Itinerary

Meet your guide near Piazza del Popolo to begin your walking tour focused around baroque painter Caravaggio. He spent much of his life in Rome in the late 1500s.

One of Rome’s liveliest squares, Piazza del Popolo is home to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo. Head inside this Augustine church to see two Caravaggio masterpieces —*Crucifixion of St. Peter* and *Conversion on the Way to Damascus*. Then follow your guide along narrow streets like Via Condotti and Via Marguttam with a stop at the Spanish Steps for photos before arriving at the Basilica of Sant'Agostino.

Head inside this hidden gem to admire work by Raphael in addition to Caravaggio’s *Madonna del Loreto*, housed in the Cavaletti Chapel.

Finally, visit the Pantheon, one of the city's most striking pieces of architecture and home to the tombs of the first two kings of Italy. After exploring the interior, your tour will end in Piazza delle Coppelle.

The Best Caravaggio Tour In Rome

Felicity_D, May 2022
Giuseppe was extremely well informed about Caravaggio, Raphael and the history of Rome. He made our tour so memorable. He described the background to the art and set it into context with the Roman Empire. We were a small group of 3 people so it was a very personal and unforgettable experience. Finally we went for an aperitif which was included in the price. I felt that this was unnecessary as we finished the tour at 7pm and had dinner plans. All in all I would thoroughly recommend this tour.

Awesome Tour

Maria was terrific. She took us through several of the churches that house Caravaggio paintings. How amazing to see them in their chosen setting. Maria was extraordinary in reviewing not only Caravaggio’s paintings, but the ones nearby. It was a really fabulous tour.

This was wonderful. Valentina was so passionate about Caravaggio and we finished at the best restaurant for a delicious small bite to eat and Prosecco and wine. One of my favorites. The churches and Caravaggio came to life for us.

This was a fabulous tour. We had expected a perfunctory explanation of the work and the artist, but our guide, Jeanette, was a very knowledgable and interesting guide. The background information on Caravaggio's life was very useful in putting his work in context. If you truly want to come to know his work, and to get a very strong experience for this section of Rome, between Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Navona, this is a great way to do it.

Our very own private little tour as our group of four where the only attendees! Are tour guide was amazing, extremely educated and fun! We were learning so much while causally stolling the streets and popping into different churches here and there. Complete with incredible wine and really wonderful food made this adventure well rounded. Highly reccomended! Would not suggest bringing children on this tour.

There were 7 of us from USA age range 22 -56. Jeanette was an awesome guide that made the history come alive. We all loved the tour. I would recommend this tour to anyone who is interested in history, art and food. The restaurant we went to afterwards, Casa Coppelle, was the nicest restaurant we have been to in Rome. Thank you, Jeanette!!

Excellent guide, beautiful paintings and a couple of glasses of wine - whats not to like. Only caveat: there is a fair amount of walking which some may find daunting.

This was a great tour and certainly worth the money! Jeanette, our guide, was well informed and entertaining and made the stories behind the art come alive. She wove history, sociology, psychology, and art together to give context to these amazing works. Our tour included three churches and six paintings by Caravaggio, as well as stops to look at some Bernini sculptures. Some days the tour includes two churches and the Spanish Steps instead. The two hours of viewing the art, combined with the wine tasting after, was just right. There is a bit of a walk involved, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing and keep in mind that you will need to cover shoulders in the churches. Highly recommended!

Jeanette was very good at inspiring non arty people and we loved the whole experience. Her knowledge and enthusiasm was infectious. We will never look at a painting in the same way again. The drinks and nibbles were a real treat at a fabulous restaurant.

This tour was a great choice and thoroughly enjoyed! Our American born tour guide, but long time resident of Rome, was an absolute delight to spend time with. Her passion and knowledge about Caravaggio as an Artist and why he painted what he painted was contagious. We spent time in two little churches looking at several of his works. She opened our eyes and minds to the idiosyncracies and yet brilliant story that each of these initially bizarre looking paintings told. Not to be phased by the larger than normal number on the tour nor the late afternoon Spring downpour that caught us half way between churches, Barbara soldiered on with fascinating tales of courtesans that frequented the area in bye- gone days as we huddled under umbrellas. The third stop was a really nice cafe where we sampled some excellent Italian wines starting with a Prosecco whilst getting to know each other and discussing aspects of our tour. Brilliant, dont miss it!

