A delicious history lesson through Tucson's food scene with James Beard Award Winning Chef

      Beth_E, Jun 2026
We did this walking tour last Saturday and had a fantastic time. We learned that Tucson was the first city in America to be named a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and this tour really shows you why — it's a walk through the Southwest fusion of flavors that earned that designation, with each stop paired with the history and lore behind it. You eat well and you come away knowing a lot more about the history of the people and place you're exploring. The Sonoran hot dog and the elote pizza were standout highlights, and we ended on the perfect note with a palate-cleansing stop at The Screamery. This was our second tour with Carolyn, and she's the reason we'll keep coming back. She's a James Beard award winning chef and a wonderful storyteller. She's deeply knowledgeable about both Tucson's history and its food and beverage scene. Carolyn packs a serious history tour in alongside the food, so it's an explosion of flavors and colorful stories all at once. You won't go away hungry, and you'll leave a little smarter too. We highly recommend any tour Carolyn is offering — five stars. (Pro tip: don't overeat at the first stop -- there's a lot more food to come!)

A Perfect Blend of Food, History, and Culture

This was one of the highlights of our visit to Tucson. Our guide, Carolyn, a James Beard Award-winning chef, shared fascinating insights into the city's food scene, history, culture, and Indigenous culinary traditions. Each of the five stops offered something unique, from a classic Sonoran hot dog to amazing local ice cream. The food was delicious, and the knowledge and enthusiasm of our guide made the tour exceptional. Highly recommended!

      great food tour

It can be hot under the AZ sun, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water are necessary. The guide is a chef and knows her way around the Tucson foodie scene and is passionate both about the food and Tucson history. I had not expected the history portion of the tour so that was a delight. I also liked that the guide made a distinction between facts with footnotes and unsubstantiated but plausible parts.

Our family of four had a great time learning about the history of Tucson and sampling great food as we strolled through the beautiful artsy city of Tucson with Caroline as our professional chef guide.
