We had an amazing time with Jayce as our tour guide. She obviously loves Lake Powell and the Antelope canyon. Jayce was so knowledgeable about the area and imparted so many interesting facts. The kayak part of the tour was easier on the way to the canyon than the way back. Having SOME knowledge about how to kayak would be best. I didn’t do a great job of helping my husband paddle, but we did manage. The hike was really cool and beautiful. We took the later tour, so it was quiet, peaceful and serene. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour!

We originally booked for 1pm, but last night he requested us to arrive at 10am, reducing the time from the original 4 hours to 3 and a half hours. We are three hours away from our destination, and today the weather is not good and it's raining. The navigation gave us the wrong address, and we called him to tell him that we arrived at 10:40 in the end. It's true that we were late. We ended up kayaking in half an hour. We talked for half a day but couldn't communicate. Not to mention taking us to Hiking, even the most basic kayaking is just a little bit of time. Even if it takes two hours, we still acknowledge it. This Christmas has been so disappointing.

Dear valued customer, we are sorry that you felt this experience was under valued. We reached out to you right after the reservation was made to make sure you were okay with an adjustment in scheduling because we found out you were beginning level kayakers and we felt it was best to adjust the tour to a private Paddle Only, because a Paddle and Hike is 8 miles long. We would like to tell you how long we did kayak as we went out 30 plus minutes we kayaked you away from shore and then turned around to go back. From shoreline and out and back it was a total of 75 minutes because of unloading and loading plus the 20 minutes of safety and instruction before launching. We want to clarify your time starts when instructions of the paddle are given on land. We would like to express our apologies for this situation however the process was difficult for us because we were talking to a 10 year old due to adult language barriers. We adjusted your tour to a private tour and a kayak only because you were all first time kayakers and arrived an hour after you said you would. We did the very best we could with this reservation and discounted you to the 2 hour event but it was a private tour that was completely focused on just your reservation. We blocked out the morning schedule for you and upgraded you from a group paddle and hike to a private paddle only because we also knew 5 miles of kayaking was going to be too much for beginner adults with beginner children in tandems. So once you told us this was your first time ever trying kayaking we were focused on how to make this the best experience we could for you without pushing you too far. 5 miles is a long journey for a first time kayaker, most get exhausted by 3 miles on their own not to mention if they are paddling kids in the boat too. The extra weight and limited power of young kayakers makes it difficult for first time adults. We ask about everyones swimming skills when dealing with first timers so we can understand who’s familiar with moving across water for 5 miles and what is too much distance for the first experience. We took amazing pictures for you, taught you the fundamentals of kayaking and gave you a complete private tour that was adjusted to your ability. Thank you for the opportunity to share this information with you. We had a wonderful day

Highly recommended! Sean was an amazing guide and knew a lot of information about the land and canyon. Was part informational and part physical. The hike and paddle were amazing.

Honestly this is probably the most beautiful place I’ve ever kayaked. The experience was exactly as shown in the pictures. It was magical. the calm lake reflects the canyons and the lake felt like a mirror. One of those experience that make you wonder at how beautiful nature can be.
The reason I’m giving 3 stars, however, is because I could have had the same experience just renting kayaks and our guide didn’t add any value. I have to also note that our guide was new and very young and was probably just learning the trade. They weren’t very knowledgeable and kind of just came along. Also I must say that the hike after kayaking one way was super super long (probably 8 miles both ways). So kayaking ~3 miles and then hike 5 miles And then kayaking back 3 miles - it’s a massive workout.
That said, I still recommend this.

We apologize for any underwhelming service provided by our young guide as the original founder was underwhelmed by his inability to make a complete commitment towards his training when he was given ample opportunity to learn and train with a former Major League Baseball player and extremely knowledgeable mentor. It was hard to watch and see the lack of respect and professionalism from him and his mother. Paddle Express is sorry for the lack of seriousness from the young staff.

We are disappointed in Jasey, the owner if the Paddle Express Tours.
We made a mistake when booking the group tour. We completely miscalculated the travel time (we thought it was 30min, but it was 3h). We called Jasey, to explain and asked if we could reschedule to a later time.
She said:" there are no later group tours, but you can book an individual tour, let me call you back."
We decided to make the drive, but after that she did not respond to emails nor did she pick up here phone.
So we lost our money, but also half a travel day.
Very disappointing!
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Yes very disappointed indeed as the original founder worked so hard only to get the excuses daily. They were stacking so high the whole thing collapsed.

