Glad we went

Debra_B, May 2026
the Staff was very helpful and knowledgeable, Christian had great stories to share. the appetizers were excellent but i wish i had done the cider rather than champagne. the meal we ordered was not as good as the appetizers (sadly) but we weren't hungry after the appetizers. clean facilities, and comfortable seating. the open air portion was nice too tho some views of the train going around curves were better seen inside. the advertisement gave me the impression that the ride was from flagstaff to sedona (as that was what I had seached) but it wasn't. A little disappointed BUT still enjoyed it. Even though we did not use the handicap assist it was pretty impressive and very helpful to those with wheelchairs and other needs of that sort.

Take some Time on the Tracks

What a great way to celebrate our 10th year anniversary!! My husband and I really enjoyed the ride. The scenery was beautiful, and the tunnel and the bridges make for great pictures. The staff/crew were great and took great care of us by providing a very tasty lunch prior to boarding the train. Once on board they provided plenty of appetizers and drinks, and some history of the area as well. It was a great experience and I highly recommend putting it on your list of “to do’s”!!

Austin and Andy were awesome. They made the trip alot of fun. They pointed out different things along the ride. It was a fun ride. Some sat at tables for two like we did and others sat on love seats. We got to talk with others and find out where they were from. Great experience!!!

Day get away

Crystal_H, May 2026
We arrived early and lunch was provided. The lunch and the ambiance of was very nice. I was under impressed with the view. Of the train ride, I was expecting a little more.

Response from Host, May 2026

Crystal, we appreciate you gave us a try.

Unique thing to do in Sedona

Shailen_S, May 2026
Unique experience. Get intimate into the canyons. Guides and bartender were very friendly. Comfortable train. Scenic views. Well organized. The only reason I get it four stars instead of five, is it is a bit long with 3 1/2 hours round-trip. 2 1/2 hours would’ve been much better.

Scenic Views & VIP Treatment

Sonja_F, May 2026
Let me first say, I didn’t think I was going to make it to the departure point in time — but I made it just in time to check in! I selected lunch from what seemed like a limited menu at first, but the options were actually really good. I was especially impressed by the portion sizes — more than enough food and very tasty. Then, after boarding the train, I was pleasantly surprised to see charcuterie boards waiting for us. The ride began with a memorable champagne toast, and from there the breathtaking views only got better. What truly made the experience unforgettable, though, was our train cart attendant, Craig. I travel often, and I can honestly say I’ve never been on an excursion with someone so knowledgeable and passionate about the experience. Craig shared historical facts about the land, explained weather patterns, and even pointed out where certain animals’ dens and nests were located — all with incredible precision. You could genuinely tell he loves what he does, and he treated every passenger like a VIP. Ryan, our bartender, also made sure everyone was well taken care of throughout the ride. Overall, this was an amazing experience that I would highly recommend. Perfect for all ages, and even as a solo traveler, I never once felt out of place.

Worth it

Such a waste of time and money

Jennifer_H, May 2026
The train ride was extremely long for the kind of mediocre scenery that we had. I guess I was expecting more views of the red rock mountains. The host was very friendly and tried hard to make sure we were taken care of as far as our drinks were concerned. She also was a little too excited to make everyone aware of the toxic environment of the copper mining industry that was abandoned years ago, which led to toxic waste leaching into the nearby Verde Valley River. We passed by an huge heap of coal that was left over from that mining site. Overall, my husband and I felt like it was just a waste of time and money. I truly don’t understand all of the 5 star reviews.

Response from Host, May 2026

Jennifer, we appreciate you gave us a try and thank you for sharing your feedback. We'd love to hear more information about your ride and car assignment so we can discuss your review with our onboard team. Can you please email us at ellen.r@verdecanyonrr.com? While it's true the train was built in 1912 to serve the United Verde Copper Company, the smelter ceased operations in the 1960s and the impressive mountain of "coal" you mention is actually slag, in solid form fairly inert, a molten rock byproduct of the smelter era. The train takes pride in protecting our wild riparian canyon, and the nature and wildlife we share our route with. We're sorry you did not enjoy the scenery as much as many others have.

We had an awesome time!...

Not only did we get to relax and enjoy the view but the staff was very knowledgeable about the area and shared that with us as we went. Would definitely recommend this to friends and family!

Stories, food, and scenery

Aaron_F, May 2026
Definitely show up early. We showed up about 20 minutes before departure and we're rushed. My fault. They fed us in the cafeteria with a meal voucher before departure and with a snack board on the train. The attendants were respectful but took their job seriously. Our outside cart attendant told awesome stories and was friendly. The trip doesnt go through Sedona but it does go through a canyon with some great history. The nearby town of Jarome is also worth visiting.

Response from Host, May 2026

Aaron, we're happy to arrived it in time to ride with us, and appreciate you encouraging others to arrive early. Thanks for your kind words for our views and crew.

Very enjoyable and relaxing. Staff was extremely knowledgeable. Food was decent and seating was comfortable.

Not on an alcohol day

Rena_K, May 2026
Be sure to arrive early. DON'T get the lunch that is free on site. I think if we ever go again, it will be when they are handing out alcohol. It was loud. So loud that we only heard snippets of the monologue. The operators did the best they could.

Response from Host, May 2026

Thanks for giving us a try, Nena. We're not sure what you mean by free lunch. It's included in Viator packages, but not free. We're sorry it sounds like you did not enjoy it? We do not offer free drinks or have an "alcohol day". We do include a complimentary champagne toast as an option when boarding, but there is no other alcohol "handed out". We appreciate your feedback on the narration and our crew.

Gorgeous Ride Through Verde Canyon

Amber_M, May 2026
We did the ride with Verde Canyon Railroad and overall had a really great experience! It’s a quick and easy drive from Sedona, and the scenery is absolutely stunning the entire ride. The crew was amazing — super friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely seemed excited about the history and wildlife along the route. The train itself is really cool and comfortable. One side of the car has little tables for two, while the other side has cozy sofas for couples, which made it feel unique and relaxing. The ride was about 3.5 hours and included lunch, water, snacks, and champagne or sparkling cider. (Unfortunately we arrived late and missed the lunch portion, so definitely get there on time!) There’s also a bar onboard where you can order additional drinks and snacks. My only downside was the atmosphere toward the end of the trip. A few passengers got pretty drunk, and it shifted the vibe from peaceful/scenic to a little loud and obnoxious. It didn’t ruin the experience completely, but it definitely took away from the magical desert train ride feeling a bit. Still, I’d absolutely recommend it for the views, the staff, and the experience itself — especially if you love scenic rides and Arizona landscapes.

Response from Host, May 2026

Amber thanks for riding with us and sharing this detailed recap of your journey. We're happy you enjoyed so many aspects of the adventure. We will definitely discuss your comments about the vibe shift with our onboard team.

Beautiful Scenery

RichardM_C, May 2026
The train was very comfortable and provided a very nice snack box. Other food and beverages were available for purchase. The scenery was beautiful. I thought 3.5 hours was too long. I would have preferred a shorter tour.

Response from Host, May 2026

Thanks for riding with us, Richard.
