Hirosan was an informative guide. I did appreciate him providing context and information ahead of time. However, I did feel a little awkward watching the wrestlers. It felt like a bunch of white people gawking at Japanese athletes for a sport we’ve never seen live, but maybe that was just the vibe I was picking up on. Overall, a very educational experience and I walked away with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the sport of sumo.

Attending the sumo morning practice was a great experience. Hiro is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about sumo and did a great job explaining the basics of the stable system, training, and earning promotions in rank. I was in awe of the rikishi and their work ethic. I attended with my brother and afterwards we felt that we had gained a greater appreciation for this aspect of Japanese history and culture. Highly recommended!

The photos of the sumo photo trip look interesting, but our experience was far more fabulous than that. Hiro, our guide, explained in depth what you would experience and what to look for during the sumo practice session.
After it was over, he gave us more information which added to our experience. He is extremely knowledgeable, spoke very good English, and was more than helpful. He even helped us get a cab back to our hotel, which was a plus. In my book Hiro is our hero.

Great activity. Hiro was a great guide. Actual sumo practice. Not just staged for tourists. Would definitely recommend!

We’re really glad we did the sumo tour—it was a unique and interesting experience, and something we wouldn’t have been able to access on our own. Our guide was very kind and courteous, and everything ran smoothly.
That said, a couple of things could have made it even better. The overall timing felt long and probably could have been condensed, and having more explanation or context during the session itself would have helped us stay more engaged with what we were watching. The floor seating was also uncomfortable for a two-hour stretch.
We also didn’t quite feel like welcomed guests—more like observers—which was fine, and kept it authentic, yet probably took a little away from the experience. But overall, we’re still glad we went and appreciated the opportunity to see it up close. Very interesting to experience, thank you!

We’re truly glad to hear that you found the sumo tour to be a unique and interesting experience, and that you enjoyed the opportunity to witness something not easily accessible on your own. We also appreciate your kind words about your guide and are happy to know everything ran smoothly.
At the same time, we sincerely appreciate your constructive feedback. Your comments regarding the duration of the tour, the need for more explanation during the session, and the comfort of the floor seating are very valuable to us. We also understand your feelings about the atmosphere and guest experience, and we will take this into consideration as we look for ways to improve while maintaining authenticity.

What a fantastic experience, loved every minute of it. Marie was very informative and gave us lots of important information, oh and the good seats at the front too. Would highly recommend

Marie, our guide, was passionate and knew so much about sumos and their lifestyle and traditions. She was so insightful! Thank you again! We had the chance to sit right next to the ring and it was truly a great experience. Sumos are so strong and disciplined in their practice, it is impressive. Sitting on chairs was also a great incentive! The little booklets handed out were also really useful. Directions to the meeting point were also very clear.

This was the real deal and not something sideshow skit. Hats off to these wrestlers for showing true grit and resolve during practice. And practice HARD they did. Thanks to our guide Marie for the great insights. I would definitely recommend this for the purists who appreciate sumo as the sport it really is.

We were not going to be in Tokyo during matches so we opted to attend a practice session at one of the stables. Our guide Marie was so passionate about the sport and ensuring wr had an amazing experience. We learned so much from Marie and the practice session was in many ways better than a match because wee were able to see close up the training and dedication that goes into Sumo. We highly recommend both the experience and Marie!

Watching the practice feels as close to watching a tournament as you can get. We're sumo fans, and we chose this specifically because it didn't have any hokie "get in the ring with the wrestlers". Not dissapointed. Marie was so perfect as a guide - super enthusiastic sumo fan who was able to answer any questions we threw at her. One of the highlights of our trip to Japan.
Also the athletes are so good tempered about taking photos after, don't know how they do it. Thanks for being so nice!

Easy to meet . Short walk . Short explanation and direct to practice.
After practice all questions were answered .
If you never seen sumo before may be worth to ask the instructor after the practice for a short 5 minutes about the history of Sumo and basic rules

We enjoyed seeing rising sumo wrestlers in training interacting with their Stable Master, head trainer, and each other. Their athleticism is astounding and their reverence towards the practice and their teachers moving. Highly recommend.

Excellent insight into the world of sumo. A very interesting morning. Would recommend to all ages. A bonus too, to have your photo taken with the sumo wrestlers.

Wow!!! This was such an amazing experience for my son and I. We were very impressed my the sheer strength of the wrestlers. While some of them were quite massive in size, others were taller, and a couple were even “regular” sized men. Watching them crash into each other again and again and again was quite something. We were amazed at how they could continue to take hit after hit without falling down. Observers could easily tell that they were working hard and that practice was meant to be taken seriously. But the most interesting thing we noticed was their agility. These massive men were incredibly agile, easily able to squat down on their resting position before each round. At the end, while we watched them do their stretching exercises, some of the men were able to down to the ground in full spilts!!! They could also easily stretch fully forward in that position. Amazing! These men are very athletic and it was a great experience and honor to be able to watch them practice.

All went smoothly. Great to see the rikishi doing their thing - a mix of stretching and repetitive exercises, and practice bouts. We were in the back row, but despite what was said at the outset no-one seemed to mind us standing, so we had a good view. We were given a sheet with the names and photos of the members of the stable so we could identify some of them. There was a group photo opportunity at the end with the rikishi, and afterwards we were able to chat to the youngest one (who had good English - and looked from his bouts like a great future prospect!) outside the building.

Very unique experience. My boys and I enjoyed learning about this major Japanese sport.
We were one of three groups. Around 20 people total. So everyone could see without issues.
The athletes were very focused on their training so the small audience didn’t seem to distract them.
Mulan_H, Jun 2024
We absolutely loved the experience!
The wrestlers are so impressive and you can feel the weight of the tradition and the sacred sport. This was an honour.
