What To Expect
The New England Aquarium is one of the premier visitor attractions in Boston with over 22,000 members and 1.3 million visitors each year.
Start on the front plaza, where a slice of New England rocky coast and 42,000 gallons of water are home to resident harbor seals. Look for a massive globe, featuring the oceans, continents, and animals that call this blue planet home.
Step inside that New England Aquarium with priority admission, where informative and entertaining live animal presentations happen every day, allowing visitors to see their favorite aquatic animals. Watch seals interact with their trainers. See turtles eat right from the hands of divers, including Myrtle, a 550-pound green sea turtle, who has been living at the Aquarium for more than 40 years.
“Sea” it all: sea turtles, sea stars, sea urchins, sea lions, and sea dragons, not to mention snails, hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, shorebirds, lobsters, goosefish, octopus, piranhas, anacondas, salmon, and many more.
Like penguins? The New England Aquarium’s penguin exhibit is home to more than 50 of them — African penguins, Northern and Southern rockhopper penguins, even little blue penguins.
Then there are tanks. The largest “tank” on the East Coast features more than 100 animals, including cownose rays, Atlantic Rays, and sharks, and the centerpiece exhibit, a cylindrical 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank featuring turtles, sharks, eels, stingrays, tarpon and many more, including colorful tropical fishes.

My kid loved it! Make sure to grab a scavenger hunt on the way in! Try seeing a live show it was a highlight for the kids! And the California sea lions are not to be missed!

My family and I had a wonderful time. I loved the layout...and the giftshop was affordable! Wish we could have seen some dolphins :(

Our favorite part was the seal exhibit but it was a little disappointing that the interior of the glass was so dirty you couldn’t really see or take pictures. Still, we love seals!
The inside was smaller than expected and very crowded. Strollers everywhere making it hard to navigate the walkways. But that was because people parked their strollers in the middle of the path while they walked up to the tanks.

Packed with gross people who have no caring for their surroundings and will change their kids on a bench in front of everyone

Incredibly crowded and disappointing. Been to a lot of aquariums and this one sadly ranks last. Mostly fish and screaming tourists with very little big attractions

A bit of false advertising here. We we looking forward to seeing the sharks but there was none..so we just enjoyed what was on offer.

Everything was great the exhibits were incredible. The only con is its a very busy place we we felt very rushed.
Brian_S, Nov 2025
Kids loved the giant tank in the middle but started to lose a little interest beyond that so the visit was cut a bit short
Marianne_M, Nov 2025
Easy pace, never rushed, great signage for information, fun to touch a stingray. Very clean, and the turtles, so graceful!

Wonderful penguin exhibit! Loved the tiered spiral walkways, lots of viewing space. Would recommend visiting

My daughter and I had a fantastic experience from start to finish. We were greeted by the playful harbour seals in their enclosure at the entrance. But the moment we walked in, we were mesmerised by the Penguin colony. The design of the aquarium is brilliant for all age groups and displays a variety of beautiful marine life, colourful fishes and graceful rays. The highlight of our trip was the Touch Tank where we got to touch the passing sharks and stingrays. We had a great time and would definitely recommend a visit for anyone visiting Boston.

I loved the aquarium but I did find it a bit smaller than I had expected it to be. The gift shop is quite expensive as well. But purchasing through Viator was a great experience and I will always check with Viator for future excursions when I'm cruising.

It was very packed and very small for the price. We had a child with us and the large crowds plus small aquarium made it difficult. I would recommend to NOT bring your children especially for the price we paid.

The New England Aquarium has the space and the location to be fantastic. Instead it felt like a stroll through a giant fish tank. Thank goodness for the sea lions pacing in their small pool and the catatonic penguins.

My kid had a lot of fun its was her first time there and she could not be any happier. Thank you for the amazing experience
Tony_M, Oct 2025
My partner and I were looking for something fun to do on a Saturday afternoon and decided to check out the aquarium! Super easy to book and same day! I loved the penguins.

There is a LOT to see at the New England Aquarium! Four levels of fascinating exhibits surrounding a giant ocean tank with hundreds of fish and other sea life. Divers regularly go into the tank to feed the fish. Penguins, sharks, seals and sea lions round out the offerings, plus a very friendly staff who are eager to explain anything. The exhibits all have helpful photos to identify what's in the tanks. There's also a nice cafe with a beautiful view of Boston Harbor. This is a great activity for families, but solos and couples of all ages were having a good time, too. And this was all on a weekday! Get there early to avoid the ticket line - or better yet, book it in advance on Viator! And don't forget to pace yourself.

One of the coolest aquariums I’ve been too. Very
Creatively put together and the staff are amazing! I love how interactive they are with guests, especially the littles.

It was a great aquarium. The set up was easy to follow and the exhibits were well done. The outside area was very nice.
Kenny_D, Sep 2025
Great family environment, fun and informative for all age group’s or a sea lovers dream with tons of exhibits
Marie_C, Sep 2025
This is a great place to visit. All age groups will love all the interactions. Not too big and not to small.
Meghan_G, Sep 2025
Amazing! A lot of kids running around but just be prepared! We didn’t mind the kids and we thought it was adorable :) Even just me and my partner loved it!
Scott_A, Sep 2025
Great experience and well worth price of admission! Will definitely go back if ever in Boston. Animals were amazing!

I went on a Saturday and their was a line to the sidewalk when we went to the Desk, we were told we would have to purchase online or wait in line and that they were soon to be at capacity if they were at capacity we would have to wait for the time on our ticket. We purchased online and and paid an extra $20 than the posted price. And the aquarium was extremely crowded and seemed to already be over capacity. It was horrible
Pauline_B, Sep 2025
It was such a good time
Great for little ones. Alot to see like penguins, different kinds of fish, sharks. Even get to touch sting rays. It was awesome.
Kim_G, Aug 2025
The aquarium is well worth the visit. Easy to navigate. Beautiful colors & pictures came great. A nice family outing.
Meredith_L, Aug 2025
Interactive and engaging. We love an aquarium, and learned something new with each turn. The giant turtles captured our hearts immediately.
Shabd_K, Aug 2025
Weekend attendance comes with tons of children. For folks with disabilities, this visit might be better during the weekdays and earlier in the day. This was a great place to visit, very informative!
Aaron_C, Aug 2025
Extremely crowded and was surprisingly small. It was also very warm inside of the aquarium, but that didn't bother me as much as the crowds.
Elena_W, Aug 2025
Animals were well looked after, there are lots of different species of fish to see, my favourites were the penguins and sea lions, i would definitely recommend to go and take the kids