Great experience! Great guide in Sean!
He was very informative and interesting. Beautiful scenery!
A great value.
Thomas_G, Nov 2025
Our guide Sean was great. He was very knowledgeable about the history of Lake Powell and the surrounding areas.
Melinda_D, Oct 2025
I've been on several kayak/hike trips solo and this one is one of my top enjoyable ones. The guide is very knowledgeable so ask questions and he will answer. The hiking trip was also fun went through barefoot crawled around on the canyon walls and had more history lesson. Not sure how this trip could ever have a bad review!
Khrystyna_P, Oct 2025
The kayaking trip and the guide were excellent! Incredible views and atmosphere. We were late and they waited for us. The only downside is that your trip may be rescheduled to other times, I don't know why, so plan to have the whole day free.
Ah_T, Oct 2025
I would never recommend this company to anyone! This guy canceled the tour because he didn’t have enough people booking the trip! I didn’t know it was canceled until an hour before the tour while I was waiting at the boat launch! I spent the entire morning from 7am-9:30 am calling both phone numbers! No answer on either phone! Finally I texted him to let him know I was waiting at the boat launch and that was when he text back stating he canceled because not enough people confirmed the booking! On the cancellation email it stated he canceled because of bad weather! Sorry to say the sun was out and it was a gorgeous 70 degrees outside with not a cloud in the sky! The other tour companies were leaving left and right! So DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY! You can see from my picture the weather was gorgeous! This picture if about 10 minutes away from the boat launch! Come on people be responsible business owners!

The original founder completely agrees, thank you for sharing. He’s worked himself into the ground for her and her “family staff” only for them to purposely collapse the product and collude with her old company after a coercive and hostile takeover. It’s very disappointing after years of work to see the excuses and the lack of accountability but it was calculated to have the establishment collapse for leverage that otherwise would not be. The coercive and hostile takeover is truly unprofessional and Paddle Express apologizes for not doing background checks prior to a joint venture. You were being ignored by Jasey who also updated the website and post untrue bios about her staff saying her daughter Ember is a fantastic reservation specialist and that’s not a statement of fact as she was not helpful for your reservation and plenty of others. Unfortunately this misstatement of facts can be seen on Paddle Express.org shortly after The original founder was underwhelmed by the entire experience training new staff that did not take the roles seriously and professionally. Thank you for your feedback.

Overall is was fine. As I was a litte slow, we got back last and nobody was at the put in. As the put in Point was very steep, slippery and had many Rocks, I slipped and fell into the water. When we got up to the meeting point, the Guide didn’t seem to concerned with my predicament.

Great views along the lake and canyon, definitely lifetime experience. It was quite windy when we went, so it was very challenging. You’d likely paddle for about 2-2.5h, and walk inside the canyon for about 1h, so just keep in mind your limits (I wouldn’t say it’s really for beginners)
Theresa_H, Oct 2025
Lots of paddling but the views were awesome. Walking through Canyon Was a gem. Thumbs up for this!!!
Response from Host, Jan 2026
Yes this was a peak performance for Jasey. Unfortunately her inability to repeat this performance surfaced as you can see in other reviews. In performance analysis she was checked out from this point forward. The tours to follow were heavily handed to Sean and he had to go above and beyond and her efforts never matched with this for the rest of the fall.

We really enjoyed ourselves. Jayce, our guide was friendly and knowledgeable about the area and geology. The lake was calm so the kayaking wasn’t too challenging and the canyon was gorgeous!

Jaycee was fabulous, she was very knowledgeable about the canyon. We were lucky to have her on a private trip.

Be prepared for a geographically enlightening experience with amazing views of Lake Powell and vertical canyon walls from the seat of a kayak and a spectacular immersed stroll through Antelope Slot Canyon. Motorized water craft on the lake can make the return kayak trip a little challenging for kids and inexperienced paddlers due to rolling waves, etc.
Response from Host, Aug 2025
Thank you for sharing your experience! We’re so glad you enjoyed the beauty of Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon — it truly is a special place to see by kayak and on foot. You’re right that boat traffic can sometimes make the paddle back a bit more challenging, especially for younger or less experienced paddlers, and we always do our best to support guests through that part of the journey. We’re happy you had a memorable adventure with us and hope to see you again!

