While it’s free to visit Audubon Park on your own, there are plenty of tours that can help you learn more about its century-long history. Audubon Park is a popular spot for outdoor recreation, featuring a 1.8-mile (3-kilometer) jogging path, tennis courts, soccer fields, playgrounds, and picnic pavilions. Walk beneath allées of oaks on your way to visit the Tree of Life and the Audubon Zoo, or sit on a bench by the central lagoon and watch the local wildlife.

From the French Quarter, take the St. Charles streetcar line to the Expedition, Tulane/Loyola, or Tulane University stop—about a 35-minute ride. You can also ride your bike and explore the park on two wheels once you arrive. There’s ample free parking on-site if you choose to drive.

Audubon Park is open from 5am to 10pm, giving you plenty of options. You can take a sunrise stroll around the lagoon, pack an afternoon picnic, or go birdwatching in the early evening. Be sure to check the weather and dress accordingly, especially during the rainy season when heavy rainfall can come on suddenly.

Bring your binoculars to Audubon Park to see birds such as egrets, herons, cormorants, and anhingas. You’ll have the best chance of bird-watching along the shores of Bird Island in the center of the Audubon Park Lagoon.
