling experience we had in all of our time in Lisbon.
Laura took time to teach us about the history of the food culture which helped to connect us to the country and gave us a great reason to come back to Portugal to go deeper. Based on this we will plan to do this company’s tours in any other city that we go to that has them! Truly, no better way to eat and experience life like a local.

If you are going to be in Lisbon for any time at all - and if you enjoy good food, good wine and good company, this tour is a must. Take it early in your stay, as you will learn a lot about the local food community and cuisine that will set you up for the rest of your stay.
Ines was a fantastic guide, host and historian. A native of Lisboa, she grew up in the area the tour operates in and has an astounding depth and breadth of knowledge about Portugal, past and present.
Don't eat a big breakfast before arriving. We stopped at no less than 8 places before the lunch wrapped up.
Thank you. Ines, for a wonderful day. It was truly memorable and remarkable.

Gisela, our guide was amazing! We met her in front of the park gates at 10 am exactly and went to the first restaurant, for “first breakfast. There she explained to us the culinary journey we were about to embark on, which reflects the role of Portugal in exploring and discovering the world. Throughout the day we sampled coffee, wines, spirits, and many types of Portuguese cuisine reflecting different world influences and local customs. Gisela was warm and funny and made the day really fun. One of the highlights was Mercado de Campo de Ourique where we explored multiple stalls and met Fred who gave us some delicious samples and where we bought some fun snacks to take home!

Gusela is cheerful, friendly, engaging and smart. Our assignment was to draw a map of the world while she went off to get everyone coffee/tea/water. This became the template for a day filled with food history, Portuguese exploration and colonizing, favorite neighborhood haunts and restaurants you won’t find on your own or in any guidebook. All my food jaunts with Culinary Crossroads have been top notch, and if you get Gusela as your guide in Lisbon, you are in for a treat (or two…or three…). Do it.

This was an absolutely fabulous introduction not only to Portuguese cuisine but to Portuguese history and culture as well. Our guide, Kika, was an incredible teacher (actually a former teacher). She packed an amazing amount of information - and food - into our time together and did so while keeping up just the right pace and making it lots of fun. We were a group of 3 couples, and Kika took us around a part of Lisbon that was not mentioned in my guidebooks, so we got to see something we wouldn't have found on our own. All the foods were delicious, and we ate and learned about everything from fish to meat to wine to coffee to sweets and learned about the influence of spices and foods from former Portuguese colonies. I really cannot say enough about this tour and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone new to Portugal. It's especially helpful to do this early on during your stay in Portugal, but if you can't, I would say even do it on your last day - it is just THAT worthwhile and special. We are going to look for more Culinary Backstreets tours on future travels. This was truly a highlight of our wonderful one-week stay in Portugal. Many thanks, Kika, for such a great experience! We loved the different foods and learned so much about Portugal from you!

Laura was our host/guide and she has amazing knowledge of the history of Lisbon as well as the food and drinks we enjoyed. Nice mix of sweet at the beginning to savoury at the end. For one of us fish was not a preference and an additional plate outside of the planned menu was added for all of us to enjoy.

Kiki, our guide, was the best part of our tour. She expertly wove in the history of Portugal along with the contributions and trade that have influenced food around the world - literally- and the modern day food scene. She chose local foods representing traditional Portuguese dishes and influences from the former colonies. It was always interesting, delicious and fun. The 5 hours absolutely flew by. Her love of her neighborhood, her country and its culinary traditions was profound as was her knowledge of history. We cannot recommend her highly enough. She has a real gift for explaining things in an entertaining, engaging and personal way.