What a nightmare…. Avoid this tour at all costs, email received stated tour started at 8am , arrived at 7:10 but waited till 7:50 to enter the ramp. Talked to another woman with her family who arrived at 8 seemed to be on the same tour with the same company, she approached Sean the tour Guide and said she wasn’t sure where she was meant to go. Sean proceeded to berate the woman about being late and saying everything was in the email but as we were in the same situation didn’t say anything, Sean was arrogant, rude and unhelpful, the woman walked away because he was calling her names and saying she was wrong he was adamant that he was right , shouting and making an awful scene. As two females aged 25 up till now it was Truely the worst customer service I have ever experienced , we tried to get Sean’s attention to say we were not with this woman and we still wanted to do the tour. He proceeded to tell the other woman to leave as he was done and finished with her and not willing to help. He then walked away and said nothing to us at all. We decided to hang around for a few minutes to see if he would come back. He did not , the situation was upsetting and completely ruined our day. We walked away as we did not want to go on the tour with Sean after this display of disgusting behaviour. We tried to get a refund and was denied over and over. Even after saying we were sorry profusely about making a mistake of the orientation time. When I messaged Sean to get a refund after the event , He said we bailed and he was going to help even though we did not exchange one word with Sean. Here’s a tip and save your money, don’t give it to someone like this who treats people like that, go round the corner to the marina and hire your own kayak, the people were lovely and so helpful and they will tell you everything you need to know and it will be so much cheaper and a much much much better experience. I’m horrified by Sean’s behaviour and his refusal of our refund. The whole situation was upsetting and wholly disappointing. Such a shame for such a beautiful place to be ruined by such an ugly person.
Response from Host, Oct 2025
We’re very sorry to hear that your experience with us felt upsetting and did not meet your expectations. We understand how disappointing it is to plan a special day around a tour and feel let down.
For safety and logistical reasons, all guests must attend orientation at the scheduled check-in time stated in the confirmation email. This ensures everyone has the proper instructions and can safely complete the tour. We realize that communication around timing can sometimes be confusing, especially when guests are unfamiliar with the area, and we will continue working on clearer instructions to avoid frustration.
We regret that the interaction you described felt disrespectful — However other local companies can kindly say our customer service staff member Sean was verbally attacked by the woman you described and the story is unfounded in general. Please understand how you felt is never how we want our guests to feel however after we did talk with other witnesses we would like to have a different opinion on what happened. While we were unable to provide a refund outside of policy, we do take your feedback seriously and will use it to improve both communication and guest service moving forward.
Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon are truly special places, and we are sorry that your experience with us did not reflect that beauty. Thank you for sharing your perspective.

