Itinerary
On August 24 in the year 79 AD, nearly 2,000 years ago, the volcano Mt. Vesuvius began erupting. It blanketed the nearby town of Pompeii, freezing the 20,000 denizens with its ash and molten lava, thus perfectly preserving this ancient Roman city. On this half-day guided walking tour, you can see the best that the archeological site has to offer.
After your driver picks you up from your hotel in Naples, the railway station in Naples, or the Naples cruise terminal, enjoy the ride to Pompeii, roughly 30 miles (48 kilometers) away.
Meet your guide at the entrance and prepare to be dazzled by this UNESCO World Heritage Site. See the city walls and the Porta Marina gate that was once the entryway to the harbor of Pompeii. Explore the ancient theater where performances were regularly given. Gawk at what once was a Roman version of a ‘fast food’ restaurant, where vast vases still stand that were used for storing food. Stop at the Forum and learn about the political system in Pompeii and what the Forum was used for. Walk down the basalt-laden streets and squares of the city.
See the blocks that provided stepping-stones across the often-flooded and sewage-filled streets; and view must-sees such as the Temple of Apollo, the Macellum market, and the public weighing scales.
And, intriguingly, see the casts of victims who were immediately frozen by the volcanic eruption. Stop by the thermal baths, a popular pastime in ancient Roman times. And even visit an old brothel, also a much-enjoyed proclivity among Roman men.
Transport-Only Option: If you prefer to explore the Pompeii ruins independently, the transport-only option offers private round-trip transportation from Naples and lets you spend time in Pompeii on your own. Your driver will wait for you while you wander around Pompeii for a couple of hours and then take you back to Naples. There is also an audio guide available (additional cost).

Our driver was very good and communicated with our tour guide so that she met him right at our car. The tour guide was very friendly and knowledgable, even snapping pictures of us for us and taking extra time for us as they had a special market there that day. Then she walked us right to our drivers car. We had a wonderful time and learned so much!

The ride to Pompeii was the normal European drive... swerving and braking but the van was in a very bad need of new shocks, I think I lost a kidney. The tour was fast and informative as we usually like, but this one was a little too fast...it felt very rushed to the point of we finished an hour early. We would have liked to stop for water and souvenirs but we're rushed to return to the ship/port. Overall it was ok.

Our guide was fantastic! 5 stars to her!! We were given a meeting point but our driver was given a different meeting point. I couldn’t get the tour operator on the phone but Viator was able to contact them & have the driver sent to our location. This cost us about an hour in Pompeii which was disappointing.

Non-plussed...not worth the money. While Pompeii itself was interesting, our guide was completely disinterested and not engaging. We paid $450 for two adults and a 12 year old to be picked up in Naples and given a private tour. The tour company was non-communicative after some initial emails. They told us to contact them the evening prior to the tour, but did not respond through Viator or through WhatsApp. Thankfully we had a local sim card and were able to call them to arrange a meet up in Naples.
The driver picked us up at the meeting point on the sidewalk,we asked for his name during the call the night prior,had we not known his name, we probably would have taken quite a while to find him. He spoke no English and we speak no Italian.
When we arrived in Pompeii, the guide met us at the vehicle. She did not introduce herself until I introduced us, she was actually walking away and I wasn't sure if she was the guide or some kind of coordinator. She was very knowledgeable but seemed to not want to be there. She delivered her facts in a non stop, monotone delivery; neither exciting, nor interactive. My son was not feeling well so we used that as an excuse to cut the tour short and cut our losses.
I definitely would not recommend this tour, in hindsight we probably could have hired a car for $100 and gotten a guide on site. I don't like to be negative, but this was a loser. We have toured in Kenya, Vietnam, Indonesia, UK, Bangkok, Siem Reap, Jordan, Turkey, Bahrain, Rome and many other spots. We usually book a private tour so we can really engage with the guide, by the end of other tours, we feel like we have made a friend...sometimes even family! This was not one of those times.

