Itinerary

For the morning portion of your tour, meet your guide at Piazza Navona to begin your city highlights tour. Head for the Pantheon, the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, and hear how it was built, and the stunning Trevi Fountain.

Take a break for lunch on your own, then meet your guide again. Follow your guide to the Colosseum to begin exploring the ancient world's epic sports arena. Listen as your guide describes the harrowing contests that took place there.

Head over to the Roman Forum, where you climb up a nearby overlook to get a peek inside instead of slogging through the crowds awaiting entrance. From your vantage point, you can see the Temple of the Vestal Virgins and the Senate House, and your guide helps you imagine how the forum functioned as the center of Rome's society two millennia ago.

Then board a vehicle and head to Vatican City. Enjoy skipping the lines and head inside for a curated tour of the Vatican's highlights, during which you see the Laocoön Group, the sculpture galleries, and the Raphael Rooms. End up in the Sistine Chapel, gazing upwards at Michelangelo's famous frescoes.

Please note that this is a walking tour with a quick bus transfer from Central Rome to the Vatican.

A government-issued ID or passport is required for all participants. Without an ID, security may deny entry to the monument. All guests, including children, must bring ID on tour day.
The sites are subject to occasional closures. If modifications are needed and time permits, we will reach out to you prior to your tour. For last-minute closures, modifications may be communicated at the tour start time.
Due to the religious nature of the Vatican Museums, all individuals regardless of gender must cover their shoulders and knees. You can bring extra covering (scarves, etc) to put on just before entering the Vatican.

Best way to see the city

We only had a day and a half in Rome so this was the best way to see everything we wanted to. Getting to go to a private, quiet section of the Colosseum was a highlight. Olga did a Nice job of providing information, but I kind of wish we did less standing and listening at the beginning and more learning while walking or seeing. Everything was super busy but she got us where we needed to go in a timely manner. The gelato by the Vatican was the best I’ve ever had. Don’t skip it! At the end of the tour we didn’t have a way back to our start so we tried to get a cab back to the colosseum. They tried to charge us 5x the rate I paid the day before and wanted cash only. We declined and decided to walk the 3 miles/5km back. Turns out that was worth it as we found several beautiful churches to enter along the way. Way less crowded than the bigger sights but even more beautiful in my opinion.

Our guide was amazing. It was a very intimate group which our guide asked everyone where they were from and made and effort to get to know us. It was a grueling day, but very rewarding. We got to see much of the important. sites in the city and our guide was extremely knowledgeable. There was others in our group that had taken a tour in the Colosseum at that other Tour did not measure up to the quality of this Tour. It was an extremely enjoyable day.

The tour is great. Our tour guide is very friendly and of course very knowledgeable on the Roman history. It was very crowded at the Vatican but he stayed with us to complete the Sistine chapel tour. Nice guy. Tour is good, but you need to have good stamina to stand almost whole day and walk. Fortunately weather is good. Not too hot and no rain. Great spring weather.

Enrica was a fantastic tour Guide.She was very knowledgeable and her English pronunciation was easy to understand. I enjoyed the walking portion of the tour although for some people it may be hefty. We spent a wonderful day in Rome with our guide Sev, who was incredibly knowledgeable and made the history come to life by explaining both the visible details and the hidden stories behind them. His insights added layers of meaning to everything we saw, turning the tour into a rich learning experience rather than just a walk past famous sights. Be aware that this tour involves a lot of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must. I would highly recommend this tour, especially if you want to hit the major highlights of Rome in a short amount of time.

Worth the trip

This was our first trip to Italy. We were in Rome for two days and chose Viator for our Rome in a Day tour. Our guide Sev was a fabulous person. He was knowledgeable and obviously schooled on history and architecture of Rome. He seems passionate about the history of Rome. After having done this tour with Sev we realized that if we had gone at it alone we never would’ve learned about the wonderful history of Rome. I would highly recommend a tour with Sev again. My only negative would be to enforce the times that the group meets up after breaks and to make clear people have to keep up with the rest of the group. We had one family in our group that kept wandering off and not keeping with the group which caused us to wait for them and thus missing important time that could’ve been spent at attractions. Sev was patient and kind. I would recommend Viator again. It was very easy to arrange our excursion and we were very lucky to have gotten Sev!

Vita, our tour guide, was superb. It was a long day with a lot of walking, but she paced the day well, and we never felt hurried or rushed. We were able to see all the main sights we wanted to see with plenty of time. Despite the crowds, we felt comfortable and relaxed throughout the tour. Be prepared for a lot of walking on this tour, but it helps to burn off those vacation calories!