These people are horrible. DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM. I purchased a reservation on the morning of April 17th @ 6am for an April 18th booking at 11am. These people re-scheduled my reservation stating "I did not check in" but had all of my information.. Sending me an email and text message after they've already changed the time with Viator, which I informed them did not work with the rest of my birthday reservations. Proceeding to be rude and disrespectful to me and stating they would give me a refund. This did not happen. I took it up with Viator who told me to dispute with the merchant and my bank. I provided text messages and all details just to be told that the merchant "cancelled my appointment due to weather issues and were in their right to do so within the 24-hour window, at their discretion. They know how to trick the Visa dispute process because it is basically an automated system. My bank would not honor a credit because of this and I am out of $200+ on my birthday and just told to deal with it. AGAIN, do not book with them.
Response from Host, Aug 2025
Valencia this is not accurate as you agreed to certain terms and stipulations when you booked that you didn’t uphold and are withholding that information in your statement. You didn’t check in, you also left out how you agreed to adjust your time so we included you on final tour rosters and you miscalculated your departure time. From there you wanted to argue about your new projected arrival time but you had agreed to reserve the gear and the spots just hours earlier only to back out of it and continue to manipulate the situation with a series of misleading reviews that have some truth but more importantly mostly untrue information. We understand that’s your nature and you have to say we are liars but when you finalize your reservation you agreed to terms that you backed out of you because you overbooked your reservations and didn’t check weather like the promotional ticket said you needed to do.
We wish you the best.
EricaCarruth, Jul 2025
All communication from Viator said to meet at 8 a.m. I reviewed it multiple times. For meeting point if you hit “get directions” it will send you to a marina. In the notes however they state “don’t go to the marina, go to the boat launch” (paraphrasing here)
We were running late by about 3 minutes so I texted them at 7:50 asking for clarification because I knew every minute counted.
The texting was very dismissive and abrupt and didn’t give any guidance.
When we got there admittedly 10 minutes late (because finding the ramp took some asking) We were told adamantly that our instructions said to be there at 7:25 and I had missed all the instructions from the safety meeting.
Sean said he wouldn’t talk to me because I was emotional. What he meant was he wouldn’t allow me to talk and he would rudely tell me how I was wrong and my email said 7:25 (it did not) If I tried to respond he would then go off again but state how he wasn’t going to listen to me. Suffice it to say, Sean is not a great communicator.
We walked away and before we got to the top of the boat ramp received a full refund notification from Viator. I’m not sure if he actually looked at the emails from Viator and saw he was wrong or if that was an automatic thing.
Paddle Express, if you read this, Sean needs a vacation or some communication work or both!
If you book this I would call them and find out your actual meeting time because the email from Viator was not correct.
We did not tour antelope through them. We rented our own Kayaks for a $80 total through the Marina and they are lovely. The canyons are totally worth it but Paddle Express…not so much.
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Despite the fact that you broke the terms of the contract we issued you a refund Erica. We also need to highlight how you were told over 7 times there was no argument over lost time and you continued to be combative about information provided and you were the one being rude and pushing buttons. You didn’t check in the day before and you also arrived late. Like we told you we had you marked as an no show for a mandatory meeting required by our Insurance, the National Park, this third party company Viator and the American Canoe Association. Erica we need to apologize to you and know we see it ok for you to attack us to heal yourself from your mistakes. We are not threatened by your misleading statements and grandiose lies as we can go to the product details right now and see exactly where it says Meeting Instructions and it is labeled as a header that is hyperlinked in the follow up email that is sent for those who may have missed information when they booked because it happens. Unfortunately you won’t admit that and you are misleading the audience. The header section, it says mandatory meeting 34 minutes ahead of tour time and it clearly pin drops the launch ramp location. We will say we had 11 other people show up on time and completely ready without any poor excuse like yours. All 11 said the directions were simple, clear, and easy to understand. Sorry for your complete lack of reality you wrote about the email lacking information but it has a hyperlink that says View Details and you also mistakenly account the timeline of communication. We are sad to see you read certain things but missed others as it can show us how you want to have compartmentalization towards your actions and like said at the ramp we feel you have been exposed to the local fire smoke and you are showing signs of cognitive impairment because you are missing easy details and you were combative about it. Unfortunately we are so sad to see this lack of quality human decency from you and the errors involved with your recall and you clearly have a call log on your phone but our log says otherwise. Based on that we question whether or not you can extrapolate digital information and recall it correctly as we can see errors now on several occasions that favor our understanding of what happened. We saw you at the truck at 8:15 almost 1 hour after 7:25 orientation. So when you were the one who made this situation not us. We see you need to manipulate us to mend your mistakes for self healing. We need to clarify that your situation is less than 5% of our customer base but you might see it surface here in reviews often because you all are very similar, super unprepared, and overly entitled. You know how ignorant you sound when your claims are not accurate and 85 % of the participants on your tour arrived at the destination without any complaints? Almost as embarrassing as the claim that information was lacking and not accurate in your reservation details but from the other 11 people on that tour we can say statistically speaking we had 85% of our tour disagreed with you and were able to find the location on time without any stress. Let’s hope you are reasonable with that unshakable truth. You need to know they had zero complaints about the product information but we won’t discuss that in further as we have to continue to address the misleading information you posted. You text at 7:52 while we were conducting the orientation and paddle talk for customers who were on time. Sorry about this question but help us understand something here, so why should we be answering text messages when we have a product to uphold for complaint customers? Why should we allow ourselves to be distracted by customers who are technically a “no show” in that time frame? Sorry to tell you but texting at 7:50 (7:53) doesn’t do anything for you when the group is departing at 8:00. Sorry we don’t give back time by taking it from other customers who arrived ready. We are confident in our boundaries and obviously we don’t feel threatened by these types of reviews like yours and so this will show our audience that you in fact are not telling the truth. Sorry based on the context of the situation you are a pathological liar who has to place blame on a small business. Simply put look at our “meeting instructions” section of the product and you see where it says “mandatory safety briefing 34 minutes before the event time” and in the same sentence it says 8:00am start time. Sorry you showed up 50 minutes after the orientation but you claim to be only 10 minutes late? Do you honestly think for a kayak tour you just show up and boom you get the kayak on water in 5 minutes or less? Clearly you don’t have any experience and raced through our product to finish the booking process but you missed easy simple information and that’s clearly established in the product description where you click a small box that says you have acknowledged the product information. You like many other ignorant consumers (who clicked and dismissed the fine print) and show up with unreasonable and unrealistic expectations because you dismissed us and our policies during the check out process. You agreed that you understood what’s happening however when it came time to perform you chokeholded the whole thing because you dismissed the information we gave you! But in this statement you have no clue and our information was lacking??. How truly pathetic. Erica you’re a grandiose little liar and full of crap just like your storyline as we have over 95% of our customers show up on time and say our directions, information, and instructions are totally fine. They laugh at incompetence such as your long winded story of being victim of your own lack of time management and readiness. I saw you and your husband were very pale and lacking good complexion early in the morning so I believe alcohol was a factor and you were hungover based on how you were told repeatedly that there was no argument and you were told the information you claim to have not received you clicked the small box to get through check out. Sorry our ramp attendant said he had to repeat himself several times and it was like talking to hungover customers who couldn’t comprehend basic information. Sorry not functioning properly is a problem for us to give you equipment and when you are not able to cognitively manage our simple directions we are worried about safety. You were lot later than “3 minutes”. It’s very obvious and very shameful of you to write such bull crap you are not honest and you clicked on the small box that said you acknowledge everything that was presented to you and all the information we provided you understood. However you arrived clueless and late and we don’t want to talk about how you were told 3 times there was no argument but you still did. You are a very good example of a bully and we have no further comment about you lack of accountability. Your long winded rant is just an excuse and a long winded lie. Shame on you you looked like you had more class than this but you can’t help but make poor excuses and false statements.