An insightful, walking art tour with and extremely knowledgeable guide, who was passionate about the artist and his work. We gained an appreciation for this artist and his works. The tour was topped off by an exceptional wine tasting with superb food at Casa Coppella! Wonderful afternoon tour and a delightful way to cap off the day.

Ginette was excellent, provided great information and interacted easily with an unusually large group of sixteen. The talk and walk (even through a bit of drizzle), was fun, and the wine venue group were super. We were really glad we'd booked the tour. JF

It was an OK trip, not excellent. We had some bad weather and our guide had us standing in the rain while she talked. I think it would be better to have a contingency? The wine and food afterwards was better than expected.

Jeannette was an informative and engaging guide. Pace was good and she added a lot of details that brought Caravaggio to life! The wine bar was great and offered much more than I expected . Not the usual tourist trap that are often the case. In fact i went back for dinner two nights later .

This tour was excellent. The guide Jeanette was very knowledgable and explained how dramatic carraveggio's style was for the time. Also these special paintings commissioned by the various churches. The wine and antipasto at a lovely restaurant made for a perfect ending.

Sam K, Jul 2014
Inga was a great tour guide; she took the tour at an excellent pace, it was very hot so would have been easy to get too tired, but we strolled around and found the shade where ever possible. She knows her subject very, very well and gave lots of background to the paintings, also history of the churches, the city and other famous sights which crossed our path. We stopped at Buccone (fab place for lunch by the way) for a glass of Prosecco and some antipasti after our first church, then finished the tour at a lovely wine bar near the Pantheon; more wine and antipasti! I would definitely recommend the tour if you like Caravaggio - you don't have to be an expert - and are interested in the history of Rome and like knowing more about the famous sights...and you like sipping Prosecco and eating antipasti!!

Marsha M, Mar 2014
My daughter, her husband, my friend and I booked this tour in October 2013 for our trip in March 2014. We were thrilled to find we were the only ones on the tour. Our tour guide Jeanette is an art historian, degreed in art history and a resident of Rome for 9 years. She gave us a wonderful tour! Her background and descriptions of the paintings we saw, as well as the church settings, were far above my expectations. The wine tasting turned out to be more of a meal shared, at the end of the tour, with a couple of glasses of wine at a lovely restaurant where the owners have a friendly relationship with Jeanette and treated us royally. Jeanette was friendly, approachable, and answered all our questions. We could not have asked for a better guide. I believe she shaped her presentation to fit our knowledge and experience, which was much appreciated, as we have travelled and know art as well as history. If you want a sophisticated, insightful tour of some of the Caravaggio treasures in Rome, book this tour, and ask for Jeanette as your guide!

This was an excellent tour and the tour guide was really well informed about the art. The place we were taken to for the wine and cheese tasting after the tour was excellent. The only downside to this tour was that it was not really clear on the meeting place. The meeting was to be at a flower stand near the metro but there is more than one entrance to the metro and we didn't know that the flower stand was across the street from where we exited. We almost missed this excellent tour because of the instructions for the meeting place.

Other than fighting the crowds to see paintings.....very good tour. Jeanette has lots of knowledge of Caravaggio and of the specific paintings. Got to see 6 paintings and learned a lot about Caravaggio. Then, the food was just down right amazing, and the conversation with Jeanette and others on the tour made for a perfect time.

I loved this tour!! One of the best. The guide was great, went out of her way to explain everything and answer all our questions. She took us to her favourite Italian restaurant in the very centre of Rome and ... gosh, we were treated like kings and queens!! A wonderful experience!!!!!

Lindajane_S, Jun 2013
Best tour we have had with Viator ever (and we love Viator tours and find them very trustworthy). Lovely tour guide. Wonderful Caravaggio. Lots of history and culture. 5 star treatment. Consider this a wonderful insight into the history of Rome through the eyes of Caravaggio - and you don't need to know Caravaggio's work before hand as the guide explained everything as we went along. A must if you would like a little art, wine and cheese with your visit to Rome.
