Terrible driver

Our adventure and frustration began at 9:00 a.m. when Filipe was supposed to pick us up at our hotel. Instead, he called and said he was running late and would arrive in 35 minutes. He finally arrived at 10:00 a.m. He told us he wasn’t supposed to do this tour and was not feeling well. Later in the day he told us he had stayed up too late and overslept. The van was filthy and empty or partially used bottles of water were mixed in with unopened bottles of water. On the drive to Sintra, Filipe talked about a range of topics to include his sister’s extreme political views, his wife and their divorce when she wouldn’t quit her job after having a baby. He also told us that ALL women just want to stay home and have babies but are pressured by society to have careers. This was after we told him we had wonderful fulfilling careers and had just retired. We also told him we never wanted or had any children. He also talked about his sexual prowess. Ick. We got to Pena Place a little late for our timed ticket but were fortunate to be allowed in. Throughout the day when we were dropped off at a site, Filipe would tell us how long we had and to call him when we were ready. We made sure to be ready at the agreed upon time because we were already an hour behind schedule and wanted to make sure we saw everything. Filipe never picked the phone up when I called on WhatsApp (as he suggested) and I would have to call him on my phone and text him pictures of exactly where we were. He still wouldn’t answer but would call back after a few minutes. He would always tell us he was 2 to 5 minutes away but would still take 10 to 20 minutes to pick us up. Each time he picked us up he would be scattered and frankly a bit erratic in his driving and in his speech. By the time we got to Cabo da Roca, it was 3:45 p.m. and the sun was starting to set. I told Filipe I just wanted a quick picture and we could go (I was gone 4 minutes). He said he had to use the bathroom and didn’t return to the van for 22 minutes. At this point we told Filipe that we just wanted to go back to our hotel in Lisbon, but he decided to take us to Cascais anyway. Once there, Filipe told us he wanted us to walk around and have dinner, but we really weren’t sure he would pick us back up. We politely declined and again told him we just wanted to go back to Lisbon. Just outside Cascais, less than an hour since his last “bathroom break”, Filipe stopped at a gas station and disappeared for almost 20 minutes. At this point we contemplated calling an Uber to take us back to Lisbon, but none were close. Instead, we told Filipe to drop us at the Timeout Market which was about 20 minutes closer than our hotel with the evening traffic. Filipe then started talking about a few bad reviews he got on Viator because the clients were scammers and wanted a free trip. To be clear, we are not asking for a refund or a discount. We got to see some beautiful places, but quite honestly, there were times in the van with Filipe that we didn’t feel safe.

Filipe had informed us of his health concerns and requested a replacement driver in advance. However, due to the tight timeline leading up to the trip, we were unable to fulfill this request. In an effort to avoid a last-minute cancellation and given the circumstances, Filipe decided to proceed with the trip despite his health issues. We also wish to address concerns regarding the van route. This is the first instance in which a customer has expressed insecurity about this. Please be assured that the route is rigorously monitored using GPS, and our staff is fully committed to executing the established plan without deviation. We have implemented all necessary safety measures to guarantee a secure experience for our clients, and we stand by the effectiveness of our protocols. Filipe has provided a response to the feedback received, stating: "It was never my intention to criticize your life choices. I did not use any language that could be deemed inappropriate, nor did I address any sensitive matters. Conversations during tours can cover a variety of topics, but I strive to maintain appropriateness in all discussions. I regret if you felt offended at any point during our interaction. Once again, I sincerely apologize for any discomfort caused. Please accept my most sincere apologies." The absolute best tour of the castles and coast!

Jorge was the BEST. He took us on a full-day tour from Lisboa to all the big touristy places on the coast we wanted to hit on our last day in Portugal. He gave us amazing tips at each place, helped us buy tickets for Pena Palace (we legit walked right in), knew every detail of every place. He made lunch reservations for us at a neat little restaurant in Sintra and even recommended a delicious dish. The weather was somewhat uncooperative but he was prepared with umbrellas and waited for us at the front of every site. He even was spot on with how long it would take to get through each place. We never once felt rushed. We saw every single thing we wanted to see. The car was clean and comfortable and his driving was second to none. He told us he wanted us to leave Portugal “wanting to come back again” and that’s exactly right. When we do, we will make sure to book our tours with Jorge. Absolutely do this tour!! You will NOT regret it. Thank you so much Jorge for making our trip so memorable!

Sintra, Capo Da Roca and Cascais are very beautiful and deserve a visit. The driver/ guide Philip was very overwhelmed with the program. He did his best to show us everything but we felt being rushed. He kept complaining about Traffic and parking etc. The van was very old and not well maintained. Overall, we enjoyed the trip but we could have enjoyed it more without hearing Philip complaining all the time.

Fue una experiencia maravillosa, sobre todo contar con un chofer como el Sr. Jorge, amable, complaciente, fue transmitiendonos su conocimiento de cada lugar visitado, realmente uno mas de la familia, asi lo sentimos. Conocer estas ciudades y su historia , sus hermosas vistas, deleitar sus tipicas comidas, sus vinos y sus dulces en Periquita fue fabuloso.