I hope this will help others before booking & strongly encourage them to look at reviews elsewhere about this company
I am writing to formally express my concern and disappointment regarding the tour scheduled for July 26, 2025 @ 7am which was canceled upon our arrival.
To begin, I received a message from the guide a day prior stating that our tour would be delayed to 7:30am with no additional detailed instructions.
Our group arrived on time, contacted the guide, and waited for further instructions. Upon arrival, we were not informed about a $30 parking fee or a 7:25am arrival time for orientation.
I would like to acknowledge that one of our participants disclosed an inability to swim. We understand that timeliness and safety are important and take full accountability for any disruption this may have caused.
However, despite our effort to still proceed safely and cooperatively without the one person, the tour guide gave several conflicting reasons for the cancellation. This behavior felt inconsistent and unprofessional. For example, we were told we are unable to proceed without one person because it will “mess up the vibe of the group.” What was more troubling were certain behaviors by the guide that suggested bias and possible racial discrimination toward members of our group. While we do not take such accusations lightly, the tone, dismissiveness, and overall treatment we received stood in stark contrast to the welcoming and inclusive environment we had expected from your company.
The guide also accused us of “making a scene” when politely asking questions about the refund.
We flew from another state and drove an additional 4 hours to experience paddle express and are disappointed that things ended the way they did. Thank you for stopping us from making the wrong decision in giving your company our money.
Response from Host, Dec 2025
Thank you for the chance to clarify this matter and we are sorry to see this was disappointing for you. We wish this story would have included more information and also have a complete explanation however we would like to say this story has incomplete information and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by the late arrival. Safety is very important for our product and staying on time is crucial for the product consistency. Thank you
Daniela_S, Jul 2025
Did not start at 7am
No dry bag given
Best for not beginners
Guide very helpful, knowledgeable and overall very nice
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Thank you for clarifying you had a chance for a dry bag but didn’t ask because you were late to arrive for our mandatory orientation. Daniela you also didn’t check in the day before so we had to move you out of the 7am slot to the next available which was 8am. We also want to highlight that at 7:25 orientation you were not there, so more than likely you would have been late to arrive for the 7am and that was one of several reasons we moved you out of that slot because we knew you were going to show up under prepared like you did. Also please clarify your physical shape before you declared what’s best for beginners thank you otherwise it’s very misleading. Have a great day
Cameron_R, Jul 2025
Kayaking is fun if you have Sean as your guide PLZ CANCEL he is extremely unprofessional and aggressive. The also just recently got his guide license revoked and got some reason they gave it back
Response from Host, Jul 2025
Cameron Roots from Detroit Michigan this is hard to read it was not written well, how embarrassing for you. This was hard to read coming from an adult, but your lack of time management skills parallel with your writing ability which is sadly not surprising. This experience was not planned well by your part and you blame us for your inability to execute a bad plan. Let’s take a look at this plan to drive 4.5 hours from Phoenix at 3am to arrive at Lake Powell by 7:30 am for your 8am push off time. We see it as comedy as our response to you being “90”minutes late was not aggressive at all. We simply said 15 minutes late is reasonable and 90 is not. We apologized and said so sorry we can’t do anything about this situation. We have it documented and you should share our conversation with everyone so they know we are telling the truth, not you. Can you please be honest about how your experience went bad? Unfortunately you made choices to make logistical decisions that made you have a low chance of success. You need to be willing to take a honest approach to your game plan, and how it was not something you had any experience in prior to this moment. Please don’t be misleading people your statement is not accurate or true, you sir are not telling the truth about why this experience merits a 1 star. You did not declare a flat tire or anything like that and you just claimed to have been delayed 90 minutes at 5:30 in the morning while your were 200 miles away from the destination. You then attacked our owner in a review that was untrue because we denied the refund request as it was inside of 24 hours and you book this ticket with the full knowledge of this policy. Sean has not lost his guide license that is completely nonsensical and a desperate attempt to devalue one of the best guides at Antelope Point. We know you reached Page and rebooked with a company who otherwise would not have taken your reservation because they have a geofence policy for reasons such as your very own situation where like you said you broke down but really you didn’t plan your time well. We are not worried about the company you booked with, they have a homeless guide who has to tear other people down and we are working with his boss to help the bitter individual get a better life as he’s extremely jealous of Big Sean. He only gets two tours a week because he’s very average and not in the top 20 guides across all the total companies so he’s naturally very jealous. He’s so jealous he had to go to two different company Owners and try to tell a lie about Sean in attempt to devalue his reputation and character, it’s really sad. We have also documented that he is repeating his episodes as a storyteller and fabricator of reality. We see again he fabricated information about Sean to you that is not true. Everyone loves Big Sean as he is the State of Arizona volunteer for the American Canoe Association and this homeless guide has been harassing Sean all season with rumors and gossip. We find it sad but Sean is okay with the envying as it happened to him while he was a Major League Pitcher. You were a no show for a tour and claimed you had vehicle trouble at 5:30 in the morning for an 8am tour. What we see is you left late from Phoenix and had an 4.5 hour drive and lied to us about vehicle problems thinking that would work but you didn’t have anything specific as to your roadside issues, very vague and very much not telling us the truth. No one solves a roadside breakdown at 5:30 in the morning and just gets back on the road. You either got to your rental car late, didn’t charge it, or woke up late. The way you were not able to fool us about your terrible plan and execution caused you to create a false narrative and slander Sean for what ? He did nothing to you and was not aggressive at all, you have zero proof and the burden is on you sir to tell the truth which you have not. We don’t refund that kind of situation (someone lying to us at 5:30am) sorry and your words are a reflection of yourself. Have a great life living like the way you do.

