Once
We received our actual tickets at the ticket booth for the Alcatraz and the Bay cruise, the experience for both tours was great. The emails I received all stated I would receive the tickets prior to departure. I never received the bar code for the tickets. Unfortunately, the staff that manage the entrance at the start of the line are not very knowledgeable and don’t have the patience to listen. I tried to explain and not one but two employees kept moving me to the next line. I ended up going to the tocket booth. The line was long. I called the number in the confirmation email I received after I booked. Unfortunately the employee I spoke to had a difficult time understanding my name spelling, my email and after several time spelling both out; he committed to send the bar code and tickets out. I never received either. The staff person at the ticket booth was very friendly and helpful. They helped me out and immediately found my reservation and printed my tickets. Luckily we arrived very early and averted a missed tour to Alcatraz. When arriving to the prison tour, we were greeted by the abundance of the flies. Based on the National Park Ranger, this was the fly nesting season. The flies were everywhere. You could not escape their wrath. I would recommend notifying tourists to prepare for the pesky flies; they were that annoying. I would say there were thousands of them!! I would never come back for this tour during the fly nesting season- it was that traumatic.
It was a great tour and the audio tour made you feel like you were actually there experiencing what happened. Very well done
It was good and organized, wish we got closer to the golden gate bridge , you could see it but not get close
A neat experience would highly recommend. Evening boat ride was cold dress appropriately, learned alot.
There was no Golden Gate tour even though we paid for it. The timing of the tour you pay for is irrelevant: You’re dropped off at the island and you can catch a ferry back, or not, every thirty minutes thereafter. So, if you pay for the expensive four hour tour, your experience is no different than someone who pays for the two hour tour because the folks who pay for the two hour tour have the same ability to wander around the island for an additional two hours as you do.
I have long been fascinated by Alcatraz and the self guided tour was everything I could have wanted. The park rangers, staff
and book store staff were terrific.
Thank you, Maryanne
Over booked could barely look at any of the cells and stuff, not that much to actually see. Don’t recommend!
Alcatraz was a phenomenal experience. We found it to be so informative. The only the I would have recommended is that fewer people be allowed to start the tour at the same time. Some of the guests were pushy and hogged the viewing sites of the cells, etc. It would have been much nicer not to have so many patrons pushing and shoving.
The Bay Cruise was also wonderful. My only recommendation is that the PA was not loud enough to hear. My travel team really wanted to hear the facts but could not at all.
Alcatraz Prison is a world wide success in capturing the attention of the public. Trips are sold out year long to get a glimpse of a prison closed in the early 60’s. This glimpse of American history is a “must see” for all history buffs.
I had reservations but had a family emergency. I couldn’t call due to my current situation. A day later I tried to call to get my reservation for another day and he wouldn’t help. Says to bad. So forget this company. Be aware all they care about is money not the experience.
Great experience. Learned a lot. Enjoyed the ride through the bay, the tour, and gardens. Well worth seeing.
A bit confusing but that might be me this is run by 2 different tour operators one on pier 33 the other on 39 only a short walk between the 2 to be fair.
Overall very good Alcatraz very much self guided and the Bay cruise commentary is very informative and you see a couple of sides of the golden gate bridge close up that are hard to see from land.
We tried to change the date on the tour three days before it occurred due to a family emergency. The vendor would not allow it. We told them we could try again the following week but they said no and kept the payment. Terrible customer service
The tour guides were very friendly and helpful. We were given a lift up in the electric cart to the cell block
Very informative trip on a beautiful sunny day
I would recommend this to anyone visiting this area
Everyone was extremely friendly
Excellent tour I learned history about Alcatraz I did not know. Boat ride was great, took many pictures. The views of the cities were fantastic!
Wonderful tour! The audio tour was clear and very detailed. The go at your own pace is a definite bonus! You have the ability to stay as long or as little as you like, the boats to take you back to San Francisco are available fairly quickly! It’s windy!! Bring a jacket! Make sure you allow plenty of time to walk through the garden and do a little bird watching!!
Very nice and great paced tour. The only thing that I would like to see is more information on the other inmates that were incarcerated, example: James "Whitey" Bulger and Clarence Carnes the youngest inmate on Alcatraz.
Very interesting history. Audio tour of the cell house was full of details that I never knew. The climb to cell house was strenuous but well worth it. A tram to the cell house was available for those that preferred not to climb.
Very interesting. My daughter and I really enjoyed the audio tour. It wasn’t too crowded and the weather was nice (March)
Booking in advance made it easier to plan and enjoy the tour. Can plan the day and arrange other activities easier
This is a good tour. W only wish both gift stores were open. The history of the settlement on the island is fascinating yet sad as well.
The tour was excellent but information from viator was not clear at all. Didn’t explain what to do from one tour to the other
It was great. Staff and Rangers were top notch. We really enjoyed ourselves. Do give yourself time to pick up tickets at will call and time to get in line.
Easy to do smooth process, quick boat ride
Lots of hills and stairs. Good audio tour, nice views of the bridge
Didn’t go because I accidentally chose the wrong date when I paid and Viator assured me it was updated, but it was not. I paid $130 into the ether. I wouldn’t recommend this tour company or Viator.
All staff members were friendly and helpful. Very professional. Kind of wish we could have stayed a little longer on our own.
This Tour was fun. Great learning experience, own pace, on time ferry, organized. Well worth the cost snd time to go
Very nice. We went on a Saturday and it was pretty crowded. Would probably be easier to get around and take pictures if we had gone during the week.
We enjoyed the tour, and learned more about Alkatraz history. We learnt that Alkatraz island is not only about prison but also native indian history. We saw Golden Bridge from far, though we had hoped for closer look.
