Signed up for English small group - got Italian large group. :-(

Signed up for English small-group tour. While our Viator guide was excellent, a major portion of the tour was the underground of the Colosseum- that 60 minute portion had to be lead by a Colosseum guide who spoke in Italian - and that group was 20-24 people. Our English speaking guide was not allowed to translate during underground tour. Should have just saved the $$$ and bought underground tickets ourselves.

Dear Gino, Thank you for taking the time to leave us valuable feedback about your experience with us. The Colosseum's new regulations dictate that all Underground Colosseum tours must be accompanied by an official Colosseum chaperone, who is usually Italian. This chaperone's duty is to ensure the safety of the Colosseum (which is still an active archaelogical site). While in the Underground, our guides are not allowed to speak. So, they provide out clients with all the relevant information beforehand and after, allowing them to enjoy the beautiful sites and take pictures while below ground. During the 34 - 40 minutes you were in the Underground, we can assure you that you were not apart of another tour group, simply following the Colosseum chaperone. We'd also like to kindly remind you that the rest of your tour was a semi-private group consisting solely of you, your guide, and the other couple on your tour. We have tried our best to get around these restrictions, but unfortunately the Colosseum administration is very clear about its rules concerning Underground visitors. Thank you, again, for reaching out to let us know your honest thoughts about your tour. We hope you still enjoyed your time in the Colosseum and had a wonderful rest of your trip. Exploring the underground of the Coliseum was a highlight of our trip. Our guide was excellent. She was well versed in the history of Rome and of the building. The small tour size, only 5 people, was a nice break from the usual crowds. The underground tour is not crowded and well worth the extra cost.

Confirm Meeting Locations

We were given 3 different meeting point addresses from Viator including an “update” the morning of the excursion. Unfortunately all of these locations were incorrect. We tried to call Viator and the tour operator repeatedly but, no one answered. Finally a volunteer used their personal cell phone to call and got in touch with the tour operator. We are assuming they did not answer our call because our phones did not show an Italian location. The whole ordeal resulted in our small group tour starting late. Once the tour started it was difficult to hear as our guide did not use a headset and it was crowded and noisy. The guide was knowledgeable and we thoroughly enjoyed our excursion. Make sure you arrive early and expect confusion.

On the day of your tour, the owner of our company, Salvatore, was waiting for you at the meeting point and promptly brought you to your group. We do apologize that you struggled to find your group, but we can assure you that we were working to find you and make sure you could still attend your tour - which you did with very little delay. Unfortunately, there is little we can do to control the crowds and noise in the Colosseum and we rarely use headsets since our group sizes are so small. Thank you for your honest feedback.