The tour was as described and pictures in listing were totally accurate. Actually the tour seemed rushed and we finished much quicker than what was anticipated. The guide was helpful and good communicator about the history and the points of interest. The views and attractions were outstanding. Overall a good tour - with no issues at all. Transportation to/from Naples train station was perfect. It just seemed a little short on expected length of time at the site.

Driver was great. Please note, nothing but transportation is included. Very expensive to take a glorified taxi to the site. Site was nice but not having a guide was a drawback. Pay the extra money for a guide.

I truly enjoyed our half-day trip to Pompeii. This particular tour through Project Napoli Service worked very well for my family because they were able to pick us up close to our rented villa and bring us back to that location. To clarify, our villa was on a pedestrian only street so we did have to arrange to meet the driver at the corner of our street. Our driver was Jean Franc. He was pleasant and helped us meet up with our tour guide. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and very helpful as one in our party is in a wheelchair. I would recommend this tour!

I have always wanted to see Pompeii. Good weather is a blessing, so we were very fortunate. Our guide was wonderful, Lilli R.
For some reason i thought that Pompeii would be frozen in time, with people frozen in place. Due to weather and in order to
preserve, all has been sealed inside glass. The vivid fright and shock is so real. Make sure you go early so that you miss the crowds.
We paid extra for a private tour and it was worth EVERY penny.

Absolute "rip off" you promote pick up and your own guide ( both of which were excellent) pay big sum of money for this, then when you get to meet your guide she tells you that you can't go into Pompeii until you all pay another 14 euros each
BE WARNED entrance is EXTRA yes ON TOP of what you pay !!!

The trip to Pompeii was wonderful. We were picked up at the Naples train station and transported to Pompeii for our tour. We had a small group and our tour guide was very thorough, informative and accommodating. On the return trip we were able to be dropped off at a museum so they were flexible in pick up and drop off locations.

Our driver and tour guide were great. We had a delay with being able to get off our cruise ship but they still made sure we were able to complete the tour.
Lily, our tour guide, was very informative and took us to the more interesting parts of Pompei. A very interesting place to visit.

Pompeii is truly an amazing site - which is why this review gets two stars instead of one. It is incredible to see how people lived so very long ago. Unfortunately, it was absolutely overrun with tours. Our tour guide was not friendly, ran through the talking points in an annoyed and bored tone. Her knowledge was tourist pamphlet level at best. She was just going through the motions. At the end she tried to say good bye to us without showing us the main square where the famous petrified dog is and other artifacts. It was a very hot day and I hate to say it but her body odor was unbearable. We had to hold our pamphlets in front of our faces to avoid the smell. Our driver from Naples to Pompeii and back was very friendly and helpful.

Simply great. A beautiful big, shiny car picked us up from our hotel and took us to Pompeii with our lovely guide. She spoke excellent English and was very well informed, enthusiastic and friendly too. We learned a lot and enoyed the whole tour very much.

Our Pompeii guide, Francesca, was excellent. The skip the line claim is valid she got our tickets in a special line that was very short, so our wait was only a few minutes. Be aware that this tour price does NOT include admission to Pompeii. The only glitch we had was that our driver was late for the pick-up at the port, so this necessitated a call to the local operator, who responded that he is on his way, which meant 20 minutes late.

This tour was a major dissapointment. Basically you`ve got a transport, a guide waiting at the Pompei and transport back. All of this for huge price premium. Way different experience from other Viator private tours. Hiring a taxi from Naples and a Pompei guide in advance would do the same for fraction of the price. BTW the guide was good - very good in explanations yet shortened the tour by about 20min. The driver was rude, couldn`t speak english at all, on the way back he left us waiting for 20minutes in front of the car being on phone all the time. Days before the tour we have asked the tour provider to extend it with visit to Vesuv on the way back from Pompei. The tour provider asked about details, we answered and he newer came back to us. There was no contact from the tour provider to us once in Pompei and when we asked about it on the way back (the driver called him) he explained that it is Viator mistake as no of our messages came back to him. Simply a big mess. We`ve had two private tours with Viator this yeare before this one, the last happened just a day before this one in Naples as well and the experience was way different.
