Itinerary

Begin with a pickup from your hotel in Reykjavik and travel by climate-controlled minibus to the Golden Circle, a 186-mile (300-km) scenic loop that circles the countryside around the capital.

Stop first at the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Thingvellir National Park, notable as the site of the world’s longest-running parliament and the point where the tectonic plates of Europe and North America meet.

Stretch your legs with a stroll, then drive to Lake Thingvallavatn. Head into the snorkel center to get changed and pick up your equipment. Then, following a safety briefing, enter the crystalline waters with the guide.

Drift between the two continents and marvel at the neon-green seaweed and other underwater sights. The fissure’s visibility is renowned, and you can even see down to the lava fields, some 328 feet (100 meters) below.

Back on dry land, warm up with hot chocolate and sit down to lunch (own expense). Then, depart for Haukadalur, a geothermal valley studded with geysers and hot springs. Make a photo stop at Geysir, one of the area’s most famous highlights, before stopping at nearby Gulfoss.

Your tour then concludes with a drop-off in Reykjavik.

Tour operators and site overwhelmed by popularity

Brooke_K, Jul 2025
Site far too busy. Unique experience but ruined by the very people who came to enjoy it. There is one place to get in the water for everyone, so there was a long line, which took over an HOUR standing in full dry suit regalia. The float itself took less than 15 minutes. They said you could drink the water, but there were so many people swimming and kicking up debris it was full of particles. Guide tried to leave me with a fogged up mask in her haste to get us in the water until I insisted on cleaning it again.

Dry Suit Provided Didn’t Fit

Alissa_C, May 2025
This was supposed to be a bucket list adventure, but unfortunately, the experience was ruined by improper gear. Myself and another woman (both around 5'3") were given dry suits far too big for us. The staff attempted to shorten the legs with rubber bands so our flippers would stay on, but once I got in the water, that solution failed. My feet kept slipping out of the flippers, making it impossible to kick properly. Using my arms which we were instructed not to do, was the only way I could move. Doing so caused water to enter my suit. The instructor ultimately had to drag me and the other woman to the end, which resulted in water entering my snorkel and mouth. It was a stressful, frustrating experience rather than an enjoyable one. I was soaked by the end but thankfully, I had dry clothes to change into in their heated van. Snorkeling was the first stop of this golden circle tour and being wet and cold in Iceland is risky. 2 star because my boyfriend who’s suit fit had a great time. The rest of the golden circle tour was good. After this experience I saw there are other companies that ask for your height and weight to have a proper size suit on hand for your tour. please look for one that does this or use this knowledge to ensure you enter the water in a properly fitting dry suit.

just disappointed since he never got to go.

I have to say, I am extremely disappointed in this tour's coordination as my son was not able to meet up with them at the meeting point as it was confusing. My son took four other tours through Viator while in Iceland and they all went off without issue. The other providers communicated upfront and he was able to meet up with no issue at the designated spot. Unfortunately Arctic Adventures was not at the same caliber as the others. They did not communicate up front on the location as the other tour companies did. Although we received multiple emails before the tour with advertisements instead of valid information. My son went to the address from the original sign up, but it did not say bus stop #9. The local bus drivers had never heard of a bus stop #9. Tour companies are supposed to make it easy in a foreign country for tourists and Arctic Adventures made it more difficult and stressful. The email communication he received when they could not find him said we are waiting at bus stop #9. No address was provided even in that email. His phone was having coverage issues, so he did not get any calls. As is normal sometimes for travelers and should be expected by the company. He did reach out to the company on two occasions (only once did he reach someone). And he was told he had to rent a car to catch up with the bus. What would he have done with the car at a random location? They made no effort to help him get where he needed to be, even at additional cost. No suggestions of a taxi, bus, or anything other than to rent a car. Basically no help was provided at all. This was his last day in Iceland and it ended on a low note. it is just very disappointing and they would not even offer a credit or refund. Just repeated that he did not show up at the location. Just disappointing. Make sure if you book this tour you know exactly where the stop is located as they do not pick up at all hotels/hostels.

