1 Day in Fort Lauderdale for First Timers

Curated by Margot Bigga former resident of India who has spent a ton of time in Goa, often for weeks on end.

The first time I visited Fort Lauderdale, I could instantly see why it's called the "Venice of America," with its canals snaking between lavish homes and massive yachts. While that visit was focused on beach time and the nightlife scene, I've found new things to explore in this beachside city every time I return.

Its location near the Everglades means you'll have a chance to see lots of wildlife including dolphins, manatees, and my favorite pink bird, the roseate spoonbill. Water sports are particular favorite and you can't pass up an afternoon or two at the beach as the water stays warm year-round. Plus, when you're ready to eat, there are plenty of low-key beachfront spots serving up seafood of every kind.

It's almost always warm and humid but be prepared for afternoon thunderstorms.

If you only have time for one thing, get out on the water to explore the canals.

Morning

The best way to get around Fort Lauderdale is via the canals along the Intracoastal Waterway, as you can avoid the hassle of driving and parking. This hop-on-hop-off water taxi is more than just a means of transport; the guide provides commentary about the area while you cruise. You can learn who owns the mansions and yachts you'll see along the way and get tips for activities and restaurants. Get off at Las Olas Boulevard for some morning shopping or feed the tarpon from the dock at 15th Street Fisheries.

Afternoon

Hop off the water taxi at Esplanade Park to join a guided Segway tour of Fort Lauderdale's Arts and Entertainment District. You'll glide along the Riverwalk on your way to the Museum of Discovery and Science as your guide points out boutique shops, restaurants, and other points of interest along the way. Another stop along the way is Port Everglades, one of the busiest cruise ports in the world, ending at the beachfront, meaning you can see lots of the city in a short amount of time.

Night

Round out your day with even more adventure, head 30 minutes to Sawgrass Recreation Park for an evening airboat tour of the Everglades. You'll zip through the grassy waterways at speeds of up to 40 mph (64 kph). The nighttime hours are a great time of day to visit this unique ecosystem as you'll hear the sounds of nocturnal creatures. (And if you spot a pair of red glowing circles, it's likely an alligator!)
