Lots of winding roads to...

Lots of winding roads to get to the winery so if you have motion sickness, I suggest taking something before departure. Otherwise a pleasant excursion I would highly recommend. We had a small personal group of 6 which is the way to go in my experience. Our tour operator Chris was a super friendly and insightful guy. We had a wonderful day and the lunch provided was so much food! And a delicious Portuguese feast. Be careful with the amount of port wine you consume… 20% alcohol!

History lesson from the water

Our hosts were great. They spent significant time with my family onboard, sharing history and culture from the perspective of seasoned sailors and locals from Porto. Although weather didn’t cooperate to raise sails (us sailors know Mother Nature doesn’t always give you perfect days), we made the most of our time on the water. The tour is really great. We were contemplating if we should do it or not but eventually, it’s a great thing we decided to do it. The door of valley itself is amazing wine region, especially the beauty of the tall mountains, and the Vineyard, which is very unique. We are from near Napa and still appreciate the region . The tour itself is great . We were in a small group . Great tasting experience and lunch and free flowing wine , maybe a bit too free flowing at the end lmao . All is all great for the price .

A nice way to see the city and sample the cuisine

We had five stops on this tour which were very different. Our tour guide Maggie was engaging and knowledgeable. We saw interesting shopping areas and historic buildings along the way. Maggie also shared details of life as a local of Porto. My only comment in ways to improve this, was that due to the messaging I didn’t realize this was a private tour. I am one of those people that would rather take a food tour with a group. My husband and I were the only ones eating and that felt a little awkward at times.

Informative & fun port tour in Gaia

Flavio was an excellent guide. He did not just give info but also asked lots of questions of us and worked to get everyone to really get in in tune with their own palate and preferences. Don’t be surprised that you will receive a lot of information first before the tasting begins. But there is plenty of time to taste and talk about the tastings, and a good variety although it would’ve been nice to have something besides just the rose port at the 2nd stop. Flavio also got everyone talking and laughing, which made it go by quickly, and was very candid in his opinions.

This Porto port lodge tour was an absolute highlight of our trip and I’d highly recommend it without hesitation. What made it so special was the great variety — we visited three distinct lodges, from a small boutique producer with a fascinating operation and incredible wine, to a newer up-and-coming spot, to one of the grand old historic caves that really shows you the scale and tradition of port production. There was no shortage of wine to enjoy throughout, and the final stop even treated us to a lovely charcuterie spread to finish things off perfectly. Our guide Alex was absolutely fantastic — knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely made the whole experience come alive. If you’re in Porto, this is a must-do.