Awesome.... but....

Brian_G, Jan 2023
This is a tough one for me to evaluate and score. Parts were awesome and not so awesome. First - with regard to the size restrictions for snorkeling - especially in the winter - TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY My girlfriend and I went to Iceland for Christmas and booked this tour. One of the primary reasons we picked it was that it hit the Golden Circle AND Silfra. Dollar for the money it was a pretty good deal. Pickup: The bus was running a bit late., but did show up at the pickup point. Not sure if there was issue with the bus or a prior pickup. It was not a minibus but closer to a full-sized charter bus. There are no on-board restrooms which is fine as you are on less than 2 hours. Silfra: There are no changing facilities at Silfra and you change in the parking lot, basically stripping down to long underwear and a pair of socks to get in a fleece-like jumpsuit. Temps were approximately 13F wind chill well under. Recommend wearing a hat and mittens/gloves until the last minute. Your clothes go into an operator provided dry bag for your coat, snow pants/outer pants. Recommend that a FULL replacement of your under layers be packed in a personal dry bag inside the big one provided by the operator in the case that your dry suit leaks. Recommend that you bring a separate personally owned dry bag for your boots as they should go in last with your gloves/mittens and you do not want snow from the boots to drip down on your coat. Personally owned dry bags can be purchased on Amazon. After putting on the fleece jumpsuit (has no footies so you will still be in your own shoes). You begin putting on a dry suit. At this point boots come off. The dry suit has thing rubber sleeving at the wrists and kneck. You will want to make sure it is snug to the point of being a little uncomfortable. This is what prevents the water from entering the suit. My girlfriend is very petite and the wrists and neck were not tight enough. Rubber bands were used on the wrists and a "choker" was used at the neck. She experienced leaking at both the wrists and neck. (More on that later) Prep and walking to the platform where you enter the fissure are probably as long if not longer than the 30 minutes you spend in the fissure. The staff that got you prepped were super nice. Once in the fissure, you do a quick safety procedure and you're off. There is a point at which you can decide to go back. The water is crystal clear and it is almost like you are flying over a canyon. The suit keeps you floating and the current keeps you moving. There are no fish in the fissure (they do not go there probably because the temperature is a steady 33-34F). There are some fairly shallow parts but it was really cool to do. The operators take photos of your group as you move through the fissure. Your head and hands do get wet. I was worried that my head would get overly cold buy it wasn't. a big deal At the end there is another platform that you exit. It was cold enough the suits froze up on the walk back to the parking lot. They had to thaw us out to get us out of the suit. As I mentioned, my girlfriend's suit leaked (slow leak not like it rushed in but all clothing inside was wet). After removing the dry suit and fleece jumper she immediately put her coat on over her wet clothing - not the wisest choice as the inside of her coat ended up wet. This is why I recommend that you bring a full replacement of clothing for what you wear inside the fleece jumper. I on the other hand, remained dry as could be inside the dry suit. At the.end you get a link to the pictures to download them at your leisure. Geyser: The area has a building with several shops and dining options across the street from the geyser. My girlfriend bought new clothing here to replace the wet. The geyser is across the street and goes off every five minutes. There are number of steaming pools around. Pictures are above. Silfoss: Is a big waterfall in a canyon. There is both a lower observation and an upper. I really liked it. The upper also has shops and restaurants in a single building similar to geyser. The last part is that our tour bus had some issue with the heat. We basically stayed bundled up and were fine. A couple of the other folks were getting pretty feisty over it. Luckily by then we had replaced all of my girlfriend's clothing. Conclusion: The sites were all awesome and hitting the Golden Circle and Silfra in a single day was perfect for our schedule. I wish we had a little better understanding of the dressing process at Silfra and wish that we did a better job getting my girlfriend into completely dry clothes. Our guide as Silfra (Valerio) was AWESOME! The bus situation was what it was but we didn't let it ruin our day.

