Cool experience but uncomfortable with a sour ending

Vittorio_L, Sep 2026
On the one hand, it was pretty cool to see a sumo practice firsthand. On the other hand, the experience could have been improved a bit for the attendees. Naturally, you're watching what basically amounts to a workout, so a lot of it is rather slow- not exciting like a match. Still cool, but the chairs they have in this place are really awful, and after two hours of slow entertainment in an uncomfortable seat, I was dying to leave. And I was a little offended on the way out- this was the one and only place in Japan that asked me for a tip. Tipping is absolutely not practiced in Japan, so it completely felt like they were trying to take advantage of American sensibilities to squeeze a little more money out of attendees.

Highlight experience of our Japan trip

We had a fantastic tour guide Nori who explained us before the training the basics and was very pleasent and kind. The training was an absolute once in a lifetime experience, watching real professional Sumo wrestlers do their intense morning routine under the strict eyes of the stable coach and boss. We could take photos and talk to the wrestlers afterwards. Highly recommended Japanese experience.

Loved it! Went with our kids. So fun and interesting. Question and answer at the end was good too. Very real sumo experience
