Itineraries for Your Trip to Kauai
2 Days on Kauai for First Timers
Kauai is my favorite Hawaiian island, without question. I love the diversity of landscapes, from the pristine shores of the Na Pali Coast to the colorful formations of the Waimea Canyon. I’m also hugely fond of the beautiful botanical gardens that dot the islands, and the beaches sure aren’t shabby, either. It also feels less developed than any of the other islands I’ve been to (save for Molokai, with fewer big resorts and more natural areas, ideal for hiking, snorkeling, and soaking up the sun. I just ask that you please tread gently and leave no trace as you explore the island on this two-day itinerary.
The busy holiday season in December and January is also the rainiest time to visit Hawaii. Pack lightweight rain gear or, at the very least, an umbrella.
If you only have time for one thing, make it a hike, boat ride, or flightseeing tour to the Na Pali Coast.
Start your first day off in style with a helicopter tour of Kauai. Take in views (and get great photos) of some of the island’s most incredible natural attractions, including the Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast. After you land, grab a light lunch before heading out on your next adventure.
Spend your afternoon in the water on a snorkeling adventure off the coast of Kauai. Don some fins, a mask, and a snorkel and hop into the Pacific, where you're sure to spot all sorts of marine creatures, from colorful fish to sea urchins. If you're lucky, you may even spot a green sea turtle during your swim.
Learn about Indigenous Hawaiian culture while enjoying some tasty food and beverages by attending a luau, many of which kick off with a traditional lei greeting. While experiences have some variation, most include lots of live music, hula dance performances, and even fire shows, not to mention large feasts of traditional and modern Hawaiian dishes.
On your second day, visit one of Kauai's lush botanical gardens and you’ll quickly learn why Kauai has earned the nickname the “Garden Isle.” Give yourself plenty of time to explore and learn about the flowers and plants that grow freely on the island. To add a little sweetness to your day, join a chocolate-tasting tour at Princeville Botanical Gardens.
In the afternoon, head to the Waimea Canyon, nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” for some outdoor adventure. You can take in the views from the scenic overlook in the parking lot or strap on your sturdiest shoes for a hike down the rocks. For extra thrills, take a guided bike tour into the canyon.
In the evening, head to Common Ground Kauai, a “regenerative food community” that aims to connect people through food while providing great experiences. Evening visits start with campus tours led by guides who explain how the farm works and offer fruit tastings to guests. Then visitors continue to the main lounge for snacks made primarily from ingredients grown at the farm. Alternatively, check out a luau with a buffet dinner.
