1 Day in Austin for First Timers

Curated by Kate Lowetha writer who will never pass up an opportunity to see live music in Austin.

As a live music lover and foodie, I am always up for a visit to Austin. I could easily spend my days walking the city looking for colorful murals, stopping at food trucks, and then ending the day watching the bats at the Congress Avenue Bridge before heading to Sixth Street for some live music that goes until the wee hours of the morning.

When you have one day in Austin, you'll have plenty of time to visit the state capitol building and other top spots, and if you're looking for somewhere to cool off from the heat, I recommend a swim at Zilker Park or an afternoon at the Bullock Museum.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a stop at the Congress Avenue Bridge on a hot summer night.

The winters are typically mild in Austin, with sweltering summers.

Morning

Austin is packed with interesting spots like the Austin Paramount Theatre and the Barton Springs swimming hole in Zilker Park. The best way to make the most of your visit to Austin is on a guided tour. There are walking tours, bike tours, and tours in air-conditioned vans, all with local guides ready to point out the capitol building and interesting murals along the way. Some even combine the trip with a visit to the Texas Hill Country.

Night

Nights in Austin are a great time to experience why Austin is known as the "live music capital of the world." Head to Sixth Street to check out the scene at Pete's Dueling Piano Bar or Maggie Mae's. If you want to leave the location to the experts, book a live music or pub crawl, and you'll get to make some new friends and visit a few establishments.
