A lovely mix of historical context, the anthropology of the peoples of this area and the artistic expression they created over the years.
Mary was informative and fun and seemed to know everyone on Canyon Road!
Taking the tour made our time on Canyon Rd MUCH more enjoyable and informative vs just wandering around on our own.

This was an extremely interesting tour not to be missed if you are interested in viewing art and/ or learng a better way to objectively evaluate art shown at many of the famous Santa Fe Canyon Sreet art studios. Learn the history of Santa Fe and it's fascinating connections to the many Native American tribes and their important skills that made many of their every day useful items that have become valuable artistic collector's items today. All brought to by your wonderful art historian and artist in her own right who obviously loves to share her knowledge as your guide. One of the best tours I have experienced.

Very knowledgeable tour guide. Loved how she integrated history, art and art education. Viatoe requires a 100 word minimum (why?)
Eileen_E, Oct 2025
A lot of time was spent on group activities, sharing ideas about what a piece of art means. I would rather have listened to the guide’s expertise and looked at more art. For this much money I don’t want to feel like a 9 year old
Response from Host, Oct 2025
Thank you for sharing your feedback, Eileen. We’re sorry to hear that the tour didn’t fully meet your expectations. Typically about 30 minutes of the two-hour experience takes a more conversational approach, during which we teach an art analysis technique developed by art historians and rooted in constructivist learning theory. It’s designed to help guests engage more deeply with art, and while it’s interactive, similar methods are used in professional training for critical observation in the STEM and intelligence fields. Many guests find this to be a unique and thought-provoking part of the tour, and our hope is that by providing a tool people can use again and again, they will continue to have rich and valuable experiences with art even when a guide is not present.
This was a public tour, which allows for lively group discussion and accommodates all levels of experience with art. We also offer private tours—bookable on Viator or directly through Santa Fe Art Tours—for guests who prefer a different pace and focus.

Good tour. Knowledgeable tour guide. Learned a bit of history regarding the Canyon Road art galleries and toured 5 galleries. Saw good variety of art covering different media. Easy walking pace. Tour went by quickly; wished it were an hour longer.
Response from Host, Sep 2025
Hi Ellen, thank you so much for your review! I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour so much that you wished it were longer. :) It was lovely meeting you both!

I recently took this tour on Canyon Road with Santa Fe Art Tours, and it was a wonderful experience! Our guide, Elaine, was incredibly knowledgeable about the sites and art galleries, sharing insights with her rich background in art history. She selected the top highlights, ensuring we experienced the best of what Canyon Road offered.
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Thank you so much for the lovely review! I am so happy to hear that you enjoyed your tour of Canyon Road.
LeAnne_R, Jun 2025
There is very little history presented on this tour. The tour should be listed as an art gallery tour, not art and history.
Response from Host, Jun 2025
Hi LeAnne,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m sorry to hear the experience didn’t align with your expectations. The tour is titled "Canyon Road Art and History Tour" because we explore both the artwork in galleries and the historical context of Santa Fe and Canyon Road. That said, the description clearly emphasizes that the primary focus is on art and describes this offering as a gallery tour.
We do cover quite a bit of history—particularly as it relates to the evolution of Canyon Road, the cultural influences on the art, and Santa Fe’s unique identity as an art center—and we visit a historic site that houses the Historic Santa Fe Foundation. The tour is designed to provide a strong foundation in the city’s cultural and artistic history, especially as it connects to the art scene today.
If you were hoping for a tour that focuses more exclusively on historical landmarks or offers a deeper dive into local history, there are other excellent options in Santa Fe that cater specifically to that interest.

We booked this tour based on its amazing reviews, and they were right! Our tour size was just 4 very interested people. Our guide, Elaine, was knowledgeable, organized, interesting, and friendly. We visited some lovely galleries, had fun learning to interpret art pieces, and enjoyed stories about the history of the area. It was the perfect introduction to Canyon Road.
Response from Host, Nov 2024
Barbara, thank you so much for the lovely review! I'm so glad you enjoyed your tour of Canyon Road. I hope you had an amazing time in Santa Fe!

What a great experience! As several of the others on this small tour, I enjoy art, but don’t know much about it. Elaine led a great group tour and we learned a lot. This was an engaging and fun way to see a bit of the amazing art on Canyon Road.
Response from Host, Nov 2024
Thanks so much for the great review, Betsy! I'm thrilled to hear that you learned more about the art in Santa Fe. I'm so glad you had fun on the tour!

Guide Mary had great commentary on Canyon Road, history of Santa Fe and gave us thought provoking ways of looking and appreciating art. It was interactive which is a nice way to keep group engaged.
Response from Host, Sep 2024

This was a great tour. Elaine was a wonderful tour guide. She gave us a new appreciation for the art and we even learned how to look at and interpret different pieces of art. She is so knowledgeable and able to bring the history of the art alive too. I think this is a must do when visiting Sante Fe.
Betty_L, May 2024
This was my second tour with Canyon Rd. Art and History Walking Tour and I enjoyed it as much as the first in 2019. Mary was a great host full of interesting facts about NM culture and the information and connections to the galleries and art were a real plus.
ddsross, Oct 2023
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable so it made the tour a wonderful experience. The art galleries are outstanding. I would recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys art.

