Great way to get a small taste of the Highlands and the famous Laugavegur trail.

Nalani_A, Sep 2026
Great small bus trip into the Icelandic Highlands to Landmannalauger, the beginning of the famed Laugavegur trail. This guided hike takes you on the first few kilometers of the Laugavegur overlooking insanely beautiful rhyolite mountains and then up to a thermal feature. It then loops back around on a different trail thru an ancient lava field and along a small glacial river back to Landmannalauger. There is a natural hotsprings at Landmannalauger where we had about 45 minutes at the end of the hike to enjoy. Overall the hike was about 6-7 km (3.5-4.5 miles) with a 300m (1000 ft) elevation gain and loss, much of it over rock. It is a moderately strenuous hike but doable by anyone with decent balance and in reasonably good condition. I'm 67, my traveling companion is 75 and we're in good shape for our age. The ride in is very bumpy so this might not be the trip if you have serious back problems. Wear hiking boots or trail runners. Dress in layers and bring a rain coat. I used trekking poles which were very helpful on the rocky steps and trail. Bring a water bottle and lunch because it's an all day trip from Reykjavik. There are bathrooms, showers and a changing area at Landmannalauger as well as the "Mountain Bus" that sells basic supplies and food (candy bars, chips, nuts, etc.) I solo hiked the entire Laugavegur three years ago and highly recommend this trip as a way to get a small taste of the Highlands and the Laugavegur trail.

Tour and Hike at Lanmannalaugar

This is a really beautiful part of the country. The path to the campsite and the trail is like a lunar landscape, so best if one takes this tour. It’s a winding dirt road and one has to go over streams, so let the experts deal with that. Once at the base camp, there are toilets and showers. Our guide, Carmen, was fantastic. She loves the outdoors, knows the range and the local lore, and kept us going at a brisk pace. You can climb up to 5 levels (our group did 3). The scenery is gorgeous. Cannot beat Mother Nature. We lucked out with no rain, and were really glad we went with Nordur Travel.