This experience cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world! The guide was wonderfully understanding of what a newbie to snorkeling needs. The water was pristine and you could see to the bottom of 42 meters! Took my breath away! Wear tight clothes, such as long underwear and wool socks. You only wear one layer under the dry suit. Your hands get a bit cold , but not that uncomfortable. Everything else except my long hair stayed dry. So glad I did this!

This tour was an amazing way to see the Golden Circle highlights. Our small group meant we could maximize our time at each stop. The highlight was definitely the snorkeling. I highly recommend filling your water bottle up with that crystal clear, delicious water before getting back in the van. You will enjoy every sip on the ride home!

ANI_S, Feb 2018
The trip was Good.. the changes I would want is a better job at Pickup - I had to wait for nearly 80 mins Not easy when you have to wait at the pick up point in cold snow and sometimes it was snowing too.. plus the trip says that you MUST be there by 830 AM.. and they have the luxury to pick u up as late as 90 MINS.. that is QUITE Sad. Plus - the time at the main attractions was RUSHED.. like 1 hour at the Gyizer place - to view.. eat.. have a bio break etc etc. Given a choice I would want to change these two things for sure and so letting you know in advance.

This tour is a must do. The sites on the Golden Circle are worth a visit, but the highlight was snorkeling through the Silfra fissure. It was definitely one of the most memorable parts of our trip to Iceland. Don't let the freezing water deter you, as you are given adequate gear. So worth it!

Shushu C, Mar 2017
This tour was a bit disorganized because they told us at first that snorkeling was in the morning, but ended up being later so we wasted around 2 hours in transport. The guide also had issues instructing us where parking was going to be so definitely communication could've been better. The sights were good and snorkeling was very cool but as a start to the iceland experience I thought it was ok. I highly recommend going out south and east as all the waterfalls/mountains/volcano/glacier views are around there.

This was a great experience. The Golden Circle tour was very nice, as expected. But the gem is the experience to snorkel the Silfra Fissure. Yes, the water is just above freezing all year round, but you are safe and warm in the dry suit they provide. In fact, the most challenging part was getting into that thing. You are missing out if you travel all the way to Iceland and don't take advantage of this opportunity. Yanis, our tour guide was very informative, friendly, and accomodating. Your enjoyment and safety are his top priorities.

Erika G, Jan 2017
This experience is arguably the coolest thing I have ever done! I thought I would freeze to death in glacier water at about 30 degrees F with windchill in January but you wear your own thermal layers before they put you in a snowsuit/onesie thing and then a drysuit. Your entire body stayed warm and dry except your hands and head that were in neoprene gloves/hood. The water was crystal clear and if any got into your snorkel you can drink it because it's some of the freshest in the world. The guides were really friendly and took photos that were available for purchase afterwards. The part of the description about snorkeling between two tectonic plates was a tad misleading - I thought the silfra fissure was literally the two plates and you would be directly between them but they're actually several miles apart. Still really fun. The rest of the golden circle tour was great as well! Don't miss out on the snorkeling part.

With just 4-5 hours of sunlight in winter, timing is everything. We started the tour 1.5 hrs late which means all activities towards the end were competed with little or no sunlight. While the snorkeling was fantastic, It was more like going through the motions for other activities. The last stop was cancelled because the parliament house was closed and in complete darkness by the time we got there. We started with a smaller bus and had to move to a bigger one since the company miscalculated the number of passengers. This had the potential to be a great experience if the tour departed on time.

This was really fun! The only thing was I was saving my pictures for later. People started getting out and I thought that we were going to explore a different area but nope that was the end of the tour! I was shocked and thought I was overcharged for this tour! The only part that made this worth it was the optional cliff jumping afterwards! Not everyone did it but I did it twice! That was pretty awesome! I'd say do the scuba dive one. I'm sure it's better. The snorkel was different but it was really short. Like 1/2 hour long.
