Luciano was an incredible guide. As an archaeologist his knowledge and insight of Herculaneum is outstanding. Learned so much you would not find any where else. Passionate speaker and tour was a good pace. Highly recommend.

Antonella, an Archeologist with an active dig in Pompeii, was a wealth of knowledge. No better guide! The tour was well paced and full of history and unique facts! Go to Pompeii for size but Herculaneum is best for lots of details and artifacts.

Excellent tour with Sara who guided us with energy, good knowledge and enthusiasm. Group size worked well. I can recommend

Fantastic experience and would definitely recommend Luciano as a guide.

Rorie_R, Mar 2026
Our guide, Luciano Lione was an authentic and entertaining guide. He was clearly a well educated guide and gave great value add as we moved through the tour.

A truly unique experience

Andrew_A, Mar 2026
This is a much smaller site than neighbouring Pompei, but it is very different in many ways. Because it is smaller it is a lot more manageable for people who are slightly older. The information shared by our guide was fascinating and the tour was small enough o ask questions. The tour guide was highly knowledgeable and very pleasant and Sara was very patience with us all. The facilities at erculano were slight limited and need more investment ie toilets, cash point etc but it is easy to get to by train especially. A truly unique experience.

Sarah did a great job of walking us through the history of the site and was super knowledgeable about everything we saw. I’d definitely recommend wandering around the site a little after the tour finishes as there were several points of interest that the tour couldn’t cover in the time we had. Definitely more manageable to wander by yourself than in Pompeii, thanks to the smaller size of the site. Definitely recommend!

Interesting tour but a bit hard to understand tour guide.

Diane_L, Mar 2026
Our tour guide though very knowledgeable was difficult to understand. He spoke broken English but did try very hard to clarify my questions.

Exceptional tour and guide

Amazing tour! Highly recommend!

I would give this more stars if I could. Our guide (Julia? Maybe Juliette?) was brilliant. She was incredibly well informed and really engaging. She was happy to be asked lots of questions and was really cheerful and just lovely to spend time with. The area is amazing, much smaller than Pompeii so you really only need 2-3 hours, but there is so much to see. The mosaics are amazing and the preserved wood and boat blew us away. I can't recommend this one enough. We had an amazing time and will remember it forever.

Visit to Herculaneum

Deborah_F, Feb 2026
Having Luciano (a trained archeologist) as a guide, enhanced the whole visit to Herculaneum for us. Luciano was able to passionately explain historical events, provide factual information about the city and the artefacts that were found there, and gave us a better understanding of the city and the people who lived in there at the time of the eruption.

Don’t miss this!

John_D, Feb 2026
Do not miss this tour! Our archeologist guide Michaele used his own working knowledge of the site plus his ability to weave in engineering and cultural history to create the individual and family stories to give us an amazing experience showing and explaining the fascinating details of life in Herculaneum. Thank you!

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Thank you so much for your enthusiastic words. We’re thrilled that Michele's expertise made your visit so memorable. We hope to welcome you again soon! Best,

Meh... an audio guide would have been better

William_K, Jan 2026
Meh guide ran overtime causing us to miss some things including time in the onsite museum. Long winded, would use the audio guide or another tour next time.

Response from Host, Feb 2026

Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that the timing of the tour didn’t work out as expected, we'll definitely talk this through with our team to understand what happened. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us. Kind regards,

Amazing guide to Heraculeneum

Amazing private tour. Very knowledgeable guide. So inspiring to learn about how people lived. Rained a bit.

A great tour

Heather_N, Jan 2026
Paulo was a wonderful guide! This was my 2nd tour with Viator (1st was Coliseum) and again, I wasn’t disappointed. We had a small group of 6, and Paulo was very informative about the history of Herculaneum. It was really interesting to learn all about the city. We saw 4 or 5 rich houses, a restaurant and the men’s and women’s bath houses. We learned about what archeologists believe life was like when the city was lively, etc. and overall it was a good tour. Paulo is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, and it shows. I chose not to see Pompei, and see Herculaneum instead. I’m not sure if it was the best choice or not. I did very much enjoy seeing the original frescos, tiled floors, and artifacts that were still in the city (and museum also included in the ticket fee).

Wonderful tour of Herculaneum

Josephine_M, Dec 2025
This was an exceptionally good tour. Our guide, Julia, was amazing. Her English was impeccable, and she spoke with great authority and passion about her work and experience in the development of the site. This was even better than our tour of Pompeii and we would strongly recommend her tour!

Worth the time and money! Thank you Paulo

Our guide Paulo met us on time as expected and took our small group on an amazing tour of the site. He gave us amazing insight into the history and features of the buried city. No paper map or audio guide could compare to this type of access. Highly recommend.

Perfect experience. Book it!

We had such a great time at Herculaneum with our guide Luciano. What a lovely man- he was very entertaining and funny but also very knowledgeable about the site and he did a great job of showing us the highlights and telling us lots of interesting details/ pointing out stuff that we’d definitely have missed if we’d been on our own. Our group wasn’t a huge one, but the earpieces worked really well and Luciano made sure that everyone could see and hear everything clearly.

Herculaneum tour rocks!

Peter_S, Oct 2025
Our Herculaneum 2 hour tour with guide Luciano Leone was fabulous! Luciano is entertaining, expert and enthusiastic. He carries with him a book of resources he shows the groups he leads, including images he has created expertly himself, showing how the buildings you are viewing on the tour would have looked 2,000 years ago. This really helps bring this ancient site to life. This additional effort from Luciano makes him stand out beyond other tour leaders in our experience.

Response from Host, Nov 2025

Dear Guest, Thank you sincerely for your wonderful and detailed review. We are truly delighted to hear that your two-hour tour of Herculaneum with archaeologist Luciano Leone was such a memorable experience. His enthusiasm, expertise, and creative approach — particularly his use of visual reconstructions to illustrate how the ancient city once appeared — make his tours both unique and deeply engaging. It is always rewarding to know that our guests appreciate the dedication and passion our guides bring to their work. Luciano’s ability to combine scholarly insight with an entertaining and vivid presentation of the past is precisely what makes Askos Tours experiences so special.
