Poor Guided Tour of Pompeii - Great Journey too Pompeii

The guide taking is too and from Pompeii from Naples was amazing and provided several engaging facts about the local area, food and history. We really enjoyed the journey too and from Pompeii. While we enjoyed Pompeii itself we found the "archaeologist" to be quite poor. She spent a lot of time stumbling over words or trying to find the right thing to say which may not have been an issue on a longer tour but on a short 2 hour tour quickly eats into the amount of information given. The guide also gave a lot of information about the political history of Europe in the time that Pompeii was rediscovered which had no real bearing on the tour itself and felt like more lost time. She also gave incorrect information about the volcanology of the eruption, she stated that Pompeii was buried by a falling ash cloud yet modern study suggests that the major cause of the burying was a series of pyroclastic surges. Also we spent a lot of time exploring smaller lesser known areas, we spent a good 10-15 minutes in the entrance at the Quadiporticus and then quite some time walking some of the smaller streets but then by the time we got to the Forum we were given a 1-2 minute explanation of the buildings aroudn the Forum from the centre and then she continued walking out of the the other side to end the tour with no time for us to explore the Forum area! Would happily be taken to Pompeii and back by this company but would likely just get an audio tour or do Pompeii ourselves next time as it felt like we being held back from fully exploring the site.

Great tour of Pompeii, but guides change frequently. Unlike Viking, there is no narration to and from ship to Pompeii and vice versa. Guides were fine, especially guide that led in through Pompeii. Tour began and ended at a cameo shop which housed the rest rooms.

Absolutely fabulous. The communication from the tour company was great, Marco was funny and kept us entertained on the mini bus to Pompeii. Had a little bit of wait for our guide but did a bit of shopping and had gelato (yum). Anna our tour guide was informative and funny. Walking around Pompeii, listening to the history and the preservation work being done was amazing. Best tour in Italy I have had.

A Day in Pompeii

Well organized Tour from Naples Cruise Port. We were shown to a ~20 passenger van for the trip. In addition to the several couples from our cruise ship, we picked up more passengers along the way and ended up with a full bus. This felt more than the advertised "small group." I also need to comment on the driver. He drove quickly and I felt unsafe at several points on both city and highway driving. The on-bus coordinator pointed out a few highlights along the way but she spoke rapidly in several languages which made her hard to understand. I was relieved when I overheard her tell another guest that we would have a different guide for the Archaeological Park at Pompeii. The on-site guide was great. He showed us most of the important places and artifacts in a lively and engaging way. My one complaint here is that the audio headsets did not work well and it was better to stand by the guide to hear him properly. Many tourist sites are hyped and don't live up to expectations. This was not true of Pompeii. It is as amazing as everyone says it is. It takes you back to a time 2000 years ago. A day in the life suddenly and completely unexpectedly terminated over a few hours. I could empathize with what those people must have been feeling. That this was the end of the world. And for many of them, it was. Go to Pompeii. It is worth your time and money.

Fix your bus!

If not for a very poorly maintained bus with an exposed seat belt apparatus which is sharp enough to tear material or skin and lack of working A.C on same, I would give this tour 5 stars. I did not sweat until the bus ride back! Our guide was wonderful. We showed a very long l line, and enjoyed an interesting, informative walk thru Pompeii. Our guide was very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. She kept us on a steady pace, without any feeling of being rushed.

Great guides but initial meet up miscommunicated

The guides both in the van and at Pompeii were great. Explanations were clear and thoughtful. Anna, an archeologist knew how to present information and show it visually at the same time. She was excellent. Giuseppe the van guide had to go out of his way to locate us because the initial instructions had us waiting in the incorrect location. He explained the history of Pompeii on our way there in three languages. Gennero was a fine driver keeping us safe.

Pros: inside Pompeii guide, Tomas was excellent. Site was a must see. Not far from cruise port; Cons: 12 adults and 3 kids packed on the small bus. Guide on bus did not speak English.

Not worth the money.