It was a great adventure to paddle trough the Canyon and Lake Powell. We had a lot of fun. Sean is a great guide. He told us a lot of interesting stories while walking through the Canyon and answered every question. We really can recommend this action.

Make sure you bring a backpack with a snack and drink. I’d say to wear hiking sandals because shoes get wet and you hike on sand. But just gorgeous and super fun!

Our guide CJ was amazing! She was very knowledgeable about the canyon and the rock formations. The combination of the paddle and the hike was perfect for me. Looking forward to coming back, great experience!

I feel obligated to share the horrifying experience my family had during a kayak tour with this company. One of their tour guides, SEAN, acted in a way that was not only negligent but also cruel and deeply offensive.
During our return from the tour, my 16-year-old sister fell into the water after being transferred to another boat — something the staff witnessed and said nothing about. She was visibly exhausted, struggling to get back on the kayak in open water, with boats passing by. We were all encouraging her in Portuguese, shouting, “vai, você consegue!” (“you can do it!”). When a boat of strangers approached to help, SEAN told them “they don’t belong here” and that we were just being “too emotional.”
Let me be clear: my sister is a minor, in distress, in the middle of the lake, and this guide mocked our concern and did NOTHING to help.
When my mother asked for help, SEAN replied:
“Your daughter already caused too much trouble.”
“There’s nothing I can do.”
“I’m concerned about the kayak, not her.”
Yes — he literally said that, multiple times:
“I’m concerned about the kayak, not her.”
He even body-shamed my sister, calling her fat in front of us.
We paddled another 20 minutes, emotionally destroyed, while the person whose job is to keep people safe and supported watched and judged us instead.
This was not just bad service — it was a complete failure of human decency, safety standards, and professionalism. If you care about your family’s well-being, especially children, stay far away from this company.
I would give zero stars if I could.

Response from Paddle Express – Safety, Standards, and Setting the Record Straight
We’re genuinely sorry this experience led to distress, and we respect the right of any guest to share their perspective. At Paddle Express, we welcome all guests — of all body types, languages, and backgrounds — and we do not tolerate discrimination or shaming of any kind.
However, the claims being made do not reflect the full reality of what occurred.
🔹 Tour Structure & Safety Protocol
This was a group tour, not a private charter, with 14 total participants. 9 guests completed the full experience and expressed gratitude. Our job is to care for the whole group — and that includes upholding safety, timing, and environmental regulations.
This family completed less than 60% of the tour before choosing to opt out without guide consultation, approaching a private vessel and requesting a tow — a decision made entirely on their own. This placed them outside of our supervision and violated park safety protocol.
🔹 Rescue Effort & Misinformation
Once the guest entered the water, our assistant guide responded quickly. The entire rescue lasted under 10 minutes. However, the family’s behavior during the event and after — including ignoring instructions and crowding the scene — made it more difficult to assist effectively and safely.
This was not an issue of language or discrimination. Our guide remained calm and present, but presence does not equal approval, especially when our directions were being actively disregarded.
🔹 ACA Rescue Protocols
No body-shaming occurred. Our use of the term "obese rescue" is a direct reference to a standard American Canoe Association (ACA) safety protocol — which requires specific adjustments based on a guest’s needs and body type. It is a training term, not a judgment, and was used purely for safety considerations.
🔹 Shared Risk
Unfortunately, the family’s wreckless choices that day created heightened risk not only for their daughter, but for our team and the remaining tour group. This was not a personalized experience — it was a shared adventure, and their actions disregarded that responsibility.
We are saddened that this experience ended in conflict and false accusations, and we’re reviewing this event internally to continue improving our team’s communication and support.
We stand behind our guides and their professionalism that day. After the rescue you had enough energy and time to verbally assault our staff while paddling back and that’s why you were being ignored, you were asked kindly to leave the staff alone and you attacked us. You also ignored our request to leave the kayak in tow alone as you had already damaged it during your first unsecured tow that resulted in sinking and damaging the kayak. This time you attempted to attach to a kayak again in an unsafe position which was going to put everyone at risk yet again but this time injure the person who was doing the human power tow. You were in such a manic state because of your compounding fatigue that you were not able to follow safe boating directions on the entire paddle back which is very unfortunate because the 6 hours it took in total left you without any ability to remain reasonable when you were at hour 3 with us. If you add the hours up on your day you can get an idea that you were not well rested like the other 9 participants who finished the tour in just under 4 hours without any problems. We have witnesses at the ramp who were watching your hostility towards us as you walked away and the other 9 were already at their cars. We feel you were very tired from your 5 hours of driving before you arrived and we know fatigue caused you to become manic and out of our control. Unfortunately several times we gave you instructions and they were not followed.
Sincerely,
The Paddle Express Team

