You'll be hard-pressed to find a Granada local who doesn't swell with pride at the mere mention of the Alhambra (Alhambra de Granada). And for good reason; the accolades of this 13th-century fortress, palace, and garden complex are numerous. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Spain's most visited monument, and people travel from across the globe to see it. However, getting an Alhambra ticket reservation can be tough—it’s been likened to bagging tickets for a top soccer match or a Taylor Swift concert.

However, this advice for visiting the Alhambra will help you secure Alhambra tickets and immerse yourself in hundreds of years of Muslim and Christian history. Plus, you’ll find some bonus Granada travel tips to help you make the most of your time in this atmospheric Andalucian city.

What is there to see and do at the Alhambra in Granada?

There are lots of distinct attractions at the Alhambra; here are some of the best.

It can be confusing to navigate the Alhambra as a first-time visitor, because the complex is made up of several distinct areas and attractions. However, some of the best things to see and do at the Alhambra in Granada include soaking up city views from the Torre del Homenaje tower at the Alcazaba, the complex’s highest point; snapping photos beside the famous lion fountain in the Patio de los Leones; admiring the intricate Islamic decoration inside the Nasrid Palaces, which is particularly prominent when illuminated at night; wandering the lush, green Generalife Gardens; and admiring Nasrid art at the Alhambra Museum, which traces the complex’s history and architecture.

What’s the best time of year to visit the Alhambra in Granada?

Winter sees the smallest crowds at Spain’s most-visited monument.

In spring (March–May), the parks and gardens surrounding the Alhambra are fragrant with jasmine and orange blossoms, and the summer heat and crowds are yet to bring the city to a standstill. Avoid August when temperatures can exceed 104°F (40°C)—while the Nasrid Palaces stay cool, the rest of the city feels like an oven.

Insider tip: In June and July, the perfectly circular Charles V Palace hosts theater and flamenco performances. Check the website for dates and to buy your tickets.

What’s the best time of day to visit the Alhambra in Granada?

Get a fresh perspective on the monument after dark.

No matter what time you visit the Alhambra in Granada, you’re likely to find it busy. Choose an early morning or early evening slot to beat the day trippers visiting from other parts of Andalucia, or visit during the cold winter months from December through February. Night visits are arguably the best time to visit the Nasrid Palaces, as the lights illuminate the finer details of the interior decoration. The Generalife Gardens are best seen in the daytime sunshine.

Insider tip: Book a daytime slot for the Generalife Gardens and Alcazaba (the views from the watchtower are great in the day), and an evening tour of the Nasrid Palaces for the best of both worlds.

The opening hours of the Alhambra vary depending on the season.

Alhambra opening hours vary, as different parts of the sprawling complex open and close at different times. For day visits, the entire complex is open from 8:30am until 6pm during the winter season from October through March, but stays open until 8pm in summer. For night visits, it’s open 8pm–9:30pm October–March, and until 11:30pm from April through September. Only the Nasrid Palaces and Generalife Gardens are open at night.

What are the different types of tickets available for the Alhambra?

Different tickets grant you access to separate sections of the Alhambra.

There are four main types of Alhambra tickets available to purchase on the official Alhambra website or through a tour provider. The complete Alhambra ticket package covers all of the Alhambra components, which include the Alcazaba fortress, the Generalife Gardens, and the Nasrid Palaces. You can also buy a ticket that just covers the Alcazaba and Generalife Gardens without the Nasrid Palaces. The other two options are evening visits to either the Charles V Palace and Nasrid Palaces, or the Generalife Gardens.

Do I need to book a ticket for the Alhambra in Granada in advance?

A resounding yes! Advance booking is a must for this historical big hitter.

Alhambra tickets sell out weeks (often months) in advance, and—while you used to be able to—you can’t turn up and buy one on the day. It’s important to book your ticket to the Alhambra as soon as possible—you can buy your Alhambra admission tickets up to three months in advance or book a tour that takes care of tickets even farther ahead of schedule. You can access some parts of the Alhambra without a ticket, though; the Charles V Palace and the adjoining two museums (one is about Christianity, and the other is dedicated entirely to the Alhambra) are free to enter.

