This was my first time riding a horse. Despite the cold and wet weather, I will never forget this experience. The staff members are friendly, kind, helpful, and patient. The horses are very well trained and well tempered, all while having their own little personalities, which is super cute and fun. The landscape is cool. Overall, I’d love to do this again.

Riding an Icelandic horse through the forest and red rock lava field was an an amazing experience! I got to see landscape I never would have seen from a driving. Our guide, Claudia, was awesome and so knowledgeable about the area, the horses gentle and Tölting through the fields was so much fun! Their warm suits provided kept me warm and I had merino wool layers underneath. Simply beautiful experience.

Everything you could need is available such as hats, gloves and riding gear! The views are beautiful!

this experience was truly amazing!! our tour guides answered any and all questions we had and were very attentive. loved this so much

I have zero experience riding horses, so I was a little nervous leading up to this experience. The girls leading the tour were great and immediately put my mind at ease! They explained everything we needed to know about the horses and how to hold the reins. The horses were calm and knew where to walk without much direction. The scenery was beautiful, it was really cool to walk through the lava fields and even try the tolt! I definitely would recommend this experience if you’ve never ridden a horse before. Pick up & drop off made everything very convenient as well.

Amazing experience would definitely recommend. Dress warm and padded but Amazing over all. Pick up with prompt and clear. Not only would I recommend it I did to someone I meet the following day and she went and enjoyed it too.

Claudia was very friendly and helpful. In spite of a thunder storm, she remained cheerful and informative, and we enjoyed the trip. Horses were well behaved and the walk was enjoyable. We got a bad day for it weather-wise so couldnt give above 4 stars. Certainly recommend wearing layers and water-proof boots!

This experience was truly special! We had a small group of about 10-12 people and it was a perfect size. The guides were very encouraging and fun to talk too. I truly appreciated their photography skills and patience. I would recommend this tour over the other larger ones offered in Iceland. Definitely dress warm if you are going in the winter, bring gloves and a hat without a pom pom to fit under the helmet, and ensure your pockets zip for your phone as you cannot bring bags.

Wonderful horses and well run operation. Our guides were friendly and helpful. Enjoyed the opportunity for the horses to tolt. Very much enjoyed the tour and would highly recommend!

Great from start to end. Had optional pickup. Was contacted on the morning to confirm the time and location. Had a short drive to the stables, once arrived, everything was explained, had the option of using overalls if required. But the day was dry and crisp so we did not need these. Helmets were then fitted and then we got to go out to the horses. All horses are will looked after. The guides match you to a particular horse and give full instructions if you have never ridden before. Photos are not allowed during, but there is a stop halfway, where one of the guides will take plenty photos of you and your group. The option is then given for those a little nervous to take an easier route or you can carry on where you get the option to trot few times. The scenery on route is stunning. Once back, there is Tea, coffee or hot chocolate waiting to warm up. Again, we had the transfer back and were dropped off at the hotel...The guides are brilliant throughout, helping anyone who requires a little reassurance. If doing this during winter months, hats (with no bobble) and gloves are a must! Some people turned up without either! You can buy from them if you do accidentally forget.

A beautiful experience. If you've ever riden a different horse the Icelandic horses are so smooth to ride - it's worth the experience. We loved it.
They gave us suits to put on over our clothes to help us keep warm and helmets. There was the chance to try the tolt gait or the option to just keep walking.

Great experience. Very helpful and friendly staff. Excellent opportunity to see the wonderful landscape of Iceland on the majestic Icelandic horse

I had a wonderful time. The horses were very calm and easy to ride. I love that I was able to experience the gate, tölt. It was awesome. The red rocks were lovely too.

This was amazing. It was the first time I rode a horse and it was so fun and easy. I would definitely sign up and go even if it means you would go by yourself.

This tour is located near Reykjavik, which was convenient. Unfortunately it was rainy, yet, they provided wet weather gear. The horses were lovely! My husband has never ridden a horse and this was a easy and gentle ride down a path through the mossy lava fields. They offered tea and coffee to warm up afterwards.

Absolutely brilliant, friendly animals suitable for beginners and experts alike. The guides were really friendly and very helpful, they offer winter suits to help keep warm recommend using them. Wear good socks to keep your feet warm. Thank you Claudia.

The tour guides were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. We had a range from tipping adults to old and the ride was well suited for all ages. Beautiful view. Would love to come back and do it again in the summer.

It was fantastic! Dress warm! Warmer than you foresee in the weather forecast, it will be beautiful but super windy. Get ski gloves if you have, can be wet. I was lucky to wear wet/windproof on top of my ski suit. But I could feel that other people from the group were freezing. Luckily they provide warm drinks afterwards. Guides are super cute and knowledgeable at the same time. They were very attentive. And I really loved spending time with the driver who was there for our transfer. She is the Icelander one in the team. I loved that she was proud of her country and explaining a lot of details

Great experience! DRESS WARM if you go during the winter time. The views were spectacular and the tour guides were lovely and very informative. Worth every penny.

I booked this horseback riding tour after doing quite a bit of research and reading many reviews. We chose the morning tour on the day we arrived. There was a light layer of snow on the ground, and the trails were quite icy. Unfortunately, the horse I was paired with wasn’t a good fit for me, or anyone, honestly.
During the two-hour ride, the horse bit another horse (the guide said this was normal), bucked and kicked a horse behind us, and at one point began moving around unpredictably. I was told by the guide to loosen the reins until it calmed down. Several horses struggled with footing due to the icy conditions, and at one point, my horse lost balance on both front legs and nearly fell to its knees. I was panicked, thinking we might go down completely. The guide simply said, “You handled it well.”
While the scenery was undeniably beautiful, the ride itself felt stressful rather than enjoyable. I’d recommend being mindful of the season and weather conditions when booking this tour. Our tour was the end of October.

Nice trails and beautiful horses! Lots of opportunities to experience the tolt, which was wonderful!
Christine_K, Oct 2025
All arrangements, pickup and dropoff went smoothly. A short drive to the stables from Reykjavik. The horses were well trained. It took a while to get everyone outfitted, mounted and adjusted because our group was fairly large. The ride itself was so much fun! We were able to tolt several times, which was great! The guides took many photos at the lava rocks from different angles, using our phones, so I have good pictures. I would recommend!

I was very conveniently sited to Reykjavík and we especially appreciated the pick up and return
The Horses were a delight

This was excellent! Horses were very good, they catered to everyone’s riding abilities. People were very friendly and helpful. Scenery was beautiful! Definitely recommend this!!! They picked us up at hotel and delivered us back. It was super easy.

My first experience riding a horse by myself. The crew are very helpful and making sure that we are all safe throughout the whole session and comfortable.

I was fairly nervous doing this as I have never ridden a horse before but the team at Solhestar is incredible! They know their horses so well and pair up people accordingly to experience. Safety and riding tips are not only given at the beginning but the instruction continues throughout the ride (very useful when going up and down). They also made sure to come up to those who were feeling unsteady or seemed uncomfortable. All those that wanted even got to experience tolt (a gait specific to Icelandic horses) at varying speeds! I love that they helped me feel so at ease, it seemed natural and I didn’t hesitate getting photos or videos
Icelandic horses are iconic and I’m so glad I did this activity (one of the most amazing things I’ve done in Iceland!). Spirit was definitely feisty as his name suggests but was also very responsive even with this being my first time on any horse
Note that there are jackets, pants and riding boots available to make the ride even more enjoyable - I suggest you wear them. We had rain, sleet, sun and rainbows on our ride