This tour was piecemealed together. Van we rode in was old and needed new shocks. Driver had music blasting. We waited for second pickup for twenty minutes. Met up with separate tour guide at Pompei who was just okay.

Pompeii was fascinating and Teresa was so informative and enthusiastic. We really enjoyed the tour. The guy escorting us in the van was not enthusiastic and even a little dismissive once we reached the site. We would definitely recommend the tour to friends, especially those who don’t want to spend the entire day on an excursion.

The city of Pompeii is very crowded but our guide had headphones for us to wear to hear her clearly. It was a lot of walking in the big site and the stones were uneven at times so I was happy to be wearing good shoes! But it was a fascinating place to visit!

Had to be at the meeting place at 8:15 for 8:30 pick up. We weren't picked up until 9! No explanation, no apology. Got to Pompeii, long long line to get our group inside. (That is skip the line??) Then inside the complex another group was added to ours, so there goes "small group"! There were over 30 of us, our guide was knowledgeable and spoke English well, the headphones worked fine. Wish he could have carried a flag however, with our large group and the hoards of people at the site, we almost lost him a few times. Actually when our small group reunited, two people never rejoined us and after at least 15 minutes of waiting, we just left them there. The girl emin charge of the bus should have been specific as to where the final meeting place would be located. She did really try to look for them, itstthe organization that was lacking. Don't pay extra money for a "small group"! And expect the ste to be just a zoo! Too bad.

The “skip-the-line” service is meant to minimize waiting time at the entrance, but on particularly busy days there can still be some delays due to security checks and high visitor volumes. Regarding the group size, we completely understand your frustration — a “small group” experience should feel more personal, and it sounds like in this case the organization did not meet expectations. Your feedback about clearer instructions, better coordination, and the use of a flag for easier visibility is extremely valuable, and we’ll make sure to pass it along to improve future services. Tom was an amazing tour guide and so funny! He was able to keep the group together and move along as needed. He had lots of great information and funny jokes to go along. My partner had a little heath issue during the Tom was great to help! I recommend this tour, it was one of our favorite things on our honeymoon.

The meet up and transport went very well. However the actual Pompei Tour Guide got very long winded in the beginning of the tour and got behind and started rushing us through the rest of the stops. I have been to Pompei before and had a guide that gave us a much better tour in same 2hr period.

We thoroughly enjoyed visiting and learning more about the ruins at Pompeii. Nunzia communicated well with us so we knew how to find the pick up location. Our guide was very knowledgeable. We had audio headsets which helped us to hear the guide when we were not right next to her. My only wish is that we had more time after the tour to enjoy some pizza and a drink. Thank you!

The Good and the Bad of the Day

This is a fantastic experience, though requires a lot of walking on uneven ground. Out guide Lio was amazing, so friendly, welcoming and happy to answer all questions that we had. He chatted with everyone and made you feel it was an individual tour and not a group tour. The site was extremely busy and it was very hot, so we would recommend a hat and also very comfortable, flat shoes due to the terrain. The price of the excursion was very good and great considering it includes pick-up and drop-off. There were however 2 down sides. We were picked up at the port of Naples, beside the cruise ship terminal. This was easy and Danielli was very friendly and welcoming. However, once on the coach, we had to go to the train station and waited in the minibus for around 30-40 minutes (very warm day), for another group. However, on the return journey, there was only one drop-off point, which was the cruise terminal. Unsure why this couldn't be a single location for pick-up, as it meant that we lost valuable time from our holiday, sitting around, waiting. The second issue was the driving of the minibus driver. Mostly he drove very fast and at one point, we had to go through a toll booth. There was 2 cars and a motorbike I'm front of him, he was driving very close. As the vehicles in front went through the toll, he sped up without notice and the barrier came down suddenly in front of him, causing him to brake erratically, we were all slammed forward and one passenger crashed off her seat and onto the floor. This was so very dangerous and somebody could have been seriously hurt. More care and attention should have been taken. Whilst I wanted to ensure that this was included in my review, I would still say that this tour is very good value for Morey.