Insider tip: If you can’t see any tickets for the Alhambra website a few weeks before your trip, keep checking—there are often cancellations closer to the time. Evening visits tend to sell out more slowly, so they’re a good option if you haven’t snagged a daytime slot.

Combine the Alhambra with other Granada attractions on a tour.

You can explore the Alhambra on a shared tour or private tour, or independently with an audio guide. Most tours of the complex focus on Alhambra history, telling stories of Moorish sultans and Christian kings, while honing in on the rich detail of the Alhambra architecture. Some Granada tours combine a visit to the Alhambra with a walking tour of the historic neighborhood of Albaicín, Granada’s former Muslim quarter that’s also UNESCO–listed.

Insider tip: Not all Alhambra tours include an admission ticket. Typically, only private options or tours booked well in advance also take care of entry. Make sure you book your admission ticket before sorting your Alhambra tour unless your package clearly states that it includes both.

What should I wear to the Alhambra in Granada?

Wrap up ready for the mountain breeze.

While the breeze that blows down from the Sierra Nevada mountains can be a blessing during the scorching summer months, it does mean that Granada can feel extra chilly at night—particularly during winter. If you're taking a tour from late afternoon onward, take a sweater and a jacket. Plus, if you’re walking up to the entrance from Plaza Nueva (New Square), sturdy shoes are a must as the route is steep.

Is the Alhambra in Granada accessible for wheelchair users?

The monument is mostly barrier-free.

Most of the Alhambra in Granada is accessible to wheelchair users. Head to the information center on arrival and a staff member will talk you through the accessible routes and provide a map. Due to the steps leading up to the Alcazaba and its watchtower, this is the only section that is inaccessible. You can also skip the steep hill leading to the complex by taking the shuttle from Plaza Nueva. There are also sign language guides in Spanish and English, plus braille information panels and touchpoints that showcase different textural features throughout the complex for travelers with visual impairments.

Is there a restaurant at the Alhambra in Granada?

Choose between Spanish or Middle Eastern cuisine.

Yes, there are two restaurants at the main entrance of the Alhambra. One serves traditional Andalucian dishes such as pescado frito (fried fish) and jamon Iberico (cured ham), while the other offers a Nazari-inspired menu. You can sample Arabian-style dishes such as crispy filo tubes filled with spiced lamb and chicken tagine. The terrace overlooks the forest surrounding the Alhambra. There's also a café by the ticket office for hot drinks and snacks that’s open throughout the day.

What other attractions are near the Alhambra in Granada?

The Alhambra is within easy reach of two history-rich neighborhoods.

There are plenty of Granada attractions within a short walk of the Alhambra. The historic neighborhood of Albaicín sits beneath it, while Sacromonte is adjacent—home to converted caves where you can watch a flamenco performance. Also nearby is Mirador San Nicólas, from which you can get an unobstructed view of the Alhambra on its forest-shrouded, hilltop perch.

Insider tip: The best place to watch the sunset over the complex is the Mirador San Nicólas. It’s generally much less crowded than other more famous viewpoints, too.

Should I visit the Alhambra or the Real Alcázar in Seville?

The Alhambra and the Royal Alcázar are both stunning displays of Spain’s Islamic architecture.

If you're weighing the Alcázar vs. the Alhambra, the main thing to consider is how much time you want to spend there. While both are architectural marvels and you won't want to speed through either one, the Alhambra is much larger and includes the Generalife Gardens, meaning you could easily spend the whole day exploring. The Alcázar is smaller and you can cover it in an afternoon, leaving time for sightseeing around Seville. If you've got the time, opt for the Alhambra: It offers the most in-depth look at Spain's blend of Muslim and Christian influences in its architecture and culture.
