1 Day on Maui for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer who is ready to fly off to Maui at a moment's notice.

There are so many photos of me from visits to Maui as a child, and I've even taken my kids back there a few times. I love a Maui vacation because of the welcoming Hawaiian people, the chill vibes, and, of course, the stunning beaches. My favorite visits include a lot of time spent in the water, on a whale-watching cruise, and relaxing on the beach.

When you have one day in Maui, you'll want to maximize your time with only the best activities, such as snorkeling. A luau is the perfect way to end your day with some delicious food and professional performers. Here's your 1-day Maui itinerary for first-timers.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a snorkeling excursion.

You can expect it to be warm and muggy, with occasional rainstorms.

Morning

When you have one day on Maui, a snorkeling tour is a great option. Getting out on the water means you'll get to see the Maui coastline from a different viewpoint and you can explore the underwater world full of colorful fish and sea turtles. Many snorkeling cruises include snacks or lunch, and some come with hotel pickup to make travel logistics easy. Even non-swimmers will enjoy a boat excursion.

Afternoon

You've seen the island from the water; this afternoon you're going to see it from the air. You can book a parasailing adventure from many of the beaches on Maui, but if you really want to see the island's rocky cliffs, verdant valleys, and waterfalls, a helicopter tour is required. You'll get a glimpse of parts of the island that not many people see, as they are inaccessible to cars. Look for doors-off options if you want to feel the wind in your hair.

Night

You can't visit Maui without attending a luau. Not only do they offer a buffet of Hawaiian specialties, such as kalua pork and poi, but you'll also get fruity cocktails to go with it. The best part is that you can learn about Hawaiian culture through the dance performances and fire shows. This evening, get dressed up in your best Aloha wear to go along with leis that are gifted to you.