Our Lake Powell kayak and Antelope Canyon tour with Jayce from Paddle Express was unforgettable! As a beginner, I was a little nervous—5 miles of kayaking is no joke—but Jayce was incredible. She stayed close, offered encouragement, and made sure I felt safe and supported the entire time.
The paddle was challenging but beautiful, and the hike through Antelope Canyon was absolutely stunning. Jayce’s calm, knowledgeable guidance made all the difference. She turned what could’ve been an intimidating day into an empowering and memorable adventure.
Highly recommend this tour, if you're a beginner, ask for Jayce! You’ll be in great hands.

The paddle through the river and into the canyon was amazing! The hike through Antelope Canyon was stunning!!! I would however not recommend the tour company. Sean showed up later than all the other tours. He was visibly annoyed and spoke to almost none of his customers. CJ, the woman guide, was great though. She pretty much carried the whole experience until Sean got over himself but he was still pretty intense. He made several rude comments before we even left on the paddle. When asked if there were a place for trash at the boat launch he snidely said, “your car!” Then I asked if we could use a sit on top kayak and he just flat out said no, use this one. He could have easily explained that the sit on tops were not his company kayaks but he was short tempered. He also made my husband paddle in the back saying the heavier person should go in back. I mentioned I was an experienced paddler and he wasn’t he said no. There’s literally a difference of 5 lbs between us so his argument was foolish and he could have asked about the weight difference. Since he didn’t bother I was fighting g my husband’s inexperience the entire day. Sean also felt it necessary to make political comments about the current administration being the reason for the low water levels and people in the region not having water for crops… He definitely did not need to make it political. Furthermore, if you’re making environmental comments and posing as an environmentally conscious person you pick up the fricken trash! You bring bags with you to give to people so they don’t leave tampons and pads in the “bathroom” in the canyon. This was the spot in the canyon where it was protected from other people’s view so your guides where telling women to go back there to pee. No mention of don’t leave anything behind! It was so disgusting back there I came out bummed out. Anyway, we still had a blast going. You can’t ruin beauty like that, even if your guide is rude.
Response from Host, Jul 2025
There are several untruthful statements written in this review including claiming Sean said “current administration being the reason for the low water levels and people in the region not having water for crops”. First off we are so sorry for giving you so much simple information about the current water climate that you can only process it into a incoherent statement “current administration being the reason for the low water levels and people in the region not having water for crops “. This is so incredibly incorrect as Sean says the low water comes from the low snowpack in the upper Colorado River basin, the Western Slope of the Rockies. Sorry you claim he said otherwise because you’re trying to gaslight him and you are wildly incorrect. The Colorado River supply comes from the upper basin Snowpack, sorry politicians don’t manufacture water supply but they do manage it. Sean points out how some water shares rights have been sold by some of their holders and the holders being the agricultural industry that gets 3 million acre feet of the Colorado River annually. Maybe you should limit your heat exposure as a result of your lack of comprehension. Your review is a passive aggressive attempt to devalue Sean because he wouldn’t babysit your teenage son who is obviously becoming too much for you to control. After looking at this review and recalling the time spent with you we can see you’re clearly not a happy personality and you wanted us to babysit your youth son on the tour because he is becoming out of your control. We struggled to keep him from becoming a distraction for other groups while walking the canyon as he was walking up on the heals of the group that was in front of us and was very rude to them because he was not patiently waiting while they were getting pictures taken. He was again a liability for our own group as he was seen writing on the walls with rocks and we had to ask him to stop. Then again as we were kayaking back we certainly had to make an incident report for when he abandoned our group to go cliff jumping on his own without permission from the guides. As far as the political claims you made we want to know is it because you’re a 603 area code democrat who lives in the Deep South and you get triggered when you hear about the current POTUS? We just can’t understand how talking about the current water climate can be seen as “talking politics on a tour”. We are sorry but we are politically neutral although Sean constantly gets the stereotype as a conservative being a retired professional athlete. We never politically charge our tours but the Water in the West and WHO manages it, WHO gets it, WHO uses it is the most commonly discussed topic on our tour because we float in that very same water. Sorry Water in the West is a popular topic for our tours and most everyone loves the wealth of knowledge and experience Sean has to offer but sometimes it’s intimidating to people like yourself who have a lot of ego and can’t fathom how a guide could have that much knowledge and experience. Sorry his overall presence was too much for you to handle because it wasn’t about your son. Clearly you struggled with that and how the tour wasn’t about your only child. Sorry we don’t highlight one individual inside a group tour. Keeping focus on Sean since you attacked him, with Sean you get a guide who has a degree, has pedigree, has experience and significant time on all 4 major reservoirs (Powell, Mead, Mohave, Havasu) on the Colorado River, has a name you can Google, and he won’t tell you. It’s tough for some to understand he’s that accomplished believe it or not. Sorry we never got the damage payment