Susie_B, May 2023
Tour guide Mary took to much time on herself and students ... Didn't even get to the last 2 galleries before ran out of time.
Response from Host, May 2023
Hi Susie, we're sorry your expectations were not met. Upon reviewing internally, I see that all the gallery visits were completed as planned on your tour.
All groups move at a different pace and we work diligently to move groups efficiently. If your tour ran a few minutes over, you should have been given the option to depart the tour or stay late to visit the last gallery. Upon review, my understanding is that you did opt to stay for the final gallery. If this is not the case please let me know so we can review internally. I would like to understand better what exactly happened, and would appreciate you contacting me at info@santafearttours.com or 505-985-5298.
Lee_D, May 2023
We woke up to a snow storm but proceeded to the art gallery anyway. The snow subsided and the tour was well worth it. Thanx so much for the superb expertise
Response from Host, May 2023
Thank you so much for your review! I'm so glad that you decided to brave the snow and explore Canyon Road with us. I'm so happy to hear that you found the tour worth it!
Karin_W, Apr 2023
The tour was informative both about the history of the Santa Fe region and of the development of the art industry. Our guide was engaging and kept this "non art history" major interested
Response from Host, May 2023
Karin, thank you so much for your review! I am so glad to hear that you found the tour interesting and engaging.
mamajo, Mar 2023
Our tour guide was simply wonderful. She was knowledgeable, informative, and very encouraging. We visited four different galleries, and at each place she explained not only the art but the history of the different artist. It was a wonderful learning experience, and I would encourage anyone to take the opportunity to learn more of not only the art of Santa Fe, but some of the history of Santa Fe.
Response from Host, Mar 2023
Thank you so much for taking the time to review your tour! I am so glad that you enjoyed the experience and had a great time exploring Canyon Road.
Carolan_D, Oct 2022
Great guide - very knowledgeable and friendly! Our guide shared meaningful information and area history. So glad we did this tour otherwise we may have missed out on an important part of Santa Fe’s art & history. Highly recommend!
Helen_O, Jun 2022
It was a fun experience visiting an artist studio and gallery! Mary gave us the background on Canyon Road. She is wonderful at making the tour interesting and informative!!
Erica_D, Apr 2022
This was an intimate view into some of the art and galleries on Canyon Road. Lots of variety and met some gallery owners as well. Guide was very knowledgable and personable. We were a small group which I enjoyed. We focused on some specific historic events and art works, so I came away with clear memories rather than a "general overview" experience that kind of washes away.
Response from Host, May 2022
Erica, thanks so much for your review! We really appreciate it. I love reading this so much: clear memories rather than a general overview that kind of washes away. That's definitely the kind of experience we hope to provide. Thank you!
marissanoguez, Feb 2020
Elaine was terrific. She was knowledgeable, kind, and professional. Her personality was perfect. The gallery she selected were exquisite. We loved the variety!
Response from Host, Feb 2020
Marissa, thank you so much for your kind words! I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour and the galleries. I had so much fun on tour with you! I hope you'll come back and see us again soon.
julianneinoh, Oct 2019
2 hours cannot do justice to the beautiful & unique Canyon Road arts district in Santa Fe. Our guide Elaine took our group of 6 to a few galleries, each different. Her knowledge of various media was excellent and she was approachable and laid back. I think this would be a great 4-hour tour with lunch break in the middle. Definitely recommend. Only reason I didn't give 5 rating is that it was too short.
Response from Host, Oct 2019
Hi Julianne! Thanks so much for your review. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the tour – and that you liked it so much you found it too short!
I agree that it's possible to spend much longer on Canyon Road. This particular tour is designed to be a shorter, introductory experience, but we also offer customized, private tours for those who would like a longer tour or a full-day (or multi-day) experience. These tours can be booked through Santa Fe Art Tours directly. Thank you again!
Victoria_J, Oct 2019
So glad we did this tour. We visited galleries and private collections. We saw a variety of artist, style, and various mediums of art. The tour gave a sampling of what Canyon Rd. had to offer. Some of the places we went I don't think we would have stopped on our own to see, but so glad we did. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable about the history of Canyon Rd as well as art history. At the end of the tour we were able to continue to explore on our own.
Companion424551, Apr 2019
Our guide was knowledgeable, fun, insightful....simply the best. We learned so much, saw the highlights and left with a greater understanding of the history and culture of the Santa Fe art world.
Response from Host, Jul 2019
Thank you so much for taking the time to review your tour. I am so glad to hear that you enjoyed it and found it worthwhile. I hope you'll visit us again soon!
Richard_W, Sep 2018
Our party of 4 had a great time with 5 other people on a leisurely two-hour walk up Canyon Road. What made the tour so special was the efforts of the owner/guide, Elaine. She has created a unique experience for her guests, using her academic and experiential training in arts history and museum studies that made the tour interactive, engaging, and informative without it being boring or unengaging. The price pp is reasonable and well worth the education. After the tour, we wandered back down Canyon Road and bought a beautiful piece of artwork.
