Sumida Hokusai Museum Tours and Tickets

Even if you don’t know the name Katsushika Hokusai, you have probably seen his famous masterpiece The Great Wave off Kanagawa. While I am not an art historian, I deeply admire Katsushika Hokusai. I would love to share the Sumida area where he spent much of his life and explore the places connected to his story together. On this tour, you will also learn about the Edo period when Hokusai lived and Japanese sumo culture, Japan’s national sport.

This small-group tour helps you learn about two Japanese cultural icons: the art of Hokusai and the tradition of Sumo wrestling. We’ll stop for a traditional lunch in a lively food hall, then visit the Great Kanto Earthquake Memorial Museum and Tokyo Memorial Hall to reflect on how Tokyo’s people endured catastrophe and loss. From there, we continue to a shrine dedicated to the legendary ancestor of sumo, before stepping into the colorful world of Hokusai—whose art captured Edo’s vibrant spirit even in hard times. This tour is a living story of survival, remembrance, and renewal—a walk through Tokyo’s heart of resilience.

Ryogkoku area well known as Sumo town has many museums of various Japanese traditional themes such as Sumo, Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e Wood block print, Japanese Sword and Edo Museum. We walk along Sumo town while the guide will talk about historical background and lead to the museums. The walking tour starts at Sumida Hokusai museum with 1800 collections of wood block prints by Hokusai and his apprentices. After strolling at Yasuda Japanese garden and Ryogoku terrace café, we visit Japanese sword museum where wide variety of sword, sword mountings, armors and others are displayed and video introduces process of making sword.

A traditional Japanese tour that you must experience when you come to Japan. You will enjoy an early morning private viewing of ukiyo-e paintings by Katsushika Hokusai at the Sumida Hokusai Museum, a workshop to experience making Hokusai's karakuri folding screens, an Edo-mae sushi lunch, and matcha green tea and Japanese sweets after the meal. This is a 4.5-hour experience tour starting in the morning to experience traditional Japanese culture. In this tour, Japanese craftsmen will be present at each booth, allowing you to casually communicate with them and enjoy conversations with them that you would not normally be able to hear. Feel like you’re big in Japan during this 2.5-hour tour of Ryogoku (sumo town) and the historic Asakusa district led by a sumo wrestler. Follow your hulking host as you check out the Ryogoku kokugikan sumo stadium, see where the wrestlers practice and visit a sumo goods shop. Then head to Asakusa, where you’ll check out the iconic Senso-ji temple, sample some snacks and shopping on Nakamise Street and much more. A translator and sumo guide are both included.

The tour focuses on the area of Ryogoku, on the Tokyo's east side. Ryogoku is well-known as the center for the sumo world where a tournament is held three times a year. The itinerary will provide insight to the sport with opportunity to view an actual sized ring as well as a visit to the Sumo Museum on the days it is open. Besides sumo, the area has a rich history with many temples and shrines though a majority of the buildings that once stood were destroyed either by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 or the bombing during World War II. A small but informative exhibition hall tells us the story of what happened during these difficult times and how the city quickly recovered.

Japanese culture begins with hospitality. You will tour sumo related facilities and other cultural facilities in Tokyo in an elegant manner with a dedicated driver-guide and a luxury car. First, you will be photographed in a Japanese kimono at a lounge in Ginza. You will go sightseeing in original Global Kimono. The Global Kimono will be given to you as a souvenir from us. In the morning, we will observe the serious training of active sumo wrestlers in the Yamahyo Room, view the history of sumo and the glory of past yokozuna at the Sumo Museum, and stop by the Ryogoku Goodwill and Sumo Sundry Shop to fully enjoy sumo culture. For lunch, enjoy chanko-nabe, a famous meal for sumo wrestlers. In the afternoon, you will visit the Sword Museum to experience the culture of swords and the Hokusai Museum to experience the culture of ukiyo-e prints. Afterwards, we will take you back to the place of your choice in Tokyo.