from you as your son was out of control and broke our kayak paddle but we got this hateful review, typical. We are sorry you can’t recall how the tour went with honesty and better clarity. Do you know your son increased our liability by going cliff jumping on his own after we had said we were done and started paddling backs a group ? He broke our rules of “staying together” and went behind our backs making our jobs more stressful, but most importantly he went behind Jaseys back because he knew he couldn’t go behind Sean’s back. That should show everyone everything about your son, he went behind the female guides back not the males... The entire conversation about sit on top vs sit inside kayaks didn’t happen the way you claimed either, as we have both on the trailer. You thought a sit on top that was at the shoreline was yours because you were late. Sorry you weren’t paying attention to when Sean was unloading your kayaks because you were making a coffee run. Sorry you were not there to witness his happy statements to other customers who were on time and ready. You claim Sean was rude but you actually interrupted him, and that’s why you got a short answer. Simply respect him and other staff and we will respect you. It goes both ways as far as professionalism and courtesy. Same goes for your arrival, if you show up late he will not give you extra fluffed attention or if you drop your son off and go get coffee he does not have to babysit him while he’s staging gear. As we see it now you expected Sean to hold a conversation with your son while you went for coffee but he’s not getting paid for babysitting he’s preparing everything for the group and most reasonable people understand that is a time where conversation does not happen because of the demands of the equipment and the environmental terrain it needs to be staged in. This is an outrageous attack on Sean and you’re not being truthful starting with claiming we were late. Paddle Express was on time (you were early and confused on the time zone) and you had a fantastic tour. There was only one other tour guide there in the morning setting up his tour and you lied saying there was all the other companies. That’s sad. You were not on time actually as you were an hour early (got your time zone confused) and went to go get coffee which made you late. Sean is the only guide in the area with the knowledge you received about the current President and the Federal Government wanting to reform the 100 year old Colorado River Compact Agreement that is heavily flawed and based on annual snowpack average that has been below average for too long and needs some reform and it was said as follows: “the current POTUS and the Feds are going to put their foot down on the agreement and force reform as it’s been needed for too long”. Sorry if that statement politicized your tour. We see it as matter of fact, sorry mentioning the words “current POTUS” offended you. Sean studied at UC Irvine, he studied Social Ecology which is how society impacts the environment so yes he was well within his means to discuss the current water crisis and the geopolitical situation on hand. During the conversation your son wanted to challenge him on the information saying “he hasn’t heard anything” and it’s outrageous how you and your son were so entitled yet you’ve never been in the area and have little knowledge in the subject. You want to dump on Sean because you couldn’t have control over him during orientation because you arrived late and he was setting up the gear quietly, peacefully and calmly. You had fantastic service and great kayaks. To be clear he made a statement about the water levels (because everyone ask about it) and the current administration taking action against the current agreement for reform because the agreement is based on 15 MAF of water and we have only been getting 13.6 MAF but maybe numbers like that are too much for you to understand so you deeply misquoted him in recall. That’s why he calls it 15 units so people like you don’t get too flustered when they listen to the critical information that he has to offer. Sorry he understands it’s too complex and complicated therefore confusing so he keeps it very simple. Sorry next time he will read the room better and understand he’s potentially dealing with a bitter person who is also a know it all. Sean studies this information for people to appreciate not butcher in a review. We think you need to be a better listener and not attack our owner Sean for you are bitter you wanted to use his truck as a trash can and he politely said “your car”. Sean was not rude at all he staged all of your gear and was very nice, you just didn’t get any extra time with him before the tour because again you were late and you are not being truthful here. It’s unfortunate that people take out their personal struggles on tours we see it all the time and we saw how you had a very interesting personality (both Sean and JC thought you were challenging to have a conversation with) and many on the tour thought you were extremely exhausting to talk to. Your son also broke our paddle and you never paid for it. We pick up trash everywhere everyday and we are not responsible for the trash in the canyon, that’s not our problem and we hardly get people complaining about it but complainers are complainers like you are here.

Overall, it was a great experience! We loved it. Everything that was promised was delivered. Antelope Canyon is gorgeous for photos.
Tour guide was great and we learned A LOT of geology and history of Page, AZ (which is on the border of Utah and Navajo Nation).
Some things to note:
Your feet WILL be submerged in the water, so the best shoes are sport sandals (like Teva). We wore hiking shoes, which dried pretty quickly, but we would have been more comfortable with sport sandals.
Also, we took the 8am tour, which meets at 7:30. I highly recommend going early bc the water is calm and there are few people on the lake. By 10am, boats start taking over the lake and kayaking became very difficult because the waves were strong. Also, it gets HOT, so any tours after 10am, are too hot, in my opinion.
The meetup is in AZ time, not Navajo time and not Utah time.
If you like the outdoors, I highly recommend this tour!
