Our guide, David was great! He was into history which was great for us. Me, my husband and two friends. Overall, the food was very good. Our last tour ( not the dessert) was average. Very nice location but the food was average at that location, could’ve been better. The
last place, the dessert place pastel de Nata was great!

Our guide was RICARDO, the best guide for this type of tour. We booked this tour to get a good overview of where to go to eat during our visit. Usually, he takes groups of up to 12 people, but we ended up being his only two clients that tour so a private tour! He was on time at the square we were advised to meet, and he held up an EATING EUROPE sign so quite easy to find him. He was very easy to talk with right from the beginning and really made us feel welcome and important. He asked us about any food allergies of which there were none and then informed us of the plan for the tour. Throughout the tour he provided historical background to the areas we were walking and how it fit together in Lisbon's history and also how the Portuguese food and drink made sense. He also left some mystery to the tour so we were very intrigued how it would proceed. A nice touch.
First stop was a lovely little restaurant cafe called LEVE LEVE for chicken skewers and a cold Sagres beer. Perfect pairing as it was a warm evening. There was a great dipping sauce of peanut flavours. Tremendous tastes, not too spicy but enough heat to make an impression. Topped off with goat’s milk cheese on a cracker with honey and nuts. Wow. A truly Mediterranean and African influenced tasting. The nice thing about the experience overall was there was not pressures to taste anything or to drink his suggested pairings, we could have chosen otherwise but felt it important to try his suggestions and it worked throughout the whole tour.
Walked on to a small family groceteria with a restaurant. Mercearia do Pai Júlio . Here we had canned sardines but prepared in a flambe of brandy with a small salad and light white wine. Excellent and, I’m not a seafood lover. A truly family meal experience. Next stop was a restaurant called Taberna Carolina for a Bifana sandwich with a red wine. Started with a vegetable potato soup and then the sandwich on a plater with a mustard available for even more flavour. Next on the tour was a restaurant called Wine Not where we tried their Vino Verde. Excellent. Here we had a codfish croquette and a pork croquette. Again, a great pairing.
As we moved on to the last stop, we paused for a truly local drink at Ginjinha do Carmo . A shot of ginginha, a liqueur made from sour cherries served in a dark chocolate cup. So tasty. But there is a secret! Keep the cup and go back inside for a free refill before you consume the cup. And finally, we headed down through the main Restauradores Square to the very appropriate Fábrica de nata for pasteis, the local custard pastry that is found just about everywhere in Portugal, and no, you can’t eat just one a day! Topped off here with a coffee and seat at one of the café tables to watch the rest of the city go by. It was here that Ricardo left us to enjoy the remainder of our evening, not even needing to go find a restaurant for dinner as we were quite satisfied with our tastings, learning the history of the city and the pairings he had provided.
I highly recommend taking a tour like this in every city if you can to get a feel for the local fare and flavours as well as some history and get oriented to where to go next.
Response from Host, Apr 2024
Dear Andy,
Wow, what an incredible and detailed review! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Ricardo on the tour. It sounds like you had a truly unforgettable culinary adventure in Lisbon. Ricardo seems to have gone above and beyond to ensure you had a fantastic time, from his warm welcome and informative commentary to his thoughtful pairing suggestions. The variety of dishes and drinks you tried, from chicken skewers and Sagres beer to pastéis de nata and ginginha liqueur, truly showcase the diverse and delicious flavors of Portuguese cuisine. We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed every moment of the tour and felt satisfied with the experience. Your recommendation to take a tour like this in every city is invaluable for fellow travelers seeking to discover local fare, flavors, and history. Thank you once again for choosing our tour and sharing your glowing review!
