Sandra was our driver and guide. She was perfect for us! The private tour to The Algarve from Lisbon was wonderful! So accommodating and the views were amazing! Everything was perfect.

Vasco was a great tour guide. He adapted the tour to suit us. Beautiful waters and towns. Pur only challenge was the bus AC that had challenges with the heat. Vasco did everything he could to make us comfortable. The scenery and him as made our trip!

TOUR DATE APRIL 3rd 2024 (What to expect, as seen online, at end of review)
We booked this tour with Viator, knowing that our time in Portugal was limited and we hoped to see as much as possible in the Algarve region, in one day. We were underwhelmed and disappointed in the tour we experienced!!
Start time 08.30 AM
- We were picked up, as advertised, at 8:30 am at our hotel in Lisbon,
“Get picked up at your hotel or the address of your choosing in Lisbon and set out on a culture- and history-focused sightseeing tour.”
- When we began our drive, we informed our driver/guide that we were interested in the history of the country and that we hoped to see several towns, and sights.
- Our guide, Rod, did not provide any significant degree of historical narrative on the long drive to the Algarve region, but he was very chatty and we did find out just about everything of his private life (ex-wife, daughters, girl friends, pets, other tours he does, etc…) He also mentioned that he was there to help out his boss because no one else was available to do the tour so he did the trip even though it was to have been a rare day off for him and he would only have Sunday before undertaking a 25 day trip. It was hard to tell if he was reluctant to do the trip, as it infringed on his planned day off, or pleased that he had been asked.
“Visit top places in the Algarve including”: The description noted two “drive bys” and 5 places in the description above.
- We did not see Vasco da Gama Bridge, Praia da Rocha Beach, the town of Sagres (except to drive by it on the highway) or Cape St, Vincent. We did see Sagres Fortress and Lagos and 25 Abril Bridge. Therefore, we saw one of two drive-by sights and two of five listed visit places.
“What To Expect… Private guided visits inside monuments are included:”
Sagres Fortress:
- We were dropped off outside the Fortress at Sagres and left alone to visit this monument for 30 minutes. We were not given the history or importance of the fortress, other than to say that Henry the Navigator had been there. We did learn some of the history by reading the information boards provided within the fortress. We certainly did not have a guided tour!
Lagos:
- We did stop in Lagos – for two hours instead of one.
- We were dropped off at the fish market to look around, on our own, and to find a restaurant for lunch.
- We have since learned that, historically, Lagos was an important hub of the slave trade, and has a Slave Market, which can still be seen. There are also 2 churches which are worth a visit, as well as the castle and fort. Our guide did not mention any of these historic sites, as a result, we did not see them as he went off for two hours and picked us up at the appointed time.
Vasca do Gama Bridge, Praia da Rocha, Sagres town, Cape St. Vincent:
- We never saw the Vasc do Gama bridge nor visited the other three sites. The latter two were just mentioned in passing as we drove by Sagres en route to Lagos.
Summary:
The value for the price paid was very poor. We are very experienced international travelers and while Rod was pleasant enough as an individual and a good driver, he did not stack up as a guide nor did he show us what we had expected to see.
We were basically transported around in the Mercedes (NO WiFi that I was able to detect) from Lisbon to Sagres Fortress to Lagos centre town and its Boardwalk on the western side of Lagos (to see the coastline), then back to Lisbon.
We totally missed four of the 7 points of interest that we had expected to see. We do not recommend this tour and expect a refund equivalent to 50% of the cost.
What To Expect - as noted on,ine
